Loverboy Loverboy Classics: Their Greatest HitsSe flere produkter fra AmazonUsurping the Big Ones hits package, the self-depreciating, proud, and humorous liner notes by bassist Scott Smith boost this definitive compilation. Glasvegas GlasvegasSe flere produkter fra AmazonGlasvegas are a four-piece from Glasgow - the latest band to be championed by industry mogul Alan McGee, the man that "discovered" Oasis. Despite the inevitable hyperbole that has followed McGee's proclamation of the band, Glasvegas more than deliver on their early promise with this eponymous debut album. The quartet already showcased their earthy wit and sonic ambitions on singles such as "Daddy's Gone," a heartfelt tale of soured father-son relations delivered in an uncompromising Glaswegian accent and set to a shimmering wall of rock & roll. Glasvegas continues in more or less the same vein. Singer James Allen reels off stories of everyday city life over euphonious, pop-edged soundtracks that blend 50s surf rock, layered, Phil Spector-esque production values and the occasional splash of 60s doo wop. Tracks like the arching "Flowers and Football Tops", the confessional "It's My Own Cheating Heart That Makes Me Cry" and the upbeat "Legs & Show" contrast with darker songs like "Stabbed" and "Go Square Go!". The band's down-to-earth worldview combined with their nostalgic sound and surging, sing-a-long choruses makes for a rich and enjoyable musical tapestry. Fragt: Ukendt! |

Oasis Stop the ClocksSe flere produkter fra AmazonTerrace anthem heroes or rock plagiarists: how will history judge Oasis? Well, if a band's Greatest Hits is their dispatch to the ages, Stop The Clocks -- a two CD collection that spans the ins and outs of their career from debut single "Supersonic" to 2005's sixth studio album Don't Believe The Truth -- suggests that whether you believe they lost their way in a blizzard of cocaine around the time of 1997's Be Here Now or put their first foot wrong the day Liam first put crayon to paper as lyricist -- at their best they're quite simply at the top of their game. First up, a run-through the early stuff: band manifesto "Rock'n'Roll Star', their first chart-topper "Some Might Say", and its B-side, the acoustic, Noel-sung "Talk Tonight". In such context, later efforts like "Lyla" and "Go Let It Out" lack the obvious hunger of what came before, but they demonstrate exactly why Oasis got as huge as they did: their affinity for the stomping, Slade-derived swagger and runway-width choruses just perfect for filling stadiums and football fields. Fans who shelled out for Oasis' B-sides compilation The Masterplan might feel mugged by the decision to reprise four tracks here, but a genuine Oasis Best Of wouldn't seriously work without the presence of "Acquiesce". Live forever? These songs just might. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Funeral For A Friend Tales Don't Tell ThemselvesSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn Tales Don't Tell Themselves, Funeral For A Friend have penned their catchiest, most mainstream-friendly album to date. The band's previous album, 2005's Hours, saw Bridgend's emo-tinged rockers soften their sound slightly, hardcore breakdowns and shrieked metal vocals receding and a more tuneful, melodic edge coming to the fore. On Tales..., Funeral walk further down this road. There's little trace of the angry hardcore tykes who wrote songs like "The Art Of American Football", but songs like "Into Oblivion (Reunion)" and the Smashing Pumpkins-tinged "Open Water" are presented with the sort of anthemic widescreen that suggest My Chemical Romance should watch their back. Elsewhere, though, there's signs of a growing songwriting maturity that might one day spring F4AF out of the punk ghetto for good: Matt Davies' lyrics reach far beyond emo's typical boy-meets-girl concerns, individual tracks linked by a narrative about a shipwrecked fisherman desperate to be reunited with his family, while the violin peaks and mighty drum rolls of "Raise The Sail" suggest Funeral For A Friend are eager to extend their musical palette. An impressive evolution. -- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Beautiful South The Housemartins Soup + DVDSe flere produkter fra AmazonYou'll hear talk of national treasures, and there's no denying that erstwhile singer Paul Heaton is as quintessentially English as they come. Given his service to pop over the past 20 years, he's fairly valuable too. But he's certainly not the shiny sort, "bling" was just the sound a football made when it rebounded off rusting goalposts in the park when he started making records--his value is more akin to a warm mug of tea and a custard cream from the corner shop on a rainy afternoon. For a newer generation perhaps only familiar with the likes of The Beautiful South's "Perfect 10" it's worthwhile going back to the beginning to see why. The Housemartins (also the all singing--if not all dancing--apprenticeship for superstar DJ Norman Cook, aka Fatboy Slim) were a very fine singles band indeed, rushes of acoustic pop and Humberside barbershop harmonies with all the keenness that youth can afford. A virulent "Five Get Over Excited" and "Happy Hour", alongside peerless a capella cover "Caravan of Love", stand testament to an all too brief career. This is where the Beautiful South took up the reigns with a more mature, but no less catchy or vocally impressive, output, spinning timeless comforts like "You Keep It All In", "A Little Time" and "Old Red Eyes Is Back". Soup is the first time the work of the two bands has been collected onto one disc and while 22 tracks is never going to do justice to such an expansive back catalogue, it's a splendid starting point. --James Berry Fragt: Ukendt! |

Blur 13Se flere produkter fra AmazonIt all begins with a music-box noise, not entirely unlike the beginning of Trumpton (you know, the kids' programme with the curiously named firemen). Welcome to yet another new identity for Blur. Gone are the caricatures of bed-and-breakfast owners and bankers, the cockernee knees-ups, football and pub laddisms. 13 is the starkest, most personal Blur album ever, going further in the direction the previous self-titled album hinted at. Dealing, for the most part, with frontman Damon Albarn's broken relationship with Elastica's Justine Frischmann, it's as if Blur have ripped their heart out and left the bloody mess for all to see. "Tender", with its repetitive cycle of a tune and gorgeous gospel choir, must surely remind you of someone special, while "No Distance Left to Run" is pure, unashamed heartbreak. Relief comes in the form of the sweet, Graham Coxon-penned "Coffee and TV" and "B.L.U.R.E.M.I", which recalls their punkier days. Oh, and "Bugman" appears to have utilised the previously untapped musical properties of a vacuum cleaner. "Country House" this is not. --Emma Johnston Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Jam The Sound of the JamSe flere produkter fra AmazonAlthough the disappointingly bland sleevenotes from The Jam's A&R manager Dennis Munday rather give away the lack of involvement of Messrs Weller, Foxton and Buckler, this 26-track Woking Wonders best of, The Sound of the Jam, is tough to argue with. Indeed, unless you want to invest in the five-CD Direction Reaction Creation boxed set, this 25th anniversary collection is the best Jam primer released thus far. The Sound Of... heads chronologically from the debut "In The City" single to farewell one-off "Beat Surrender", by way of the most notable chart hits and a sprinkling of classic album tracks. Although a fan may quibble with the exclusion of peak period singles "All Around The World", "Strange Town" and "When You're Young", and the presence of the misanthropic "Mr Clean" and a disappointing unreleased version of "That's Entertainment", what strikes anew is the taut energy of the trio's playing, the bitter bile of Paul Weller's lyrical themes, and the sophisticated, hook-packed update of Britbeat from one so young (Weller was still only 24 when he split the biggest band in Britain in 1982). Twenty years later, The Jam still show up the lack of courage and relevance in current British pop. --Garry Mulholland Fragt: Ukendt! |

Neil Hamburger Left for Dead in MalaysiaSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe charms of standup comedian Neil Hamburger are mostly subtle: the self-proclaimed America's Funnyman takes an Andy Kaufman-meets-Steve Martin approach to humour that usually isn't so funny at all. Or is it? For those who find themselves laughing at--rather than with--most comedians, Hamburger is worth checking out. His jokes vary from the tired to the horrific, and yet hearing all these clichés woven into one long set, you can't help smiling. On earlier discs we heard the comedian's priceless banter with fans at live shows in Albuquerque (New Mexico), Modesto (California), and Las Vegas and even an attempt at X-rated comedy. Compared with those discs, Left for Dead in Malaysia is more of a morality play--or is it a play on morality? Gone is the zipper shtick, gone is his manager Art Huckman (offended by Hamburger's ongoing ribbing, he walks out mid-routine), gone is an audience that understands English. But, left alone onstage in front of a club full of Malaysians eager for the karaoke hour, Hamburger performs one of his finest, most introspective sets, with heartburn-felt jokes about ex-wives, fast food, potato chips, and the Spice Girls. Irony-free lovers of standup, beware: you aren't going to get any of this. But for the rest of us, this high-concept, lowbrow take on standup is priceless--and Hamburger's finest moment to date. --Jason Verlinde Fragt: Ukendt! |

Pulp The John Peel SessionsSe flere produkter fra AmazonPulp's Peel sessions have often been the stuff of legend. The band hold the dubious distinction of having the longest gap between sessions (the first was in 1981, the followup in 1993) and between that time they went through enough lineup changes to fill a football squad, with Jarvis Cocker being the sole mainstay. Thus, the leap on the first disc between the first four tracks of early, scratchy new wave pop--three of which were never recorded again--and the sophisticated Europop of the tracks from the acclaimed His'n'Hers onwards, is quite a distance in terms of ability and sound. Throughout the first disc, which comprises the Peel Sessions proper, we get a glimpse at an early, slightly hesitant version of "Common People" the definitive recording of "You're A Nightmare" which the band used as a B-side, and the legendary unreleased "Duck Diving", which is a charming narrative somewhere between "David's Last Summer" (from 1998's His'n'Hers) and "The Trees" (2001's We Love Life). The second disc is a compilation of the band at their fearsome live best and shows their ability to translate their shiny pop sound into accessible, enjoyable pop music for the masses. An excellent accompaniment to the recent Pulp Deluxe reissues. --Thom Allott Fragt: Ukendt! |

'N Sync 'n SyncSe flere produkter fra AmazonYes, it's another group of five young white boys making dance-influenced pop that makes the girls scream. Not only is the makeup of this group familiar, their sound is almost a clone of fellow teenybopper dreams the Backstreet Boys. It's probably not surprising, considering that they share the same manager (who had all five members of 1980s preteen scream machine New Kids on the Block as the best men at his wedding, natch). The resemblance is a little too close for comfort, however, with almost every track here mirroring one on the Backstreet Boys album. From the radio hit "I Want You Back" and the sugary harmonizing on ballads like "God Must Have Spent a Little More Time on You" to the one step forward, two steps back approach to sex appeal on "Giddy Up", 'N Sync--or their producers--have crafted the perfect balance of catchy pop ditties and swoon-inducing slow jams. --Rebecca Wallwork Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ricky Martin The Best of Ricky Martin: Slide PackSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's his continuous search for new ways to blend el ritmo, with elements of pop, rock and funk that has made Ricky Martin one of the biggest selling pop acts of our time and hence worthy of a Best Of collection. Nothing to do with his penchant for vigorous hip thrusting mid-video, or the fact that his name crops up on "World's Best Looking" lists with predictable regularity. But love him or loath him, you can't argue with over 30 million album sales worldwide. The by now brain-numbingly familiar ("La Vida Loca", "Maria", "She Bangs"), are interspersed with tracks that leave one with a strange sense of déjà vu--so disappointingly formulaic is the Martin production machine. Staccato riffs from the brass, football chants for choruses and enough samba magic to bring the 4th of July to any soporific Christmas afternoon with the grandparents. And all rounded off with a bonus collaboration with Madonna on "Be Careful" ("Live to Tell" combined with latino guitar is all very pretty). -- Ruby Tuesday Fragt: Ukendt! |

Westlife Coast to CoastSe flere produkter fra AmazonAt the time of Coast To Coast's release, Westlife could do no wrong. With a staggering record of every one of their seven singles hitting the top spot of the British charts, they were really at the peak of their game. Within a week of this, their second album's release, their cultural forefathers Boyzone announced it was game over, leaving their most successful member Ronan Keating balancing his solo career and his job as Westlife's manager, aided and abetted by Louis Walsh, the man who made Boyzone and who was now firmly focused on his five new Irish wonder boys,. Together they have come up with a winning formula--good looks, ballads and gentle pop--and they rigidly stick to it. After all if it ain't broke don't fix it--look what happened to the Spice Girls, swept aside thanks to a combination of a radical change of direction combined with Westlife power. As such, the album itself is hardly a challenging affair, in fact the only things that really jump out and grab you are the aberration that was their duet with Mariah Carey on "Against All Odds" and their butchering of Abba's "I Have A Dream"--taking the lush harmonies of the original and turning them into the aural equivalent of wallpaper paste. However, it isn't all totally bland, there are moments where the harmonies shine through and the pop sensibilities come to the fore, such as "My Love", "When You're Looking Like That" and "Dreams Come True", in fact anything that is remotely up-tempo and a break from the relentless wishy washy nondescript ballads. This is the sound of Westlife at the peak of their career--the only trouble is, with their phenomenal track record and the wonderful fickleness of the British pop charts, the only way from here is down. -- Helen Marquis Fragt: Ukendt! |

Foals AntidotesSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's hardly the cure for anything but Antidotes, the debut album from Oxford's Foals, is a strong addition to the eternal tradition of dance-friendly art rock most recently exemplified by Franz Ferdinand and Klaxons. The five ex-public schoolboys that make up Oxford's Foals are hardly lacking self-confidence--comically cocky frontman Yannis Phillipakis could annoy for the nation and the band rejected producer David Sitek's original mix--but Antidotes is anything but pony. After spending their youth in rigorous "math rock" outfits, Foals started out in 2005 with the stated intention of having fun. Rather delightfully, this amounted to the discovery that audiences are well disposed to acts they can dance to. A clutch of well-received singles and a guest spot on popular sixth-form satire Skins sealed their popularity. Their origins in academic rock are sometimes obvious, but fine drummer Jack Bevan keeps things moving throughout. Opener "The French Open", with its gleeful chanted vocals (in French) and fashionable Afrobeat tinged guitar lines, evokes Talking Heads' dada nonsense classic "I Zimbra", itself older than any Foal. First top thirty hit "Cassius" saw jazz-punk back in the charts for the first time since that perennial football crowd favourite "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag". "Olympic Airways" is a charming if oblique tale of escape that couldn't be further from the bus stop/chip shop style while "Red Socks Pugie" already sounds like a single in waiting. The lyrics might charitably be described as impressionistic and Phillipakis's voice remains nondescript. But with better tunes than Bloc Party and a self-conscious precision that recalls Mogwai in their pomp, the effortlessly pretentious Foals are unmistakably the sound of 2008. --Steve Jelbert Fragt: Ukendt! |

Queen Flash Gordon: Original SoundtrackSe flere produkter fra AmazonDialogue on a soundtrack album is normally a huge mistake. You smirk maybe the first few times, then grow rapidly frustrated having to programme out the offending tracks (if possible). Then there are those rare few where it would be impossible to imagine one without the other ( Pulp Fiction for example). Thankfully Flash Gordon belongs in the latter camp ("camp" being entirely appropriate in this context). The idea of using Queen for this sci-fi hokum was both daring and inspired. On the other side of the universe-friendly title chant of "Flash!" is a remarkably varied score. There are five principal themes ("Flash", "Love", "Ming", "Vultan" and "Battle"), yet there are plenty more. In fact, there are yet more in the film that didn't make it to the album--this is a straight digital master of the 1980 LP. Clap your hands to the Football game in Ming's Court, attempt the high notes in "The Kiss", find a keyboard that can emulate "Ming's Theme" today or just enjoy screaming "DIVE !" with Brian Blessed. Incredibly the band were only once called upon in a similar capacity again for Highlander. --Paul Tonks Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists Africa - Rhythms of AfricaSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis collection belies its all-embracing title, concentrating on the Zimbabwean bands that comprised Cooking Vinyl's early roster. Flash back to the mid-1980s, when Jit Jive was an important sub-category across the fledgling "world music" racks: the Bhundu Boys and the Four Brothers were the most popular exponents, each represented by two tracks apiece (with another pair from departed Bhundu Biggie Tembo). The trademark sound is best illustrated by Rudo Chete, with Four Brothers leader Marshall Munhunumwe combining stepping bass drum, snicking hi-hat and tom-tom bomb-drops, guitars weaving a glistening web around his spacious beats. "Radio Africa" was the most commercial moment enjoyed by the Bhundus, its mixture of bubbly melody and melancholic sentiments perhaps foreshadowing the personal tragedies that would soon decimate the band. The lesser-known Machanic Manyeruke also provides two cuts, but the almost-forgotten gems come courtesy of the Real Sounds, Wende Zako starts with gentle horn nudges, lifting into a singalong section complete with succulent guitar lattice, then closing with their epic Afro-football commentary "Dynamos Vs. Tornados". The odd one out is S.E. Rogie, the acoustic Palm Wine purveyor from Sierra Leone, his appealingly quaint rambles emanating from the ancient era of vinyl-crackles. -- Martin Longley Fragt: Ukendt! |

Haven Between The SensesSe flere produkter fra AmazonBetween the Senses, the debut album by tender Cornish rock balladeers Haven, shuffles into the spotlight with no mean amount of expectation resting upon its slender shoulders. Not only was this band relocated to Manchester under the guiding hand of Joe Moss, ex-manager of The Smiths, but Between the Senses was produced by that band's stellar guitarist, Johnny Marr. This pedigree suggests that there's something truly great brewing in the imaginations of these four young men. Far from The Smiths' sprightly witticisms, however, Haven display a grounding in more traditional rock touchstones like Buffalo Springfield and Quicksilver Messenger Service. These are songs of sweeping anthem and ornate ambition, songs that pad along the well-trodden path of earnest indie-rock, snapping hungrily at Coldplay's heels. While "Beautiful Thing" and "Say Something" swoon up there with the best of them, Between the Senses does feel a little threadbare towards the end, let down by a reliance on mid-pace rock songs and a limited palette of moods. Ultimately, this is a sturdy, competent debut. But for Haven to really live up to their much-vaunted potential, they're going to have to come up with something that resonates with a power that right now sounds maddeningly just beyond their grasp.-- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Engelbert Humperdinck His Greatest Hits [Us Import]Se flere produkter fra AmazonEngelbert Humperdinck, who at the circa 1968 height of his career shared a manager with fellow hunk Tom Jones, has never enjoyed the campy appreciation that has come to Jones in recent years--mostly because he's way too earnest compared to the teasingly all-man singer of "What's New Pussycat" and "She's a Lady." Humperdinck certainly deserves a place on some space-age bachelor's mix tape with the quietly ebullient "Quando Quando Quando," the quietly invitational "Winter World of Love," and the quietly fatalistic "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize"--maybe yours. Pop Will Eat Itself PWEI Product 1986-1994: The Pop Will Eat Itself AnthologySe flere produkter fra AmazonPWEI Product: 1986-1994 brings together the finest moments of the group--and there are many. From the fuzzy guitar-driven beginnings of "Sick Little Girl" and "Monogamy" to the stunning simplicity of "There Is No Love Between Us Anymore" and the infectious romps of "Wise Up Sucker" and "PWEI-zation", there's never a dull moment. Pop Will Eat Itself, along with the Wonder Stuff, were the figureheads of the grebo movement that came straight out of Birmingham in the early 1990s with long hair, brightly coloured clothing and bouncy tunes. And while the Wonder Stuff got a fiddle player and went all serious, the Poppies got a sampler and became even more stupid, while unwittingly being streets ahead of their time. They toured with Public Enemy and got bottled offstage, sampled and looped all the popular culture they could get their hands on ( Blade Runner, football commentaries, Repo Man, Frank SinatraÂ?) and developed their own stunning graphics and cartoon characters while the Gorillaz were still either in Blur or designing sleeves for grebo also-rans the Senseless Things. --Helen Marquis Fragt: Ukendt! |

Doves The Last BroadcastSe flere produkter fra AmazonWith new-found optimism aplenty, The Last Broadcast sees frontman Jimi Goodwin and multi-instrumentalist brothers Andy and Jez Williams soaring to new if perhaps grandiose heights. Two years on from their Mercury Music Prize nominated debut Lost Souls and the dishevelled guitar-toting Manchester trio look to have finally put the demise of their ill-fated dance act Sub Sub, the burning down of their studio and the later death of their manager Rob Gretton behind them. The thundering opening beat and spiralling guitars of "Words" are reminiscent of Ride at their bombastic peak, while "There Goes the Fear" relentlessly reverberating with Latin rhythms, New-Order-influenced guitars and sweeping vocals is nothing less than breathtaking. Quiet reprieve comes with M62, a delicate haunting reworking of King Crimson's "Moonchild", bizarrely recorded under the M62 flyover in Manchester, its desolate atmospherics are juxtaposed to the remainder of the album. With the thrusting onslaught of "Pounding", the obligatory earthy rock of "NY" and the joyous pastoral acoustic-led splendour of "Caught by the River", the Doves have crafted a liberating sophomore album that happily combines the uplifting anthemic essence of dance with good old rock & roll. -- Christopher Barret Fragt: Ukendt! |

Stevie Ray Vaughan In the BeginningSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis visceral live recording from April 1, 1980, was broadcast on radio from the Steamboat 1874 club in Stevie Ray Vaughan's adopted hometown, Austin, Texas. It circulated among collectors and his manager used some of the tape as a demo before Vaughan was signed to Epic Records by John Hammond. Young Stevie Ray's performance bristles with uncorked energy: Vaughan is caught improvising on raw slide guitar, growling through Otis Rush's "All Your Love (I Miss Loving)" and pushing his fretboard speed and vocal limits on Guitar Slim's "They Call Me Guitar Hurricane."
