Grand Popo Football Club Shampoo Victims

Grand Popo Football Club Shampoo Victims

It doesn't take long to realise that Shampoo Victims by Grand Popo FC is a slightly bonkers proposition. The group--who are named after an imaginary football club in a real African town one of the producers spent some time in--have adorned the cover of their debut with some wacky cartoon artwork and added an obscure title that doesn't exactly create an image of seriousness or maturity. And yes, the LP is as "zany" inside as it looks on the outside. The duo, Ariel Wizman and Nicolas Errera, are big fans of monkeying about in the studio and concocting tunes they hope will get everyone a-grinning and a-bopping. The musical scope is broad, but the vocodered voices, springy basslines and quirky electronica elements are consistent throughout and are what give the LP an amusing and sometimes edgy feel. The effort of maintaining such a consistent level of "wackiness" can feel a little unbearable at times but for the most part, this is effortless good fun. -- Paul Sullivan

Jori Hulkkonen Classic and Rare - La Collection Chapter 3

Jori Hulkkonen Classic and Rare - La Collection Chapter 3

Having already released a number of "best of" compilations, Classic and Rare translates as those records that F Comm think you may have missed out on, plus a bunch of less obvious moments from their extensive back catalogue. It's all good stuff. CD1, mixed by Jori Hulkkonen, includes the angelic narcolepsy of Avril's "Velvet Blues", the David Sylvian-enhanced "Ready Made FC" and the chunky Inner City-like "My Precious Thing" from Lllorca, here in its old-school threads. CD2, finds label boss Laurent Garnier rattling through the vaults, blending the unorthodox flavours of heavy tribal percussion, steely electro and his own heads-down strain of techno. Always understated but never dull, Garnier drops some real stunners including "Electronic" from Juantrip, the fragile beauty of Lu & Jill Hoo's "Shelter" and the Jeff Mills re-rub of his own, masterly "Crispy Bacon". -- Paul Tierney

James Lavelle Global Underground 23: James Lavelle In Barcelona

James Lavelle Global Underground 23: James Lavelle In Barcelona

Beats aficionado and all-round scenester, James Lavelle, has always had a way with a beat. Here, we get to see what the Mo Wax head honcho can turn up with a set of turntables and a wide choice of tunes for Global Underground 23 in Barcelona. On CD 1 he begins, appropriately enough, with DJ Shadow's brooding "Mongrel Meets It's Maker" before heading steadily towards nu skool breaks territory via cuts like Leftield's "Dusted" (featuring Roots Manuva), Thomas Bangalter's "Night Beats", building an infectious set that features Layo and Bushwacka's "Let The Good Times Roll", Sasha's "Fundamental", Evil9's "Crooked" and the excellent Unkle remix of Ian Brown's 'Fear'. CD 2 initially starts with a loose, four-four sound courtesy of Pitch Black's "Underground Sound" but soon brings back the pin-sharp syncopation with artists like Meat Katie, Rennie Pilgrem and Soul Of Man. Lavelle finally gets his tech house tendencies out halfway through this second mix, stringing together bubbling tracks from Peace Division, Duncan Gray, Lee Burridge, FC Kahuna and Halo before coming to a simmer with "There Goes The Fear" by Doves. Competent enough, but hardly the cutting edge stuff you might expect from a man perpetually hyped as a luminary. -- Paul Sullivan

For those unwilling to travel across the world in order to hear the finest sets in the finest clubs, as played by the finest DJs, the Global Underground series proves a godsend. Less concerned with forcing as many chart hits into the equation as most of the glut of commercial mix CDs, Global Underground pushes the DJ to the fore. John Digweed's Hong Kong is a perfect example of the superstar DJ effect paying off--his sleek, polished take on tech-trance isn't dictated by commercial concerns, market forces or chart position, but simply concentrates on moulding the dancefloor into a pulsing, hypnotic ambience. An eight-minute reading of the Salt City Orchestra remix of Underworld's "Cups" recedes into the sparse, dark house of Madder Rose's "Overflow (FC Kahuna remix)" without even showing the join, and that's very much Digweed's style. Confident, seamless, accomplished-- Hong Kong is so good it defies genre pigeonholing. -- Louis Pattison

He's big down under, Dave Seaman, so it's only right he should deliver a mix for Global Underground that reflects his love affair with Aussie club culture. Maybe they like the man for his lack of pretension, his adventurous spirit, or just his far-ranging scope of styles; a repertoire that takes in everything from ethnic breakbeats to eerie, fractured house. Whatever, CD1 highlights this subtle eclecticism, blending weird tribal dub and beardy electronica into a steep incline of pounding technoid shapes. CD2 hits the right note between the downbeat and the esoteric, weaving earnest but rich progressive house into the equation, each track stripped back to bare threads of melody and hypnotic military rhythm. Some are a tad listless, like the Chicken Lips mix of Infusion's "Star Water", but most, like FC Kahuna's old school "Glitterball", say all you need to know about Seaman's roving eye for the party.-- Paul Tierney
