Recorded in 1964 at the same club where the Beatles cut their teeth, Live at the Star Club, Hamburg captures the Killer when he was on the outs as a recording artist. (It took him years to recover from the scandal that ensued when he wed his 13-year-old cousin, Myra Gale Brown.) Lewis didn't require acceptance, however; he just needed an audience, a piano, and a rhythm section willing to hang on to "old Jerry Lee" for dear life. The repertoire is rife with staples of the day--"Money," "Mean Woman Blues," "Long Tall Sally," "Hound Dog"--but the Killer has no trouble customizing them with his pumping piano and insinuating vocals. Michael Jackson InvincibleSe flere produkter fra AmazonFor such a boldly titled and apparently driven attempt to reinstate Michael Jackson at the centre of the pop world, Invincible is a listless thing. Split between scratchy funk workouts and mid-tempo ballads that might have appeared as Bad B-sides, the album plays on and on while never seriously promoting dancing or romancing. Its handful of weird moments--the resurrection-by-tape of Biggie Smalls on the bridge of the title track, for instance--are hardly large-scale bizarre like the first disc of HIStory. The title track turns out to be hardly the rampant ego-fest you'd imagine; instead, its subject is a female whom Jackson cheers on. Likewise, the most ear-catching moments of the "comeback" single "You Rock My World" come with Chris Tucker's jivey introduction. Despite a debt to "Payback"-era James Brown, "Rock" floats away like steam midway through. It's almost a relief when the old self-regard turns up: on the growling "Privacy", Jackson rants about muckrakers "stalking" him in search of "the stories you need to bury me", all this long after foundering divas and troubled boy-group members have replaced him on tabloid covers. Nas God's SonSe flere produkter fra AmazonDespite its grandiose title, God's Son features a semi-repentant Nas. After his stunning debut, many moons ago, it's been downhill ever since for the New York MC. Embroiled in petty spats, overblown productions, large paydays and a huge case of ego-itus, his original brilliance seemed lost forever. However the two-disc God's Son is a return to form. The first single, "Made You Look" is a barnstorming collaboration with Fat Joe. "The Book of Rhymes" is Nas back to his lyrical best, once again showing himself as the real inheritor to Rakim's MC crown. Nas goes deep into the funk on "Get Down", which features a heavy chunk of James Brown, another echo of Rakim's work to which Nas has openly aspired to. There are unsavoury moments. Nas's referral to sleeping with hookers on "Pussy Killz" veers between a sexual-health warning and a tongue lashing of women in general. He also advocates the creationist theory on "Dance". Perhaps he's trying to get the Texas Christian vote? However, such lyrical theorising will probably pass most by--those who just want to hear the beats. On this, God's Son delivers particularly well, especially with the Alicia Keys-enhanced tribalist "Warrior's Song". God's Son suffered heavy bootlegging prior to release and the track listing changed radically. Plenty of (good) material wasn't officially released--undoubtedly there's another Lost Tapes album on the way. Tupac's appearance on "Thugz Mansion" is proof positive that the Tupac impersonator out there is doing very good business. Twista Kamikaze: Parental AdvisorySe flere produkter fra AmazonTwista's warp-speed raps may have got him into the Guinness Book of World Records, but Kamikaze confirms that there's more to him than just outpacing the competition. He can out-boast them too. Straight out of the blocks he's taunting his peers, waving his bank balance, record sales and gangsta credentials in their faces, challenging them to come and have a go if they think they're fast enough. Though hardly abnormal rap behaviour, for once, having an ego bigger than America isn't without reason. "Get Me" and "Pimp On" may be stock gangsta frontin', but their respective bleak drama and cruising slouch would make Jay-Z nod along approvingly. But it's when he turns his hyperactive couplets to having fun that really scores. Relaxing to a G-funk strut, "Drink" has him cheekily working through the cocktail menu, recalling various ladies that the exotic concoctions (Sex on the Beach, Slow Screw) remind him of. Meanwhile, running through a list of smooth soul artists who will improve his pulling power, single "Slow Jamz" rolls out a satiny groove and a sly sense of humour: "I'm gonna play this Vandross, you gonna take your pants off." For sure there's a lot of uninspired droning about cash and guns, but when he finds his imagination, Twista makes being a pimpmobile-driving rap star sound like a lot of fun. --Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Thorns is a bright, buoyant summit meeting of contemporary popmeisters Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins and Pete Droge. Backed by an all-star studio ensemble that includes Jim Keltner, Greg Leisz, Brendan O'Brien and Roy Bittan, the three nominally insulated musicians do more than claim the legacy of Crosby, Stills & Nash on the harmonic riches of "Think It Over" and the glorious "Now I Know". (It's equally hard to imagine the baby-boom icons wrapping themselves around the chunky funk of the title track here or the pointed impressionistic allegory of "Dragonfly".) They also find a musical common ground that can't help but echo history in its folk-rooted vocal glories yet forges an ego-sublimating higher ground that's anything but nostalgic. Fans of the three musicians may recognise their various sensibilities at work throughout, but this is a rewarding collaboration that virtually defies deconstruction. The major problem with Echoboy, at this early stage, is Warren's apparent difficulty in locating the line that divides impressive diversity from bewildering lack of focus: a list of the influences that have inspired his music would include such disparate sources as Stereolab, Television, the Stone Roses, Kraftwerk and the Chemical Brothers. Sometimes it works okay--especially with "Walking" which is a lovely pastoral ballad.
