Stravinsky: The Rite of SpringSe flere produkter fra AmazonStravinsky's Rite of Spring and Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy are, in many ways, the perfect coupling. Both works are, in their way, extreme, and both works suit Gergiev's unparalleled ability for penetrating to the heart of a score. He paints the Rite of Spring in vivid, almost garish colours, at all times reading the score afresh. Philips' superb recording successfully conveys both the visceral impact of "Spring Rounds" and the sheer raw energy of "Augurs of Spring". There is a sense of inevitability about the "Ritual Dance of the Ancestors"; the Sacrificial Dance, which follows, has its tension heightened because of (rather than despite) Gergiev's slightly deliberate tread. Scriabin's Poem of Ecstasy is late romanticism writ large. Above and beyond the perfumed sonorities, Gergiev identifies and projects an underlying disquiet, from the dark trumpet figures through to the shattering climax. At times the Kirov Orchestra is positively luminous. It is Gergiev's long-range grasp of the piece that is most impressive: the resultant cumulative effect is close to overpowering. -- Colin Clarke Fragt: Ukendt! |

Stu Phillips/Rsno Battlestar GalacticaSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn the wake of Star Wars (1977) came many a space opera seeking box-office glory. Battlestar Galactica (1978) started life as a television series, though after the pilot episode swept the ratings in America a shortened version was released in cinemas overseas. Composer Stu Philips's score was issued on LP and recycled through the life of the series, and this album is effectively a remake of that original release, with the composer himself winning strong performances from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. A dark "Prologue" leads to a rousing statement of the memorably heroic main theme. What follows is a complex, rather melancholy action score far grander in conception than the series for which it was written. There is a percussive fury to Phillips's writing, together with a foreboding lyrical quality which inevitably evokes comparisons with John Williams's great score for Star Wars, but also stands proudly in a tradition of fantasy music traceable to Bernard Herrmann's The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad (1958). Stu Phillips also composed the music for producer Glenn A. Larson's Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (1978), as well as the 1970's Spider-Man TV series, but it is his powerful Battlestar Galactica that remains his most enjoyable and lasting contribution to fantasy television. --Gary S Dalkin Fragt: Ukendt! |

Handel: MessiahSe flere produkter fra AmazonMarc Minkowski has led numerous outstanding Handel recordings but he's up against stiff competition in Messiah, of which there are plenty of outstanding ones to suit all tastes, from Colin Davis's traditional performance on Philips to those of early music specialists such as Hogwood, Suzuki and Christophers, among others. Minkowski is wildly original and his version is unlike any other; it will intrigue some and anger many. He indulges in sharp tempo extremes and encourages his vocalists to emote in ways that some will find overdone. The result is exciting at times, but wearing at others, as in "He was despised". The Hallelujah Chorus lacks grandeur and "Let us break the bonds asunder" sounds frantic even as one admires the chorus's articulation at impossible speeds. Some of the soloists are quite good--Brian Asawa's sweet countertenor is a big plus, but some of his colleagues aren't up to their competitors on disc. A provocative Messiah then, one collectors may want to supplement with other, more compelling versions. -- Dan Davis Fragt: Ukendt! |
