Coldplay A Rush of Blood to the Head [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonOn Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head, the melodic excellence of Parachutes remains, as does the delicate soulfulness of Chris Martin's voice. But now different styles are approached, as the band develop even further beyond their debut album (and the numerous Radiohead comparisons that dogged them at first). "God Put a Smile upon Your Face", for instance, has a thumping voodoo quality, while the hypnotic "A Whisper" has a wild vocal arrangement recalling Jefferson Airplane. Beyond this, each of the 11 tracks--from the literate power ballad "In My Place" to the 60s-style mantra "Daylight"--are given room to breathe, gradually reaching an ecstatic crescendo where Martin and that huge Coldplay piano ride over a pulsing rhythm and orchestrations that are powerful but never overblown. "Give me real, don't give me fake" says Martin in the opening "Politik" and it's an appropriately uncompromising demand, for A Rush of Blood... is without doubt the most heartfelt and emotionally liberated album to top the charts in ages. --Dominic Wills Fragt: Ukendt! |

Patti Smith Horses [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonOn her 1975 debut, Smith was full of piss and vinegar, seriously interested in bringing together high art and low three-chord rock & roll. As a result, her free-form poetry meshes with covers of "Gloria" and "Land of a Thousand Dances", and the album centres on two long, highfalutin' pieces, including the three-part suite (warning! warning! art!) "Land". (The CD version appends a messy live take on The Who's "My Generation".) Led by Richard Sohl's piano, the arrangements don't exactly rock, and some of Smith's song-writing gets buried in its stylistic affectations (there's a great song under "Redondo Beach"'s fake reggae). But the point of Horses was Smith's persona of volume, cunning and exile, and it comes through distinctly. --Douglas Wolk Fragt: Ukendt! |

Humperdinck: HÃ?nsel und GretelSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis recording is now available in EMI's Great Recordings of the Century series, and does indeed qualify for that description--despite being in mono, and having a rather flat acoustic. Fundamentally the performance comes alive because of the fantastic conducting (Karajan, so often accused of being cold and clinical, only recorded the overture once, having told the players it was merely a rehearsal-- and in consequence it sparkles with spontaneity). The tempi move with ease, and the details of the characterful orchestration are always clear. The cast too is excellent. Elisabeth GrÃ?mmer portrays HÃ?nsel as a resolute little boy without being too mawkish about it, and Else SchÃ?rhoff makes the Witch into a showpiece of different vocal colours--sweet insinuation, jubilation, evil cackling, and even just sheer, daft joy. This is not the Freudian psychodrama that it might be, but has moments of disturbing ambiguity none the less: the cuckoo scene, for example, is full of foreboding. And there are moments of pure magic too--after having heard "fake" children all the way through, when the real children's choirs begin singing, the effect is sublime. -- Warwick Thompson Fragt: Ukendt! |

Beenie Man Art and LifeSe flere produkter fra AmazonWarning: Art and Life is Beenie Man's "fusion" album--an attempt to stretch the boundaries of reggae. Those who like their dancehall straight up may find themselves unimpressed. The art that Beenie's created sounds slightly artificial. It's extremely disconcerting to hear "de girls dem sugar" spouting off about "fake-a$$ n** s", as he does on the "Hate Me Now"-esque "Haters and Fools". Thematically, the album is all over the place with an emphasis on mainstream hip hop and R&B. Apparently Beenie called in his favours for this one. Art features a whole heap of high-profile guest stars, who don't really add anything spectacular to the mix. Two better-deserving Jamaican vocalists could easily have replaced R&B princesses Mya and Kelis. Wyclef's "eclectic" persona is abrasive and Redman's contribution to "Love Me Now" actually manages to come off as offensive. On the plus side, Beenie and the Cherry Poppin' Daddies' Steve Perry score with "Ola", a groovy little reversal of Sugar Ray's and Supercat's "Fly". -- Rebecca Levine Fragt: Ukendt! |

John Zorn Film Works, Vol. 4: S&MSe flere produkter fra AmazonLovers of 1970s go-go music sleaze hoping to find nirvana in Zorn's soundtracks to two modern S/M films (and three non-S/M movies) should tighten the belts on their raincoats and head elsewhere. These soundtracks are studies in extremes, avoiding any particular melodic stereotype. The music to The Elegant Spanking can be compared with American composer Morton Feldman's brooding minimalist work, while the score to A Lot of Fun for the Evil One is a noisy collage built entirely from digital samples like the voice of mystic Aleister Crowley and malfunctioning machine-shop drills. The remaining three tracks vacillate among blistering noise, the airy breath of a solo piano, and the barren landscape of echoing guitar, conspiring to maintain the disc's uncompromising passion. --Michael Woodring Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bach: Goldberg VariationsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe American pianist Murray Perahia's new Sony recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations has such presence and immediacy that you will find yourself moved to listen to the entire 75-minute work without a break. Indeed, it would have been exceedingly rude not to, such is the power of this CD. The variations flow one to the other with hardly a break and no noticeable editing. The stream of ideas emanating from the initial haunting aria gathers momentum as the work progresses. Variation Five is the first thrilling lick. Variation Eight is a knuckle-knackering jig. Perahia hits the keys with such crispness that the bass strings twang like harpsichord notes. Variation 11 is the first fugue. Is it dry and dusty? No! It belts along like an arrogant student. Variation 14 is a test of hand crossing--you can hear the click of fingernails on keys. Variation 15 is minor for the first time, 16 is regal, 17 features bubbling thirds. Variation 21 temporarily halts the composer's exuberance with a sudden sombre lurch towards Luther like a guilty sinner repenting. The whole disc is a wonder from beginning to end and undoubtedly one of the finest tributes released in Bach Year 2000. -- Rick Jones Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tupac Shakur R U Still Down [Australian Import]Se flere produkter fra Amazon26 cuts of "gangsta rap" that only increase in doom when you realize the guy talking it didn't live to laugh about it. Perhaps he now knows the answer to his question, "I Wonder If Heaven Got a Ghetto," which shows up here twice. Shakur, like most hard rappers, liked to sound tough, kicking it with song titles unprintable in a family newspaper. But, underneath the braggadocio, there was fear. "Only Fear of Death," "Nothing to Lose," and "I'm Losin' It" tell a far different story than "Fake Ass Bitches." His artistry could never, however, catch up to the sad fate of his life. --Rob O'Connor Fragt: Ukendt! |

Duran Duran Pop TrashSe flere produkter fra AmazonFollowing the criminal disregard that British record labels showed their previous album Medazzaland you could have been forgiven for thinking that Duran Duran were over and done with, reduced to touring a greatest hits package to nostalgia fans who survived the fashion crimes of the 1980s. Yet the start of the new millennium saw them bouncing back with another studio album, and with it a few hints towards a new direction. There are some tracks that are undeniably Duran Duran--the sublime wistful balladry of "Pop Trash Movie" and the rousing choruses of "Mars Meets Venus", but these are countered with some bizarre shifts in style--to the shades of Elliott Smith on "Starting To Remember" and an attempt at Smashing Pumpkins light on "Last Day On Earth". It all makes for a very mixed but highly likeable bag, with the notable exception of "Hallucinating Elvis", complete with appalling fake American accents, but this is the exception to the rule. Pop Trash is a return to form with some unexpected extras. --Helen Marquis Fragt: Ukendt! |

Banco De Gaia IgizehSe flere produkter fra AmazonToby Marks is something of a veteran when it comes to making ambient, world music-inspired electronica. This is his fifth album and arguably his most diverse to date. Although well known for his ever-morphing soundscapes, for Igizeh he seems to have stretched his canvass even wider to allow for his myriad influences. The opener "Seti I" begins with a whispering, windswept intro before building into a much more animated cut that's all breakbeat, uplifting chants and dramatic atmosphere. "Obsydian" meanwhile is a more restrained but fuller vocal hit that comes with a euphoric techno-inspired soundtrack. Then there's "Glove Puppet", another vocal track but this time underpinned by some rolling hip-hop beats and melancholy strings. "Gizeh" ties some ambient world sounds together with dub techniques and feisty beat-work and "Fake It Til You Make It" is an ultra-chilled slice of ambience that turns into a devastating piece of funk. Once again, Banco has thrown everything from funk to folk, from rock to roots and from esoteric noise to electronic science into his cauldron and come up with an evocative sound that he can truly call his own. -- Paul Sullivan Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack ChicagoSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe movie version of Kander and Ebb's Chicago was long in the making but its well worth the wait. Director Rob Marshall's main change was to turn the classic musical numbers into fantasy sequences, but of course this isn't obvious on CD. Most importantly, the arrangements are bursting with life while being true to the show's spirit, and the casting is simply inspired. Catherine Zeta Jones actually started her career on the British boards (she was in The Pajama Game and 42nd Street) so her turn as slinky Velma Kelly isn't that surprising; Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart is more of a leftfield choice but she shows she can handle the singing demands with pizzazz. The real revelation may well be rapper Queen Latifah, who belts out "When You're Good to Mama" with a marvelous affinity for the material. Okay, so the R&B reprise of "Cell Block Tango/He Had It Coming" by Queen Latifah, Macy Gray, and Lil' Kim fails to convince, while Anastacia's "Love is a Crime" is just bland (rest easy, purists, it's over the end credits). On the other hand, the CD provides two bonuses: "Class," which was cut from the movie, and "I Move On," a great duet written by Kander and Ebb for the final cut. It's really easy to mess up film adaptations of Broadway shows: happily, Chicago proves it can be done right. --Elisabeth Vincentelli Fragt: Ukendt! |

Brad Paisley Who Needs PicturesSe flere produkter fra AmazonYou'd never have guessed that this country hunk would turn out to have a brain and a heart hiding under his Western gear, but Brad Paisley's Who Needs Pictures is among the more encouraging albums to come out of Nashville in some time. Rather than running from country's traditions, Paisley embraces them, going so far as to include the gospel standard "In the Garden" alongside original songs that tackle more contemporary subjects such as single motherhood ("He Didn't Have to Be") or church services that interfere with a Sunday out on the lake ("Long Sermon"). Just as promising, the guitars (Paisley's own picks) and fiddles here have been recorded in all their biting, twangy glory. There are problems--a few arrangements are predictably busy and the gimmicky fake-out ending of "Me Neither" is clever precisely once--but overall, Paisley's debut seems like a sign of something good about to develop. --David Cantwell Fragt: Ukendt! |

Dashboard Confessional The Places You Have Come To Fear The MostSe flere produkter fra AmazonOf all the down-trodden intellectuals turning skate-punk into emo, Dashboard Confessional's Christopher Carrabbas is by far the most bruised. With just an acoustic guitar and some choice words, the Ben Folds sound-alike turns the concept of the love song on its head with The Places You Have Come to Fear the Most's torrent of poetic abuse aimed at girls who've taken advantage of his good nature. From "Saints and Sailors"' antagonistic "this apartment is starving for an argument, anything at all to break the silence" and the defeated "I claimed you as my only hope and watched the floor as you retreated" of "The Good Fight", to "Screaming Infidelities"' punch line "So kiss me hard because this will be the last time I let you", he's bitter and unapologetic about it. Yet while his love-life may be a tragic mess, the pure cathartic joy he derives from putting the ladies in question back in their place--evident from the venom with which he belts out his acoustic attacks--is unmistakable, infectious and fantastically liberating. So much so, that wallowing in your own self-pity has never sounded like so much fun. --Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ray Charles Ray Sings, Basie SwingsSe flere produkter fra AmazonTo fake or not to fake: That is the question consumers must answer for themselves in assessing this feat of aural Photoshopping: an "imaginary concert" created by combining recently discovered soundboard tapes of Ray Charles's vocals from a mid-'70s European show and newly recorded backing by the Count Basie Orchestra--the "ghost band," still on the road 22 years after Count's passing. Charles is in exceptional voice, singing the heck out of standards like "How Long Has This Been Going On?," Genius classics like "Busted," and pop covers like Melanie's "Look What They've Done to My Song." His performance is a thrilling corrective to forgettable posthumous albums like Genius Loves Company, designed to cash in on the new audience created for him by the movie Ray. But as competently as the Basie band fill in the blanks under the direction of Bill Hughes, with Joey DeFrancesco guesting on organ, most of the new arrangements are rather pallid, and the ensemble lacks the personality of both the Basie orchestra and Charles's best groups. And as attractive as Ray Sings, Basie Swings may be for the casual listener, the gimmickry will appall serious fans, particularly since neither Charles nor Basie--who never collaborated in life--was around to lend his approval. Simply Red Home: Limited Edition/+DVDSe flere produkter fra AmazonHome is the first album from Simply Red for more than three years. Their last (1999's Love and the Russian Winter) was both underwhelming and underperforming--the result of the band's increasingly unfashionable status and the flame that once made Mick Hucknall a great songwriter starting to burn out. Many artists in this position attempt some kind of back-to-basics approach to remind everyone why they sold so many records in the first place. On the surface, this looks like what Hucknall has attempted, particularly with opener "Home". But scratch the surface and you'll find bold, upbeat and funky songs, full of joyous brass and strings. Both "Fake" and "Sunrise" (complete with a forgivable Hall and Oates sample) are wonderfully reminiscent of early Hucknall but infused with a new-found confidence. Home is Simply Red in a nutshell--great, soulful songs, funky guitars and Hucknall's remarkable voice, the latter something that most people forget when criticising the band for their "coffee table" appeal. The main problem is that there aren't enough of these songs. The album is bolstered significantly by a number of covers (most notably the inspired Dylan classic, "Positively 4th Street"). They're great, but ultimately B-side fodder, taking up valuable room on the album after a mammoth absence--what has Hucknall been doing for the last three years? Well, setting up his own record label to release this, for one thing. Hucknall should have capitalised on this opportunity more because despite the quality on offer here, it simply isn't enough. --Ben Johncock Fragt: Ukendt! |

Turbonegro Apocalypse DudesSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's hard to take Apocalypse Dudes seriously, so it's best not to. Turbonegro's greatest album is a mix of all the best excesses of 70s and 80s hard rock and metal, with influences taking in Motley Crue, Judas Priest and Alice Cooper, all delivered with a punk-rock attitude. The result out-Spinal-Taps Spinal Tap, from the fake prog intro to "The Age of Pamparius" (which takes a swipe at Rush before launching into pomp-rock excess) to the call-to-arms anthem "Rock Against Ass". And while song titles such as "Don't Say Motherfucker, Motherfucker", "Rendezvous with Anus" and "Good Head" virtually guarantee little radio airplay, they have enough catchy hooks to appeal to fans of fellow Scandinavian rockers (and new label-mates) the Hives, with lowbrow, so-dumb-they're-clever lyrics that should win over fans of the Farrelly Brothers. --Robert Burrow Fragt: Ukendt! |

Trisha Yearwood The Songs Remembers WhenSe flere produkter fra AmazonTrisha Yearwood is often compared to Linda Ronstadt, and it's easy to understand why when listening to her wide-open country-rock vocal on "Better Your Heart Than Mine," which was co-authored by Andrew Gold, a former member of Ronstadt's band. Yearwood grabs hold of the rocking beat and belts out the melody as if her voice had the buzzing edge and rhythmic clout of an electric guitar. The 29-year-old singer is capable of a lot more, however, and she proves as much on her breakthrough third album. The key number is "I Don't Fall in Love So Easy." Yearwood's ability to stretch a note with a bluesy fall in pitch as if torn between defensiveness and desire is a rare skill. Willie Nelson not only wrote the Mexican-flavored "One in a Row," but he also plays the acoustic guitar solo on it and sings harmony behind her on Kimmie Rhodes' "Hard Promises To Keep." The album falls short of true greatness due to a few questionable song choices but it gives more than a few hints that Yearwood could well be the female country singer who best combines commercial appeal and artistic merit in the '90s. --Geoffrey Himes Fragt: Ukendt! |
