Cara Dillon Cara DillonSe flere produkter fra AmazonWith her self-titled debut album, Derry-born Cara Dillon joins the ever-growing band of young singers producing traditional albums that sit equally well with a more mainstream audience. Having shone in, and then left, the hapless Equation, Dillon has struck out with musical partner Sam Lakeman (and this is essentially a duo album in all but name) to stunning effect. The material featured is all traditional in source and performed to a largely acoustic backing, plus Lakeman's rolling piano and the odd inspired moment of electricity. Dillon has a voice that sets her apart from the more traditional singers, at times sounding as if she should be fronting a dreamy guitar band rather than a folk group. She handles the songs expertly, however, combining originality and understanding to perfection. And while to group her with Kate Rusby (another Equation alumni) and Bill Jones may appear an obvious thing to do, it is these three young women who are producing the sort of folk music that will keep the fire burning long into the 21st century. --Phil Udell Fragt: Ukendt! |

Slipknot IowaSe flere produkter fra AmazonAs if answering the challenge of those who dismiss them as a cartoonish joke, Slipknot claim that Iowa is a statement of intent, a real heavy-metal album. As percussionist Shawn Crahan puts it: "We're able to cut into the wound, crawl inside, stitch it up ourselves and fester in the f***ing hurt". And right from the introductory shriek and grind "of (515)", you know they're deadly serious. Iowa is immediately intimidating in its unforgiving heaviness. Produced to cruel perfection by wonderboy Ross Robinson, it takes the best of Slayer as its starting-point and moves on. "People=Shit", "The Heretic Anthem" and "New Abortion" are relentless and wholly brutal. But this is no mere thrash. "Disasterpiece" features a weird, hypnotic riff, while "Left Behind" is like a duet between Alice in Chains' Layne Staley and Slayer's Tom Araya. "Gently" (an old track here re-recorded) builds slowly from industrial atmospherics to a punishing explosion of noise, and the title track (also old and formerly known as "Killers Are Quiet") is a heavy metal "Midnight Rambler", deeply unsettling. Frontman Corey Taylor claims to have performed it naked and bleeding from self-inflicted wounds, and that's not hard to believe. The whole album, though masterfully constructed, is painfully raw and utterly compelling. --Dominic Wills Fragt: Ukendt! |

Coldplay Parachutes [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonMusic doesn't come more touching than Parachutes. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver", Coldplay proved they could shift between elated and crushed in a breath as singer Chris Martin poured out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars that rouse and tug at the heart strings. For 10 tracks on Parachutes, he comes out with these, adding new-found meaning to the most tired and overused rock sentiments--love found, love lost, love unrequited, hurting the ones you love and the struggle that is life--over acoustic guitars and emotionally fraught rock. And for once, all the clichés ring true, thanks to Chris Martin genuinely sounding like a man picking over the bones of his life and soul, coming up with equal parts reasons to be cheerful and seriously depressed. Not that Parachutes is a depressing album; there's too much conviction to the guitars and hope in Martin's words for that. Instead it's a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it. --Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Dante Troubadours [IMPORT]Se flere produkter fra AmazonIf you want to get a good idea of what musical entertainment was like in southern France and Italy in the 13th century, or if you just want to be entertained, this recording of stylish, expert performances will satisfy your desire. The troubadours were the first to work toward perfection of poetic form and vernacular language. Dante, the famous 13th-century Italian poet, admired these articulate poet-musicians and mentioned his debt to their art in several of his works. The Martin Best Ensemble performs 18 of these immediately likable songs of love and chivalry. A few selections are instrumental only; others, performed with solo voice or voice with instruments, are delivered in an expressive style that reminds us that eloquent poetry and well-crafted melodies remain vital and undiminished in their appeal, be they eight or 800 years old. --David Vernier Fragt: Ukendt! |

Stevie Ray Vaughan In StepSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn Step embraces blues and rock without compromising the primal joys of either. This is Stevie Ray Vaughan's best studio album and the first he recorded sober. "Travis Walk" offers a heady rush of flat-picking, "The House is Rockin'" is full-tilt roots- boogie, "Let Me Love You Baby" and "Leave My Girl Alone" are sweet blues epiphanies and the nine-minute instrumental "Riviera Paradise" is a truly soulful mix of blues and jazz. By this stage, just a year before his untimely death, Vaughan had also tamed his bawling voice into a rich instrument. In short, this 1989 session is Vaughan at his artistic peak. It's raw blues-rock perfection. --Ted Drozdowski Fragt: Ukendt! |

Elgar: Enigma VariationsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Vienna Philharmonic under John Eliot Gardiner brings a sense of freshness of discovery to Elgar's noble music. This is partially because this is hardly regular repertoire for the orchestra, and also as Gardiner approaches the scores with a clear individuality of interpretation. Bringing these four works together makes for a satisfying 70 minutes of listening. In the South brings with it moments of almost unbearable delicacy and tenderness which nevertheless do not sound sentimental. A refreshing ardour and dark dramaticism also mark out this reading. Gardiner captures the individual sound worlds of the Introduction and Allegro and Sospiri to perfection. The tender nostalgia of the former and the warmth of the latter lead to an account of the Enigma Variations distinguished by real attention to detail (emphasised by DG's clear and well-balanced recording). Gardiner refuses to milk the music for all it is worth as some interpreters do, preferring to let it speak smoothly and naturally: because of that the performance emerges as all the more emotionally charged. The Vienna players seem to revel in Elgar's frequently beautiful scoring. This Enigma Variations is worthy to sit alongside the finest in the catalogue. Indeed, this disc is a triumph. -- Colin Clarke Fragt: Ukendt! |

Songbirds Wake Up CallSe flere produkter fra AmazonThere are three "songbirds" all together--Lynette from Liverpool, Flick from Devon and Amy from Surrey. Their debut single "The Weatherman (No Wonder I Feel Blue)" garnered a lot of airplay and media attention, which the three young ladies have now capitalised on with this full-length. Wake Up Call continues the threesome's forays into acoustic pop with a country twist. Inspired by veteran singers such as Joni Mitchell, Eva Cassidy and The Dixie Chicks, the songs here are pared down and simple, built from acoustic guitar strums, riffled piano harmonies and softly brushed drums. The real key to the songs though are the girl's voices; more specifically their three-part harmonies. Tracks like "Lazy Sunday Morning" and "Butterflies and Rainbows" are reminiscent of 60s-era ballads, while "Take Me As You Find Me" and "Show Me A Sign" further underline the trio's honeyed vocal talents and penchant for memorable pop hooks. It's not a complicated album, and some may lament the lack of innovation. But those who enjoy well-written country pop songs polished to perfection will find much to like here. --Danny McKenna Fragt: Ukendt! |

Dolly Parton The Grass Is BlueSe flere produkter fra AmazonAlthough better-known for big-haired country hits, Dolly Parton makes a welcome return to her roots for The Grass Is Blue. Bluegrass is the place to be for country acts in the late nineties, as evidenced by The Mountain, Steve Earle's collaboration with The Del McCoury Band--and Parton wears her East Tennessee background proudly on her sleeve for this selection. As well as a couple of original compositions ("Will He Be Waiting For Me" and "The Grass Is Blue"), Dolly tackles the Louvin Brothers classic "Cash On The Barrelhead", the traditional "Silver Dagger", and Johnny Cash's immortal "I Still Miss Someone"--with the traditional bluegrass backing of mandolin, fiddle, guitar and banjo emphasising her strong singing voice to perfection throughout. Concluding with a moving acapella, gospel-style "I Am Ready", this album offers conclusive and enjoyable proof that there is a lot, lot more to Dolly Parton than just the larger-than-life figure who wrote Whitney Houston's biggest hit ("I Will Always Love You"). --Patrick Humphries Fragt: Ukendt! |

Lea DeLaria Play It CoolSe flere produkter fra AmazonStand-up comedian, actress and singer Lea DeLaria is an all-round performer. On Play It Cool she presents a less confrontational image than on 1994's Bulldyke in A China Shop, adopting the role of seductive, witty, confident and heterosexual jazz chanteuse to perfection. Her voice ranges from little girl lost innocence to harder edged tones, both suited to the opening "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd". With stylings from Billie Holiday to Judy Garland, "I've Got You're Number" heads straight for the heart of 1950s big-band balladry, improvised scat vocals proving DeLaria can swing with the best. "Cool" is anything but, the accompaniment understated, that voice dripping with the promise of sex. In "With Every Breath I Take" we get to imagine every late night smoky bar in every old Hollywood film we've ever seen and while pastiche, the characterisation is startlingly evocative. DeLaria sums it up with "All That Jazz", confidently suggesting, following her recent twin roles in the lavishly acclaimed 2000 Broadway revival of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, that this girl just wants to have fun playing bad. When she sings "Life Has Been Good To Me" she has such an upbeat twinkle you suspect she means every word. --Gary S Dalkin Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ac/Dc High Voltage [Australian Import]Se flere produkter fra AmazonEven this early in their career, AC/DC realised that their brutally reductive take on rock & roll amounted to perfection of the form, and they've been reluctant to tamper with a winning formula ever since. High Voltage, their debut album, is remarkable in the context of AC/DC's vast, awesomely single-minded discography for containing what remains AC/DC's lone foray into experimentation in nearly three decades: the delightfully incongruous bagpipe solo in the opening track, "It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock & Roll)". Elsewhere, business as usual: drums like the plods of a lumbering dinosaur, bass like the ominous rumbleof a waking volcano, the 17-year-old Angus Young's guitars as crude and effective as circular saws. Vocalist Bon Scott is on fine, defiantly self-aggrandising form: the title track and "TNT" were two of the most irresistibly, cretinous anthems he would ever write, which is high praise indeed. --Andrew Mueller Fragt: Ukendt! |

Reich: TehillimSe flere produkter fra AmazonSteve Reich is the self-renewer of his one-time minimalist peers, able to revitalise his output just at the point when accusations of resting on laurels start to surface. By 1980, he had seemingly exhausted the possibilities of eight years of harmony-based writing, and aural wallpaper felt worryingly close. Tehilim changed all that: with its grounding in Hebrew cantilation and complex though always dancing rhythmic surround, this was Reich at his absolute best. The four Psalm texts--never so literal as to be settings--form a half-hour vocal "symphony", in impact though emphatically not in conception. The first and longest demonstrates to perfection Reich's method of deriving more from less; textures are spare and streamlined, but capable of great intricacy--the passage from roughly 4'30'' is a wonder of metrical freefall. The closing minutes have a sense of release rare in music of any period. De Leeuw's performance is a marvel of accuracy and energy. Don't worry that the accompanying Three Movements is Reich at his dreariest: Tehilim is one of the most joyous half-hours you'll ever spend. --Richard Whitehouse Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ustad Fateh Ali Khan Magic Of The DaySe flere produkter fra AmazonWhat is music? "Wild sounds civilised into time and tune," replies Ustad Ali Fateh Khan, and his new album eloquently confirms the fact. Each of these four classic ragas, which take us through the day from morn till night, follows a fastidiously shaped arc, and builds its momentum with a wonderfully sure pace. Ustad is a title only conferred on the greatest rag musicians after decades of self-perfection: Fateh Ali Khan's fame has spread far beyond his native Pakistan, but he remains rigorously faithful to its hallowed traditions. His music may have a trance-like effect, but there's nothing other-worldly about it. His tone is sonorously earthy, as is the rich brew of sound on which he rides: the combination of harmonium, ghostly sarangi, and drone-like tanpura is set off by the busily active tabla. The morning rag feels irradiated by the sun; the midnight one suggests a surrounding black stillness. First read the excellent liner notes, then let your mind go. Don't analyse it: the music will work its spell.-- Michael Church Fragt: Ukendt! |

Electric Light Orchestra ELO's Greatest HitsSe flere produkter fra AmazonYou can't make a meal of bubblegum, but it sure can be a delicious distraction. ELO's Greatest Hits is filled with gooey, chewy delights--sonic kitsch like "I Can't Get It Out of My Head" (Lennon on Lithium), "Telephone Line" (Kool & The Gang with violins), and the irresistible "Turn to Stone" (Wagner in spandex)--cultural guideposts, whether you want to admit it or not. ELO combined classical elements with electronic rock and their influence can still be heard in new Turk bands playing with Moogs--for all their Beatles-in-space trappings, the group was also pretty damn catchy. Early ELO was spotty, with flavorful items like "Strange Magic" popping out of the lab nevertheless. By the late '70s, producer-songwriter-singer Jeff Lynne had his electronic pop chamber-group machine oiled to perfection, and this package contains a heavy dose of those longer-lasting-flavor years, with well-chosen dabs of essential chewing pleasure. --Don Harrison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Cast Recording Sweeney Todd [Highlights] [Us Import]Se flere produkter fra AmazonStephen Sondheim's Victorian horror thriller Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is probably his most viscerally powerful score, realized to perfection by the original 1979 cast. Len Cariou plays the murderous title character with both menace and tragedy, while Angela Lansbury provides a grotesquely comic performance as Mrs. Lovett, his lover and partner in crime. At 73 minutes, this highlights CD is extremely generous but still omits over a half-hour from the complete recording. What's missing: the coloratura aria "Green Finch and Linnett Bird," the complete barber-contest sequence, the judge's flagellation number, much of the background of the show's central mystery, and a fair amount of connecting music. Yes, it's a good bargain, and it's convenient to have so much good music on a single CD, but any omission from this monumental score is one too many. If you're serious about Sweeney, spring for the two-disc set. --David Horiuchi Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tomasz Stanko Suspended NightSe flere produkter fra AmazonSuspended Night sees the Polish trumpet maestro Tomasz Stanko raising his art to a further plateau of lyric perfection in European jazz. Featuring the same trio of young, excellently attuned Poles who distinguished themselves on the 2002 Soul of Things--Marcin Masilewski (piano), Slawomir Kurkiewicz (bass) and Michal Miskiewicx (drums)-- Suspended Night is an album of burnished beauty, of mostly mellow, yet utterly compelling melody, texture and mood. The spacious, flowing reveries of the opening "Song for Sarah", where Masilewski's lambent touch and dynamic sensitivity are as remarkable as the leader's soulful breadth and depth of tone and phrase, set the tone for the 10 diversely conceived "Suspended Variations" that follow. The variations constitute the bulk of this superbly recorded 70-minute work and some of them, such as variations 2, 5 and 8, project a fair amount of polyrhythmic heat. Overall, however, the music is largely remarkable for its fruitful, complementary tempering of those flaring extremes of sound and rhythmic accent that have often characterised Stanko. The result is perhaps the most affecting example to date of the naked yet literate art of this utterly distinctive musician: certainly, the combination of Slavic soulfulness, melodic and rhythmic intelligence and--above all--poetic courage makes Suspended Night a release to treasure. --Michael Tucker Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Drifters The Very Best of the DriftersSe flere produkter fra AmazonA by-the-numbers, chronological collection that hits all the commercial highlights of the Drifters' Golden Era (1959-64)--after the frequently dazzling early records with Clyde McPhatter, but featuring the consummate vocal stylings of Ben E. King, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore, and more on 16 memorable hits. Among the pinnacles: "There Goes My Baby", the record whose unsettling, soaring strings launched the soul era; the romantic perfection of "Save the Last Dance for Me", "This Magic Moment" and the catchy, Latin-bouncing "Sweets for My Sweet"; and the eternally evocative cityscapes of "Up on the Roof", "Under the Boardwalk" and the stark, gritty "On Broadway". Sleepers include the heartrending Bacharach ballad "Please Stay", "I Count the Tears" (ripped off later on the Grass Roots hit "Let's Live for Today") and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling", on which strings foreshadow the folk-rock movement. This is an ideal starter kit on these seminal uptown soul pioneers; those seeking further revelations (and there are plenty of them) are referred to Rockin' & Driftin': The Drifters Box. -- Ken Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |

James James: The Best OfSe flere produkter fra AmazonRiding on the powerful wave of Manchester's early 1990's musical renaissance, James' intellectual and improvised approach complemented a dance heavy scene and catapulted the seven-piece in to the limelight. "Come Home" and "Sit Down"--James' most lucrative singles--commence this 18 song Best Of collection. Elsewhere, the equally commercial "She's A Star" from 1997 and 1998's satirical "Destiny Calling" prove that James have consistently carved out new territory for themselves and their listeners. Gradually drawing away from the brittle bones of their 1980s incarnation as a provocative but marginalised indie four-piece--as evinced on 1995's "Hymn From A Village"--1991 saw a strengthened James refining their musical designs to the point of subtle perfection on the epic "Sound". Writers of pop songs, devotees of producer Brian Eno's spirit of adventure--and occasionally unwitting victims of singer and lyricist's Tim Booth's sanctimonious and heavy-handed manner--James are a true enigma. Their Best Of is an island of musical intrigue and possibility. --James Littlewood Fragt: Ukendt! |

Vandals Hitler Bad Vandals GoodSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhile it is a universal truism that as soon as you inject an element of humour into rock and roll it's immediately rendered disposable, unlistenable and, ultimately, unfunny, Californian hardcore stalwarts the Vandals would beg to differ. Hitler Bad, Vandals Good is nothing short of prime, hardcore mosh fodder with a side order of hilarity. "My Girlfriend's Dead" is pure genius--a jolly, Beatlesque romp which shamelessly rhymes "leukemia" with "bulimia". "I've Got An Ape Drape" a deliciously cruel indictment of hockey-haired, trailer-bound, style criminals with achy-breaky, neck-warming mullets, and the band's singular cover of "So Long, Farewell" (from The Sound Of Music) has to be heard to be believed. Of course they don't always play it for laughs, "The People That Are Going To Hell" is a masterful, Redd Kross-styled slice of pounding punk-pop perfection, but the Vandals remain the single most reliable passport to Sniggersville currently operating on Planet Rock. -- Ian Fortnam Fragt: Ukendt! |

John Coltrane StandardsSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn Standards, a compilation of John Coltrane's Impulse recordings from the early 1960s, we see how he forged a genuinely original relationship with the standard repertoire, whether he was simply embellishing a familiar melody with his luminous tone or transforming the rhythmic and harmonic underpinnings of a song. On the lyrical side, his tenor saxophone exposition of "What's New" achieves a barely adorned perfection, while there's similar grace in his pairing with another consummate balladeer, singer Johnny Hartman, on "Lush Life" and "Autumn Serenade". A throbbing bass ostinato and a potent brass ensemble join with the serpentine coil of Coltrane's soprano to turn the traditional ballad "Greensleeves" into a hypnotic brew, while "Inch Worm", with Coltrane also on soprano, has a laughing humour all its own. It's on tenor, though, that Coltrane unleashes his greatest forces. "I Want to Talk About You", recorded live at Birdland, ends with a titanic cadenza (almost half the length of the performance) that's unrivalled in jazz recordings, testimony to Coltrane's invention as well as his sheer technical brilliance. "Out of This World" is recast with modal harmonies and polyrhythms into an extended performance of soaring power and searing intensity. At his best here, Coltrane wasn't just transforming his material; he was extending the expressive possibilities of music. --Stuart Broomer Fragt: Ukendt! |
