Oasis (What's the Story) Morning GlorySe flere produkter fra AmazonOasis were already dubbed the New Beatles before the release of What's The Story--within a month of it going multi-platinum, The Times claimed they were more important than the Fabs; and Liam Gallagher was inviting George Harrison to fight him on Primrose Hill. But then, you'd feel cocky enough to pick on a Beatle if you'd just recorded these songs. Obviously the singles--"Wonderwall", "Don't Look Back In Anger", "Some Might Say"--rock; but it's a shocker rediscovering just how ace the album tracks are. The minor-chord that the chorus of "Hey Now!" pivots on could liquefy a brick; "Champagne Supernova" is the sound of a band riding the nose-cone of a rock & roll Concorde, and as for "She's Electric"--ah, well. Every New Beatles must have their "Maxwell's Silver Hammer". --Caitlin Moran Fragt: Ukendt! |

MGMT Oracular SpectacularSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe term Oracular Spectacular might not mean much, if anything, at all--it's essentially nonsensical--but that doesn't stop it feeling exactly right. Here is a band that treats dizzy cross-eyed awe and a vast bounding sense of sonic weightlessness as their yardstick, jostling to surpass themselves on a track-by-track basis and aiming for the musical equivalent of performing somersaults in tye-dye t-shirts off the rings of Jupiter. MGMT seemingly submit this debut album as an application to acquire and even supersede The Flaming Lips' previously uncontested mantle as spiritual leaders of over-sized Technicolor psychedelic-indie with a soul, weird but not so weird that swelling crowds and even flirtations with the charts aren't a foregone conclusion. "Time to Pretend" opens and sets a tone for the record, producer David Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev) providing a familiar expanse for them to riff across with bull's-eye synths, massive drums and their twist on the template--retro 80s electro and abstract shapes, see Suicide and the Talking Heads for reference. "The Youth" is centred around a hypnotically looping refrain that recalls Pink Floyd and David Bowie, as interpreted by a mellow Secret Machines and the brilliant "Pieces of What" is Ryan Adams spinning through cosmos with classic Neil Young on his headphones. "Future Reflections" meanwhile stand on its hands on a line somewhere in-between XTC and Ween. Thrillingly eclectic, endlessly colourful and never predictable. It's all a bit ridiculous, but indeed spectacularly so. --James Berry Fragt: Ukendt! |

Crosby Stills & Nash 4 Way StreetSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis is one of those albums where you'll want to cherry-pick favourites. Recorded live when the supergroup was at its commercial zenith, it's sloppy in spots where precision is called for; and the hyperbolic counterculture rants sound a bit silly these days (bellows Stills: "Jesus Christ was the first non-violent revolutionary! Ah, dig it, dig it!"). On the other hand, the electric jams are enlivened by some charged guitar skirmishes between Stills and Young. Those who owned the original two-record set will be pleased by the additional Graham Nash song ("King Midas in Reverse") and Young's acoustic "The Loner" / "Cinnamon Girl" / "Down by the River" medley. --Steven Stolder Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Alan Parsons Project Tales Of Mystery And ImaginationSe flere produkter fra AmazonAs unlikely as the idea seems today to use the suspense-filled stories of Edgar Allan Poe as the basis for an album of rock tunes, listeners in the 1970s--who were barraged with such high-flown concepts during the heyday of prog-rock--turned the record into a major hit. The Project actually scored a US Top 40 hit with "(The System of) Doctor Tarr and Professor Feather". The 1987 CD version of "ToMaI" differs somewhat from the original vinyl: Parsons dropped in synthesizer parts to modernize the album, and added an opening recitation by Orson Welles. But the integrity of the original is maintained well enough, and the album remains a classic excuse to dim the lights, pour a glass of sherry (amontillado, natch), and break out the headphones. --Daniel Durchholz Fragt: Ukendt! |

Damned Grave DisorderSe flere produkter fra AmazonAt the beginning of the Damned's Grave Disorder, "I suspend the sitting, grave disorder having broken out", is barked by the admonished voice of then Speaker of The House Of Commons, Bernard Weatherill, before chunky fuzzed-up guitars and power drums jump-start a frantic poppy rant about revolution changing nothing and voting changing even less. Ah, the mirth and the mayhem. And--come to think of it--the melody and the macabre. The Damned are back and--thank hell--all their faculties are intact. Superannuated punks, ceaselessly providing live music for Britain's gnarly pallbearers to pogo to, Grave Disorder is only the Damned's fourth studio album in 16 years and, remarkably, the first to feature bereted loonball Captain Sensible since October 1982. Rat Scabies has gone, to be replaced by ex-English Dogs tubthumper Pinch, Monty Oxy Moron is in on keyboards and Dave Vanian--he of the one-time gothic Dickie Davies hairstyle--remains at the vocal helm. Vanian even gets to sing a manly-voiced love song to missus and bassist Patricia Morrison (formerly of Sisters Of Mercy) which humorously robs Chris Isaak's "Wicked Game" of a few chords. Vanian, actually, is at the top of his game: "Absinthe" , his tribute to the hallucinogenic washing-up liquid of Fin De Siecle Paris is a wonder; "Amen", a grimly insurgent anti-religion rocker with clanging church bell samples is hilarious; and the Andrew Lloyd-Webber treatment on the brilliant "Beauty of the Beast" (Vanian's tribute to the flesh-crawling artfulness of the vintage black and white horror flick) only makes you mad that the Damned never got around to doing a gothic version of Phantom of the Opera in their 1980s heyday. Even so--from the spiky, surfed-up ode to Internet addiction on "Song.com" to the political wryness of "W" (surely pronounced "Dubya")--this is neat, neat, neat all the way and probably the finest album the Damned have ever made. --Kevin Maidment Fragt: Ukendt! |

Son Seals Nothing But the TruthSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe dramatic authority of Son Seals's guitar runs and gloriously gruff singing voice are well-displayed on his seventh recording for Alligator, issued in 1994. But this time around, the gritty musical excitement generated so naturally by the former drummer is undermined by the crisp soul-blues inflections of his accompanists, including two horn players from his band then, and by '90s production touches. After honing his fluent style in two decades as a leading exponent of Chicago blues, the transition to a contemporary blues sound isn't all that smooth. The heart-wrenching tone of his guitar and the plaintive edge to his voice make "I'm Gonna Take It All Back" stand as one of his deepest, ah, most truthful originals ever, canceling any need for Tony Z's thick organ chords and John Randolph's rhythm guitar filigrees. Still, a flawed Son Seals album is better than the best from most modern blues artists. --Frank-John Hadley Fragt: Ukendt! |

William Shatner Has BeenSe flere produkter fra AmazonAh, the ultimate musical joke. William Shatner, well known for his 60s Transformed Man LP (containing unequivocally the worst Beatles cover ever), returns to do what he does second-best, creating Has Been with help from his famous conspirators like Joe Jackson, Henry Rollins, Lemon Jelly, and Ben Folds. But the situation seems to be reversed--is Shatner deliberately playing up to his thespian tendencies for laughs? Part of the appeal of his earlier album was that he was earnest and serious, despite the nonsense poured out. But here, the irony has turned in on itself creating one long paradoxical knot. Here's a 72 year-old actor narrating Pulp's "Common People" a song that defines Britain for anyone currently aged between 25 and 35, complete with a punk-rock middle-eight. It's impossible to discern if he's the joke or the listener is, or both, or neither. Likewise, the poetry by Shatner, backed by Lemon Jelly on "Together"--is this Lemon Jelly's toytown chillout gone too far? Whether it's good, and why depends entirely on the listener--is this the ultimate novelty record or something more credible? As Spinal Tap's Nigel Tufnel once said "It's such a fine line between stupid and clever" --Thom Allott Fragt: Ukendt! |
