Lateef and the Chief Present Maroons Ambush [Us Import]Se flere produkter fra AmazonMaroons borrow from two of Quannum's best-known groups, pairing Blackalicious producer Chief Xcel with Latyrx's chatterbox Lateef. Though the two have worked together many times before, the focused collaboration on this nine-song effort helps to reinforce each artist's strength. Compared to the more mellow beats that Xcel often concocts for Blackalicious, the production on Ambush is more energetic, even aggressive at times. You hear that most explosively on the funk bomb "Lester Hayes", but even the slick, disco-flavored "Don't Stop" benefits from this more vigorous approach. Likewise, Lateef's mercurial sing-song flow gets a thorough workout, swinging a more seductive lilt on "Beautiful You" while hitting a brisk pace for "Best of Me" (which also features Xcel's Blackalicious partner Gift of Gab). Though clocking in at less than 40 minutes, this offering is still more than a sufficient tease of what new experiments Quannum might produce down the road. --Oliver Wang Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tyde TwiceSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's never been quite clear whether Los Angeles based indie-pop quartet the Tyde are a side-project of alt.country act Beachwood Sparks or vice-versa--the two bands share three members in the shape of singer/guitarist Brent Rademaker, drummer Chris Gunst and guitarist Dave Scher--but Twice quietly insists that you take it very seriously indeed. A sweet, mercurial foray into lip-quivering American indie-rock infused with the blissful aroma of Creation-style schmindie ambience and the woody scent of paisley-clad cosmic country, this album is a peculiarly transatlantic proposition: are the Tyde more Felt than Gram Parsons? More Orange Juice than Dylan? You'll change your mind every song. Best to ignore the reference points, then, and look straight to Rademaker's heartfelt, sensitive quaver. "Cut me down / Run me out of town / I'll find another place to play" he sings on "A Loner", as the sort of neat, heartache-inducing jangle that Peter Buck perfected on REM's Automatic for the People chimes out around him. It's not all totally winsome, mind: the chugging "Blood Brothers" proves Rademaker hides a sharp sense of humour somewhere in his laconic drawl and the throwaway "Shortbread City" is a rowdy beer-sinker that wears its cheesy key-change with pride. -- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Beethoven - Violin Concerto. Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante, K364Se flere produkter fra AmazonRecorded live at London's Royal Albert Hall in 1963, this disc brings together three superb artists for two extraordinary performances. In Mozart's Sinfonia Concertante, with Menuhin conducting, Igor Oistrakh on violin sounds bright and radiant, his father David, on viola, dark and warm; with great charm, brilliance and obvious mutual enjoyment, they play to and off each other in questioning, diverging phrases that come together in triumphant, ecstatic affirmation. Weaving a tapestry of transparent lines, they bring out Mozart's mercurial moods from devil-may-care exuberance and soaring lyricism to despairing lamentation. With David Oistrakh conducting, Menuhin plays the Beethoven concerto. Though he no longer had complete mastery of fingers and bow, the buoyancy of his rhythm, the incandescent intensity of his tone and his deeply personal expressiveness were undiminished. The second movement is simply heavenly: very slow, calm, serene, inward, with a floating, disembodied air, absolutely perfect in tone, tempo, mood, it finally fades into the distance like a dream. His 1947 recording with the Luzern Festival Orchestra under Wilhelm FurtwÃ?ngler (Testament STB 1109) offers a fascinating comparison. Here, his technique is impeccable, smooth, effortless and, except for the truly incomparable slow movement of 1963, his playing is no less beautiful in tone and moving in expression. As was customary at the time but rare today, FurtwÃ?ngler constantly changes tempo along with character and dynamics; however, he was famous for his ability to make such liberties sound entirely natural and organic. -- Edith Eisler Fragt: Ukendt! |

Kasse Mady Diabate Kassi KasseSe flere produkter fra AmazonThough this Malian griot has a career stretching back to the early 70s, he's not nearly as well known as his musical pedigree would lead you to expect. Kassi Kasse is his first solo work since the patchy but intriguing brace of albums he recorded with producer Ibrahim Sylla in Paris in 1989 and 1990. But you're more likely to know his voice from guest appearances on the Songhai 2 album or Taj Mahal's Kulanjan. The musician linking those two albums with this latest effort is mercurial kora maestro Toumani Diabate, who furnishes just one track with his rippling accompaniment. The arrangements are almost exclusively traditional (n'goni, balafon, dundún, djembe etc), but the material traces both the musical heritage of his home village of Kela (where it was recorded in a disused infirmary) and Kasse Mady's own career. That's why a couple of rather charming Cuban flavoured numbers from his days in the '70's and '80's with the orchestra Las Maravillas du Mali are included. There are also two strange songs featuring the little-heard "simbi" (an ancient seven stringed hunter's harp), which add much needed variety to what might otherwise have been little more than a glorified field recording. Kasse Mady has a great voice and he's joined on four songs by his brother Lafia, who will be familiar to owners of Djelimady Tounkara's solo album Sigui. And though it lacks the polish of that record, it does have that loose organic feel which only comes from musicians interacting live in the studio. -- Jon Lusk Fragt: Ukendt! |

Charlie Parker Charlie Parker With StringsSe flere produkter fra AmazonCharlie Parker welcomed the opportunity to record standards with a small string ensemble in 1949, and the results are stunning, his liquid alto soaring over the tuneful and only occasionally stiff arrangements. Along the way, he invests tunes like "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "Laura" with a unique blend of bluesy realism and mercurial improvisation. The CD adds live versions from a Carnegie Hall concert, and there are also two brilliant versions of Neal Hefti's "Repetition". The 1947 version has Bird flying spontaneously over the dense orchestration of horns, strings, and Latin percussion. --Stuart Broomer Fragt: Ukendt! |

Charles Mingus Mingus Ah UmSe flere produkter fra AmazonMercurial bassist and bandleader Charles Mingus was signed to Columbia Records for the briefest of time during 1959. His Columbia recordings, however, remain some of the most inspired, mood-jumping jazz in history. The flowing sadness of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" (unedited here for the first time on CD!) rings like a funeral chorus that pitches headlong into a celebration of Lester Young's life and improvising flexibility, rather than his death. And there's the funky furnace blast of "Boogie Stop Shuffle" (also unedited!), which reaches its glory with Booker Ervin's Texas tenor sax, wrapped tight in bluesy tone. With the index of emotions captured, these songs nail why Mingus is possibly the most relevant jazzer for the 1990s generation. He swings and shouts and hollers and somersaults. His tunes either induce foot-stomping with their intensity or reach for poignant yearning with their lyrical tapestry of orchestral colors. --Andrew Bartlett Fragt: Ukendt! |

Extreme Saudades De RockSe flere produkter fra AmazonAfter reaching their peak in the late 80s and early 90s with albums like Pornograffiti and chart-bothering ballads such as "More Than Words," American rockers Extreme seemed to deliquesce into the musical horizon, never to be heard from again. But 13 years later the band are back with a brand new album that re-treads their classic Queen-meets-Aerosmith "funky rock" schtick. "Saudades" is a Portuguese term for a form of nostalgia, usually for someone or something that you're missing - in this case, good old fashioned rock & roll. So they went into an LA studio and made some more. The original threesome--vocalist Gary Cherone, guitarist Nuno Bettencourt and bassist Pat Badger--teamed up with drummer Kevin Figueiredo to recreate a record that has all the hallmarks of their prior classics. Opening with the immediately contagious "Star" (which features some swaggering guitar and Queen-style harmonizing), Extreme barrel their way through funk rock ("Learn To Love"), catchy blues ("Take Us Alive"), sentimental ballads ("Ghost") and grunge ("Comfortably Dumb")--in other words, a little bit of everything. Cherone's vocals remains compelling and the band's mercurial fusion of genres is as tight as ever, making this a very welcome comeback. Fragt: Ukendt! |

Lee 'Scratch' Perry Upsetter Shop Vol.3: Baffling Smoke SignalsSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhen Lee "Scratch" Perry's Black Ark studios was gutted by fire, it was the Jamaican music equivalent of Sun Studios or Motown being incinerated. What music survived was a decidedly mixed bag; perhaps a fitting metaphor for the mysterious, mercurial--some would say half-mad--Perry himself. The dozen tracks here (almost all previously unreleased) hail from Black Ark's 1976-78 prime, a fertile period when Perry's studio dub mastery was at its zenith--and had already entrenched him as an influential touchstone amongst pop trend makers on both sides of the Atlantic. Powered by a hypnotic, deceptively laid-back rhythm groove (nicely underscored by an extended remix of Devon Irons'"Ketch Vampire"), Perry's spare production incorporates bluesy, studio-processed guitar heroics ("Full Experience") one moment and jazzy horn flourishes the next. The eight-minute plus mega-mix of Hugh Blackwood and Dr. Alimantado's "Reggae Music" explores the farther reaches of Perry's dub treat! ments, while an outtake of Jr Murvin's glorious "I Was Appointed" is set to another infectiously funky Perry electro-rhythm track. An anthology rife with revelations. --Jerry McCulley Fragt: Ukendt! |

Eliza Carthy Dreams of Breathing UnderwaterSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe daughter of acclaimed British folk artists Martin Carthy and Norma Waterson, Eliza Carthy has long been one of the major protagonists in the UK neo-folk renaissance. A dedicated and passionate artist, Carthy is also highly eclectic, as evinced on previous albums such as Red Rice, which blended drum & bass with folk fiddle amongst other unusual but largely successful experiments. Dreams Of Breathing Underwater is Carthy's seventh solo record and is predictably unpredictable. Opening with the 12-bar blues "Follow The Dollar", the album shapeshifts through the ethereal "Hug You Like A Mountain" and "Lavenders", the meandering "Rosalie", the funereal "Two Tears" and the captivating "Mr Magnifico" - right up to the dramatic, swinging denouement "Oranges And Seasalt". Carthy's vocals are as mercurial as her arrangements as she switches from angelic to angry, poignant to potent. There's never a dull moment as the songs flit insouciantly between Latin and reggae, electronica and blues, further underlining Carthy's skill as a songwriter and her imagination as an artiste. Schumann - The SymphoniesSe flere produkter fra AmazonSchumann's symphonies have persistently been plagued by indifferent audiences, bewildered performers, wrong-headed judgments and chronological confusion. The First, Op. 38, called "Spring" for its buoyancy, vigour and exuberance, was written in 1841, as was the next; however, substantially revised in 1852, this is now known as No. 4 Op. 120. (Though rarely performed, the original version is well worth hearing.) The symphony known as the Second, Op. 61, was begun in 1845, laid aside for health reasons and finished the following year. No. 3, Op. 97, the "Rhenish," is perhaps the most popular; written in 1850, it evokes the Rhine, the "sacred river" Schumann loved, celebrated in song, and finally turned to for deliverance from unendurable despair. Although loyal to his classical roots, Schumann gave his innovative originality free rein in the last two symphonies: the Third has five movements, the thematically cyclical Fourth is played without a break, and he discarded the traditional Italian tempo markings for German ones. The performances recorded here should dispel the hoary fallacy that Schumann was a miniaturist incapable of handling large forms and inept at orchestration. The Staatskapelle, Berlin's oldest orchestra, has these symphonies in its bloodstream; as the Opera's pit band, its glorious sound is undoubtedly influenced by working with singers: free of sharp edges and attacks, sustained, warm, and mellow. Barenboim, its Music Director since 1992, approaches the symphonies with profound intellectual understanding and emotional affinity, combining a sense of structure, coherence, irresistible sweep and grandeur with loving attention to expressive detail. Carefully balancing sonorities, he brings out usually hidden lines and voices, proving that Schumann's orchestration, often called turgid, is in fact transparent and full of colour. The first symphony's triumphant opening fanfare immediately takes us deep into Schumann's world of ardent, poetic romanticism, spontaneous imagination, mercurial mood changes: Fragt: Ukendt! |

Richard Hell TimeSe flere produkter fra AmazonSinewy, trashed and poetic, Richard Hell was the apotheosis of New York punk, as the double-CD Time shows; it's a suitably ragged catalogue of his work beyond Television and 1977's marvellous Voidoids LP, Blank Generation. Disc One begins in 1975, with four tracks from Hell's short stint in the Heartbreakers alongside Johnny Thunders. There's a first attempt at the seminal "Love Comes in Spurts" and a grizzled, heartfelt version of Dee Dee Ramone's junkie prayer, "Chinese Rocks". But Thunders' guitar playing sounds trad and clumsy next to the wiry garage art of Robert Quine, who drives some pretty spunky Voidoids tracks. It's these that prove the Voidoids, of the CBGB generation, sound most like the Strokes. Four from 1984, with Meters drummer Ziggy Modeliste and a skronky sax player on board, act as a curious epilogue to this brief, incendiary career. Hell dispassionately abandoned rock & roll for writing, and left his legend to grow largely untainted by bad records. A 1977 London gig provides the bulk of Disc Two. The sound quality is shocking, but it's clear the Voidoids had, fleetingly, a wild mercurial genius most bands only dream of, even when ritually massacring "I Wanna Be Your Dog". A year later in New York, Elvis Costello turns up to bellow "You Gotta Lose". Like most things here, it's a phenomenal mess. But a mess that's lost none of its potency to inspire and provoke. -- John Mulvey Fragt: Ukendt! |

David Gates The David Gates Songbook: a Lifetime in MusicSe flere produkter fra AmazonSinger/songwriter David Gates is perhaps best known for his role in crooning 1960s outfit Bread. Interestingly enough Gates left Bread at a time when they were riding high in all respects--hitting number one spots and gaining recognition around the world with catchy pop songs like "I Want to Make It with You". Since then he has enjoyed an eminent solo career, continuing to utilise his classical background to make sophisticated and accessible pop songs that are so highly polished you can see your face in them. This collection contains many of Gates's most poignant songwriting moments, including some of his hit songs with Bread, much of his released solo material, and several new records. With poetic string arrangements, distinctive and effortlessly mercurial vocals and trademark soppiness aplenty, Gates ensures his songs have an evergreen romantic quality. Indefatigable sentimentalists will weep with joy at this collection, but there are some golden moments here that everyone should hear. -- Paul Sullivan Fragt: Ukendt! |

Beethoven: The Violin SonatasSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis complete cycle of Beethoven violin sonatas was recorded during a series of live performances in 1998. Mutter devoted the entire year, together with her partner, Lambert Orkis, to an extensive global tour focused on these works, and the accounts are infused with a sense of cross-connection, expressive freedom and depth of insight acquired from such prolonged concentration. It shows Mutter in full maturity, commanding the artistic confidence to take risks and imprint her intensely personal signature. Mutter's characteristically sumptuous, caressing tone tends to be overstated for Beethoven's heartily playful turns and mercurial humour in the fast movements of the Op. 12 group, but the luminous beauty with which she phrases the "Adagio" of the Third Sonata is just one of many passages (consider, for example, Sonata No. 8's slow movement, as well) of sustained, heart-stopping poetry on this set. The famous Spring Sonata gains an added dimension in the context of the passionately engaged performance of its preceding companion/counterpart predecessor (the Fourth Sonata in A Minor). There's a full partnership between violin and piano (too often missing in accounts of these works) that allows Mutter and Orkis to play off each other with full-blooded spontaneity, perhaps at its most engrossing in the boldly searching scope of their Kreutzer Sonata, which stands in wonderful contrast to the intimate loftiness of the final Sonata in G--Mutter's own favourite. Throughout the set, Mutter couples her probing intelligence with nuanced phrasing, incisive rhythms and expressive gestures (notice the tender turn she gives to the all-important trill that opens the last sonata) to bore into the music, unearthing many buried treasures. The discs also include a handful of encores as bonbons and are encoded with CD-plus software so that listeners can follow the scores of four of the Sonatas. -- Thomas May Fragt: Ukendt! |

Rush Rush in RioSe flere produkter fra AmazonAstonishingly, Rush in Rio is the fifth live album of the Canadian power trio's career, and it's probably their best yet. This three-CD set is the audio companion to the double-DVD release of the same title: both formats commemorate the climactic concert of the Vapor Trails tour, in which Messrs Lee, Lifeson and Peart played to an ecstatic audience of 60,000 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on November 23, 2002. Kicking off with the crowd-pleasing "Tom Sawyer", Rush reach back into every phase of their catalogue to provide a bravura demonstration of musicianship infused with apparently limitless energy. In a pretty much flawless set of almost three hours' duration there's something to please everyone: classic 70s prog numbers ("The Trees", "2112"), the lighter 80s ("New World Man", "Bravado"), and newer 90s ("Driven", "Leave That Thing Alone"), not forgetting material from Vapor Trails itself. The surprise highlight of the evening follows Neil Peart's storming drum solo "O Baterista": an unplugged rendition of "Resist", with Lee and Lifeson on acoustic guitars. The tracklisting is the same as the DVD, with the addition of two "authorised bootleg" bonus tracks taken from earlier gigs during the same tour: "Between Sun and Moon" (originally from the Counterparts album) and "Vital Signs" (from Moving Pictures). Anyone who hasn't seen the film footage will wonder a little at the dragon noises during "One Little Victory"; nor will they get to see Neil Peart's revolving drum kit or Geddy Lee's washing machines; but with performance and sound mix of this quality, it's likely that Rush fans will not hesitate to acquire both formats. -- Mark Walker Fragt: Ukendt! |

Little Feat Waiting for ColumbusSe flere produkter fra AmazonFew rock concert documents can match this 1978 live album for sheer musicianship, or for its full-blooded representation of one of the best live bands ever. Little Feat's turbulent '70s pilgrimage had been studded with commercial detours when its second incarnation as a swampy, blues-rock sextet clicked musically, and these English and American dates, beautifully recorded by George Massenburg, capture the band in all its rowdy, precise glory. The late Lowell George's influence had been damped down in the studio, deferring to his bandmates' writing and singing, but Columbus is dominated by his gruff, lyrical vocal presence and the mercurial tang of his indelible slide guitar. With the Tower of Power Horns aboard to inject razor-sharp horn work, this romp through the Feat songbook of southern-fried rock represents a satisfying summation of the band's best works, every bit as engaging as their studio models. This is simmering, smart music measured by an honour roll of great songs with no lapses. The only caveat--and a minor one--is the deletion of two tracks to squeeze the original two LPs onto a single CD. --Sam Sutherland Fragt: Ukendt! |

Fingathing And the Big Red Nebula BandSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe rise of Peter Parker and Sneaky (aka Fingathing) has been slow-burning, propagated principally via a series of strategically placed live shows acclaimed for being forward-thinking, funky and not a little frenetic. Grand Central, Fingathing's third album, is almost certainly going to be a breakthrough project. Its conceptual premise is intriguing: following their faked deaths, they have been catapulted into space in metal coffins and have managed to record with a bunch of cosmic beings called The Big Red Nebula Band. Ahem. Needless to say, this situation presents the pair with an excuse to build an album from space-age beat-blocks and show us futuristic snapshots of life around their very own fantasy orbit. "Big Bang", "Cluster Buster", "Music to Watch Aliens By", "Bolus" and "Walk in Space" are all characterised by growling, mercurial basslines, mechanical, electro-edged riddims, cosmic b-boyism and a range of influences from rock, Sun-Ra afro-jazz and classical. 808 State Don SolarisSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn the late '80s, Eight-O-Eight State were at the forefront of England's still developing electronic music scene. Now, thanks to the mercurial trends that define the genre, the Manchester collective is nothing more than a blip on the techno radar. While new styles like drum & bass and hardfloor take the spotlight, Eight-O-Eight State continues crafting remarkable albums that sound like none other. Don Solaris is one of the most impressive electronic music outings of 1997, if not necessarily the most innovative. Pulling in vocal contributions from artists as diverse and stellar as Soul Coughing's M. Doughty ("Bond"), Lamb's Louise Rhodes ("Azura") and the Manic Street Preachers' James Dean Bradfield ("Lopez") certainly makes it contender as the most interesting. But the backbone of Eight-O-Eight State's sound is still in its propensity for propulsive rhythms and dazzling synthwork. Songs like "Jerusahat" and "Black Dartangon" practically soar out of the speakers. "Don Solaris" is as enchanting as any of the band's most popular work and a great testament to the potential emotional reach of electronica. --Aidin Vaziri Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bill Frisell RamblerSe flere produkter fra AmazonGuitarist Bill Frisell has always had an ear for unusual tonal colors, and they're particularly strong on this 1984 recording, an early and enduring document of a major musician's work. There is a distinctive emphasis on brass and the lowest registers, with Kenny Wheeler on trumpet and flÃ?gelhorn, Bob Stewart on tuba, and Jerome Harris on electric bass; drummer Paul Motian completes the quintet. The thick, bass-heavy textures and contrasting layers of sound give the music an almost orchestral quality, while Frisell and Wheeler's shared love of pitch bending sometimes gives the eerie sense of funhouse mirrors, a dream of sonic and temporal distortion. "Rambler" is a mirthful echo of mariachi music, "Music I Heard" is propelled by unlikely allusions to march rhythms, and "Resistor" has some of Frisell's most animated playing on disc, his guitar synth creating a Pandora's box of unexpected sounds and twisting, mercurial lines. -- Stuart Broomer Fragt: Ukendt! |
