Beastie Boys To the 5 Boroughs [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonTo the 5 Boroughs, the Beastie Boys' first LP in six years, is a thunderous return to form. Dispensing with the electro experimentation of the more challenging Hello Nasty, the boys get back to basics, seeming to sense that the time is exactly right to launch the return of their old-skool sound. Lead single "Ch-Check It Out" blows open the doors, with its booming meaty beats and funky vibes, reminding us just how exciting the rap-rock genre was back in the day when these guys helped pioneer it, before all the whiney "Limp Linkins" came along and commodified it. To the 5 Boroughs captures the sound of the Beasties in their prime, spitting invective (as on the Bush-baiting "That's It That's All") over urgent bass-driven cuts with fortysomething voices that are as fresh as ever. They may be less concerned now with the Party than with a picnic ("grilled cheese", "flapjacks", "matzoh", "cholla", "falafel", "gorgonzola", "spaghetti" and "chicken tikka" all get a shout), but this isn't necessarily a bad thing. With age has come Buddhist-influenced wisdom, and gone are the misogynistic tendencies of old; these days they're more likely to be rapping about "the beach" rather than a bitch. Though these Beasties bring a message of love ("we gotta keep the party goin' on; all lifestyles sizes, shapes and forms") they're tighter and truer than ever. --Paul Eisinger Fragt: Ukendt! |

Cornell Campbell I Shall Not Remove 1975-1980Se flere produkter fra AmazonCampbell started recording for ska pioneer "Sir" Coxsone Dodd in 1959, then sang lead for both the Uniques and the Eternals in the 60s. In 1972, he began a fruitful partnership with producer Bunny Lee, whose nickname inspired the Gorgon business that takes over the set's first three tracks ["The Gorgon", "The Gorgon Speaks" and "The Conquering Gorgon"!). Lee shapes the majority of this disc's contents, using a host of key players which include Carlton Barrett, Earl "Chinna" Smith, Robbie Shakespeare, Tommy McCook and Earl "Wire" Lindo. Most of these numbers were recorded at King Tubby's, with the master dubber at the controls, but still retaining some sense of song-form "reality". Campbell is sweet-voiced throughout, holding his golden notes in mid-air. "The Gorgon Speaks" stands out, with its extra-spacious bass part, hissing hi-hat and dense horn stabs, then the album's title track maintains an accessible, uptempo stride, with jabbing organ fills courtesy of Lindo. Three versions of "Dance In A Greenwich Farm" are spliced together, a lolloping feast from Dr. Alimantado, The Aggrovators and Campbell himself, while "Two Face Rasta" boasts one of the collection's strongest melody lines, winding up, down and around, with a particularly nimble vocal performance.-- Martin Longley Fragt: Ukendt! |

Mr. Scruff Keep It Solid SteelSe flere produkter fra AmazonKeep it Solid Steel Pt 1 from Mr Scruff is the first of possibly four releases by him for the Solid Steel radio show. As ever, it's eclectic but the theme is definitely dancehall inspired with a bit of hip-hop thrown in. Thirty-something tracks, a few of which may seem tricky to mix are blended smoothly for a CD that is not chillout, not danceable, but designed for that bit of the day before a big night out. There are no "big tunes" as such but so many un-earthed gems that rarely see the light of day anymore such as BDP's cohort and ragga hip-hop pioneer Just Ice's "Way Back". Erykah Badu makes a welcome appearance with "Back in the Day" as do the Ultramagnetic MCs on "Ego Tripping". Back to the oldskool ragga and stalwarts of seminal UK hip-hop label Music of Life, the Demon Boyz, raise a smile with their big single "Recognition". Towards the end, things get more contemporary with upcoming UK hip-hop act Border Crossing's "Searching for Mr Manuva" and Warp's blip-hop crew Prefuse 73's "Detchibe" taking things up a notch. Keep it Solid Steel Pt 1 is another triumph in the popular series and another great mix album from one of the most respected underground/overground DJs in Britain.-- David Trueman Fragt: Ukendt! |

Eric Benet A Day in the LifeSe flere produkter fra AmazonEric Benét is a significant contender in the line of young soul men (Maxwell, D'Angelo, Kenny Lattimore) who combine thoughtful lyricism, an old school R&B feel, and smooth sensuality. One listen to Benét's second solo album, and there's no doubt about it: the Milwaukee native has all the elements to become a major star. The vocal and lyrical influence of Stevie Wonder is evident on "Lamentation", "Why You Follow Me", and the emotive ballad "Come As You Are", while Wyclef Jean's contribution, "Loving Your Best Friend", is one of the disc's highlights. Still, Benét is very much his own man on cuts like "When You Think of Me" (featuring 1970s jazz-funk pioneer Roy Ayers) and the heart-wrenching slow jam "Love the Hurt Away". --David Nathan Fragt: Ukendt! |

Sheryl Crow WildflowerSe flere produkter fra AmazonSince her 1993 debut, Tuesday Night Music Club, Sheryl Crow has been churning out unassailably appealing CDs in an unassailably appealing voice. Which means, according to the rules of the pop music cosmos, by album six it's about time for a misstep. Natural law, fortunately, will have to keep checking its watch. Wildflower moves Sheryl Crow one step closer to Hall of Fame status as she shunts the established rock star's impulse to get all experimental, but instead sprawls, rambling rose-like, across the substance-spiked pop landscape she helped pioneer. Three ingredients, glistening vocals, flawless production, and catchy songs rub up against one another in all the right places. These ingredients will cause you to hold your breath on the beautiful piano ballad "Always on Your Side." They pop up again on the George Harrison-esque "Where Has All the Love Gone" reminding you that Crow can reflect and reveal as convincingly as she can rock. If there is a ripple that runs through Wildflower, it's a pensive one. On the spacy "Chances Are," she sings of being "...lost inside a daydream." The measure of her talent, ripe and reappraisal-resistant, is her ability to consistently bring us inside the bubble with her. --Tammy La Gorce Fragt: Ukendt! |

Arthur Alexander The GreatestSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis is an outstanding compilation. Remastered from material recorded between 1962 and 1965, what's instantly apparent on hearing Alexander's plaintive tones is what a debt groups like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones owed to this sweet-voiced Southern country-soul pioneer from Alabama. The former covered his tragic, harmony-laden "Anna", the latter romped through "You Better Move On". Other artists who've sung Alexander-penned songs include Elvis Presley, Robert Plant and Tina Turner. Without exception, Alexander sang the originals better: in a soft, low crooning style somewhat akin to Sam Cooke, but with more expression in his smouldering voice. And, always, he was the loser in his bittersweet love affairs. An album for romantics and lovers of soft-centred soul. -- Everett True Fragt: Ukendt! |

Gary Numan Living Ornaments 1980: Live at Hammersmith Odeon 16th September 1980Se flere produkter fra AmazonThree live albums that capture synth pioneer Gary Numan at the peak of his powers, Living Ornaments '79, '80 and '81 - the first two recorded at Hammersmith Odeon, the third an epic `farewell' to the fans staged at Wembley Arena - are triumphant testaments to entertaining rock largesse. Nothing wrong with '79, exactly - within, there's fine takes on early Numan staples "Cars", "Are Friends Electric?", and "M.E". But it's the other two that ought to be big news for Numan fans. '80 will spark the plugs of the obsessives: over double the length of the lacklustre ten-track effort that first emerged in the Spring of '81, it completes the full performance using some recently rediscovered, digitally remastered footage taken direct from the mixing desk. Meanwhile, `81 is probably the pick of the bunch. Blessed with an expansive sound, and captured shortly before Numan started to lose control of his unstable muse, it sees him survey the landscape of Replicas, The Pleasure Principle, and Telekon with imperious poise and immaculate showmanship. The only regret is that you can't see the elaborate stage-set. --Louis Patterson Fragt: Ukendt! |

Eliane Elias DreamerSe flere produkter fra AmazonOn Dreamer, São Paulo-born, Manhattan-based pianist Eliane Elias performs bossa novas and brush-stroked ballads by North and South American composers from Johnny Mercer to Antonio Carlos Jobim. This project is a sort of musical homecoming for Elias, who once worked with bossa nova pioneer Vinicius de Moraes. Elias's pretty pianisms complement her breathy Portuguese/English contralto, especially on the 60s hit "Call Me", "Photograph (Fotografia)" and "So Nice (Samba de Verão)". Elias's two compositions, "Movin' Me On" and "Time Alone" can be considered smooth-jazz-friendly, but the Bahia bounce of "Doralice"--where Elias quotes Stan Getz's well-known tenor solo--and her instrumental rendering of Burt Bacharach's "A House is Not a Home" are highlights of this masterpiece of soft syncopation. Rob Mathes's elegant, Claus Ogerman-style string arrangements enhance the mood. --Eugene Holley Jr, Amazon.com Fragt: Ukendt! |

Manuel 'Guajiro' Mirabal Buena Vista Social Club Presents Manuel Guajiro MirabalSe flere produkter fra AmazonLike their peers the Funk Brothers, the ongoing, criminally unheard legacy of the Buena Vista Social Club's various legends continues to impress, and the emergence of 71 year-old Manuel Mirabal (a trumpeter of some repute in Cuban circles), for his spellbinding debut album, comes as no surprise. Those familiar with the premise of the Cuban grooves that were rediscovered through the original Buena Vista Social Club album and it's subsequent spin-off solo works will agree that the sound, feel and playing here ranks up with the greatest moments of this wonderful genre. Recorded as a tribute to Arsenio Rodriguez, a pioneer of Cuban music and modern salsa, even those unfamiliar will find much to love in this collection, not just in the fiery, masterful trumpet playing of El Guajiro, but also in the various guest vocalists (even newcomers and er, Gorillaz fans should recognize the none-more soulful vocals of Ibrahim Ferrer on "Deuda". Similarly, the backing musicians sound like the kind of band that are totally in simpatico with each other and work well to produce the finest grooves. With highlights too numerous to mention, this CD is essential to all, and a quiet contender for album of the year. --Thom Allott Fragt: Ukendt! |

Coleman Hawkins The Hawk Flies High [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe late 1950s was an excellent period for Hawkins and The Hawk Flies High stands out through its unusual line-up. In the 1940s the tenor pioneer had recorded regularly with young boppers such as Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis and JJ Johnson, but by the 1950s he was considered part of the mainstream revival and teamed more often with swing-era musicians. From the personnel here only the great Jo Jones belongs in the latter category and Johnson on trombone combines with Idrees Sulieman on trumpet to provide Hawkins with front-line partners firmly in the newer bop tradition. Sulieman is the more idiosyncratic, Johnson the more predictable, but both prove to be fine foils for Hawkins whose playing is inventive and full of feeling, with his tone even richer and broader than in earlier years. Re-mastering has clarified the rhythm section's contributions so that the fluent bass and piano of Oscar Pettiford and Hank Jones, together with the rhythm guitar and occasional solo by Barry Galbraith, can be followed throughout above the inspiring support of Jo Jones. Two ballads, mostly showcasing Hawkins, complement four brisker pieces and the last is a bouncing Hawkins original called "Sancticity" which provides a stirring conclusion. --Graham Colombé Fragt: Ukendt! |

Hanson - Orchestral WorksSe flere produkter fra AmazonHoward Hanson is one of America's great mid-century composers. His music, like that of Roy Harris, draws its character from the plains, from the pioneer blood that settled that part of the country. Here we have two major symphonies, a piano concerto, and a tone-poem, "Mosaics". These works are at the heart of American Romanticism; his melodies are distinct and tonal, his writing formal. He's not as idiosyncratic as Roy Harris or as buoyant as Copland and his music never went into other areas of 20th- century experimentation. But his symphonies, particularly the Fifth, belong in every collection. --Paul Cook Fragt: Ukendt! |
