Torrential creativity has fast-forwarded the artistic evolution of former Whiskeytown frontman Ryam Adams from country-rock boy wonder to despondent troubadour with a 1960s fixation (his solo debut Heartbreaker), but it may also explain why listeners often need to wade through some pedestrian material just to find a few pearls of poetic excellence. Gold is no exception to that trend, a sometimes engaging middle-of-the-road roots-pop album that's both overlong (70 minutes) and at times overindulgent. There are high spots--such as the bouncy, breezy opener "New York, New York" and the plaintive ballad "When the Stars Go Blue" (which features a vocal turn reminiscent of Morrissey)--but much of the disc gets lost in forests of indistinct guitars and plodding percussion that never nudges Adams into actually rocking. Gold is the work of a notoriously prolific songwriter who hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths, one whose execution doesn't yet match his vision. --Anders Smith Lindall

No Cities Left, the debut album from Montreal, Canada's The Dears, confirms it's not just American acts like Interpol and The Killers who currently harbour a guilty crush on the luminous charms of British indie. Such Anglophilic sentiments appear to be mostly courtesy of bandleader Murray Lightburn, whose warm, swoonworthy vocal delivery is pitched somewhere between the warm croon of Morrissey and Damon Albarn caught at his most nakedly earnest. But it would be unfair to dismiss "Lost in the Plot" or "Expect the Worst/'Cos She's A Tourist" on the basis of geography alone, particularly as so often, they threaten to match - and occasionally overwhelm - the originals from which they draw inspiration. An extended line-up that includes a three-piece horn section, The Brebeuf Brass, as well as violin, sax, and double bass brings an fullness of sound to songs like "Pinned Together, Falling Apart"--and Lightburn's refreshingly irony-free delivery leads to some truly lump-in-throat moments: "I have never cried in anybody's arms," he sings on "The Death Of All The Romance", "The way I have often cried in yours." --Louis Pattison

Set up by Nirvana producer Butch Vig, featuring two veteran session musicians from Madison, Wisconsin and singer Shirley Manson of no-hit-wonder 1980s Scottish band Goodbye Mr Mackenzie, Garbage surprised themselves as much as anyone else when they hit payout with their debut album. Their success made sense, though. Although it's guitar rock, Garbage were plugged into state-of-the-art studio software, generating a cybergoth sound as black, flexible and synthetic as PVC, capable of odd morphing effects to match the plunging mood swings of tracks like "Vow". In the over-cheery mid-1990s, dominated by Britpop and boy bands, songs like "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" were a welcome antidote, while Shirley Manson emerged as the most potent, self-aware and no-nonsense rock frontwoman since Chrissie Hynde, flaunting the darker side of her psyche with the same menacing intent as she flaunted a pink feather boa onstage. -- David Stubbs

Although his first solo record flopped, this release looked like the beginning of a superstar career. Brown, a former lead vocalist with New Edition (he was replaced by Johnny Gill, but both men participate in most NE reunions) has an appealing, if somewhat grainy, voice. It's a good match for the hip-hop beats that underpin some of the best songs here, especially "My Prerogative", which at the time sounded like an anthem. His ability to deftly merge R&B's upscale and hip-hop street aesthetic (both Teddy Riley and Babyface produce tracks on this CD) changed the role of the rake hero. Sadly, this was Brown's lone significant musical moment as a solo artist. --Martin Johnson

A performance of striking grandeur, likeable honesty and (most importantly) touching humanity, well worth acquiring for under a fiver. As on previous volumes in his Bruckner series for Naxos, Georg Tintner is a formidably sure-footed guide through this awesome terrain, securing an utterly whole-hearted response from the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (whose brass, in particular, is glorious). Despite some leisurely tempi, neither intensity nor concentration falter in both mighty outer movements (climaxes fairly smoulder with truculent defiance), while the "Scherzo" combines thrusting athleticism with ample bite. Those in search of a touch more tonal opulence and effortless homogeneity should perhaps stick with either Daniel Barenboim (Teldec) or GÃ?nter Wand's latest RCA recording (both featuring the incomparable Berlin Philharmonic). What's more, the great Wilhelm FurtwÃ?ngler's incandescent 1944 interpretation (again with the BPO) distils a truly devastating emotional candour that no successor has ever begun to match. Within the very lowest price-range, however, Tintner has no serious challengers and his finely engineered version represents superb value for money. --Andrew Achenbach

Formed in the early 1990s, and comprised sundry session singers, Abbacadabra are already following a very similar business route to the group they mimic so well. Mama Mia is an in-the-mix HI-RNG medley of new-recordings by Abbacadabra of Bjorn et al's classic cuts. The Almighty popsters certainly do provide a worthy service with their dance versions of the tunes ABBA will probably never perform again. Their mixes also provide that added up tempo zing which the original versions have always lacked--for instance no one else can match Abbacadabra's pumped up cover of "The Winner Takes It All". Some of the versions do sound rather dated though, with the Robert Miles style "The Day Before You Came", and the "Bilingual" Pet Shop Boys / Simply Red "Fairground" drumming on "Fernando" making it feel like it's 1996 all over again. That said the "in the mix" format and the familiarity of the tunes on this 2-CD set makes it ideal for kitsch / retro parties. -- John Galilee

A match made in avant-pop heaven: Kathy Acker, lesbian punk heiress to William Burroughs's edge-of-humanity literature, together with the Mekons, eclectic punk survivors and underground music gods and goddesses. In a musical/literary pairing that easily beats the Burroughs/Cobain collab a few years back, Acker and the Mekons meet to produce what must be a first, a soundtrack to a novel. Pussy, King of the Pirates is an aural companion to Acker's novel of the same name, a typically brutal journey into a wonderland of oblivion where the real and imagined intermingle freely, and horror and obscenity live side by side with childhood fantasy and adventure. Though the record might make a bit more sense if you've read the novel, the Mekons do an exceptional job of conjuring musically what Acker attempts in words. Acker's recitations of book excerpts introduce each of Pussy's seven songs, which echo the writer's disjointed and cacophonous collage style by mixing samples from pirate radio ("Ange's Song As She Crawled Through London"), dub reggae ("The Song of the Dogs"), lesbian pirate shanties ("Ostracism's Song to Pussycat"), industrial noise ("Into the Strange"), and disco synth-pop ("Antigone Speaking of Herself"). Acker brings out the Mekons' savage female side--with Jon Langford's vocals taking a back seat to Sally Timms's singing and Susie Honeyman's shrill fiddle--while the Mekons bring Acker's lyrics into a new, sensual realm without compromising the power of her naked words. --Roni Sarig

Whatever failings the Veils may end up being criticised for, a lack of ambition will not be among them. The Runaway Found is an arrestingly epic and assured debut, unmistakably like the work of a young band who instinctively understand that the only stakes worth playing for are the stars or bust. The Veils aspire, unashamedly, to the company of a peer group including the Verve, Radiohead, Coldplay and Muse: this is big, sweeping, serious music made by men who nigh certainly wear long black overcoats in the middle of summer. The good news is that the Veils appear to possess the ability to match their aspirations. The best tracks on The Runaway Found--the fragile, Smiths-like opener "The Wild Son" and the faintly Blue Nile-ish "Lavinia"--display a rare knack for melody and arrangement, and singer Finn Andrews has been blessed with an odd but startlingly expressive voice, approximately equal parts Jeff Buckley and Ian McCulloch. -- Andrew Mueller

Beck Hansen's sixth album again demonstrates his unparalleled ability to mix and match genres without overwhelming his essential style. Midnite Vultures is his peculiar tribute to the pre-hip hop American urban music of the Eighties, not a million miles from the peaks of that other wilful eccentric, Prince. "Sexxlaws" is a catchy melange including horns and down-home banjo picking, the inexplicable "Nicotine And Gravy" harks back to George Clinton's early P-funk, while the superlative "Milk And Honey" steals knowingly from Grandmaster Flash's "The Message", alongside electro beats and a huge rock chorus. Throw in pretty country ("Beautiful Way"), nasal G-funk ("Hollywood Freaks"), Tom Waits-style dissonance ("Out of Kontrol", where he asks "Did you ever let a cowboy sit on your lap?") and the relentless funk of "Mixed Business" and you have nothing less than another eclectic masterpiece. --Steve Jelbert

Bing Crosby is the father of the Christmas album. He sired the whole shooting match in 1942 when he recorded Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" for the Decca soundtrack of Holiday Inn, and the season has never been the same since. "White Christmas" isn't just Crosby's signature tune, it's also that of Christmas, selling millions around the world and inspiring countless recording artists to create their own holiday versions every year. This long overdue two-disc package features the original recording of "White Christmas" (often replaced by a later version on reissues) as well as all the seasonal songs Crosby cut over three decades. After the release of the cross-pollinating metal landmark Roots, Brazilian metal giants Sepultura acrimoniously splintered, with frontman Max Cavalera--thought by many to be the instigator of the primal rhythms that made Roots such a ferocious prospect--striking out bravely with his own project, Soulfly. Their eponymous debut picked up where Roots left off, debut single "Bleed" opening with a fearsome patter of drums, and then letting the floodgates burst open with a seldom-rivalled burst of speed-metal riffing. By no means was this Cavalera standing still, though-- Soulfly skips tempo with virtuostic ease, showing a loose affinity with the harshest grooves of crossover hip-hop/metal groups like Korn. The aforementioned "Bleed" features a spittle-flecked rap from Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst, and "First Commandment" invites Chino Moreno of the Deftones into the arena to duel it out with Cavalera. They're brave men--on Soulfly's evidence, few can match him on his own turf. --Louis Pattison

Continuing the impressive Misch Masch series, Anu Pillai of the much heralded Freeform Five, has put together an album that, coupled with a decent "All Back To Mine" compilation for desserts, could well soundtrack the best night out of your life, and the morning after. Consider the content of the mix itself - plenty of well known names and tunes rub shoulders with Funkadelic, Freeform Five tunes, and the monstrous "Release the Beast" by Breakwater shoehorned in for good effect. The vibe is electro-sleazy here; lots of burbling, bass-heavy beats and synths, but over a range of styles. Better still, the fun doesn't stop once Lindstrom's "I Feel Space" disappears into the ether; a second disc of remixes is thrown in. Elton John and Brian Wilson are remade for the 21st Century, while Mylo, N.E.R.D and Annie get reshaped appropriately. It may not match the first CD, but it's a tasty incentive. In some ways, however, it's superfluous- "Misch Masch" is the first serious contender for As Heard On Radio Soulwax crown of best 21st Century mix CD. --Thom Allott

Pure is presented as 16-year-old New Zealand singer Hayley Westenra's first album, though it follows a chart-topping eponymous debut and follow-up Christmas disc, My Gift to You. Pure is still Hayley's first UK release, and capitalises on a rapid move into the international limelight following a duet with Russell Watson as part of his 2002 tour, now preserved on DVD as Russell Watson: The Voice (Live In New Zealand). Comparisons with Charlotte Church are inevitable, yet Westenra has her own distinctive sound. She has impeccably clear diction coupled with a gorgeous voice with a very wide range: her high notes in the Kate Bush hit "Wuthering Heights" are especially striking, and like Bush she is also a dancer, having performed with the Royal New Zealand Ballet. If there's a problem, it's that Pure doesn't have a focus to match Westenra's talent, the tracks spanning everything from "Amazing Grace" to a Maori lullaby ("Hine e Hine") to hybrid pieces adapted from Ravel ("Never Say Goodbye") and Vivaldi's Four Seasons ("River of Dreams"). Ultimately what this set does demonstrate is that whatever direction Westenra finally settles on, she has the ability to go to the very top. For now she is a young artist finding her way, and for many listeners the result is Pure magic. --Gary S Dalkin

As they feature several ex-members of At the Gates, you'd expect the Haunted to deliver superior material. But One Kill Wonder, the follow-up to the excellent The Haunted Made Me Do It, is unexpectedly superb. Only 38 minutes in length, it's short but perfectly formed--there are no fillers. And it's not a simple, adrenalin-fuelled rush, either. Tracks blend into one another, piercing guitars meld beautifully with vocal shrieks, grand melodies dominate the awe-inspiring charge. The Haunted claim to be inspired by old-school thrashers like Testament, but their influences clearly stretch back further to more classically musical outfits like Rainbow and the Scorpions (though they eschew the vocal pyrotechnics of Dio and Klaus Meine). The eastern-tinged dual guitar assaults of "Shadow World" and "DOA" recall the Schenker brothers at their most brutal, while the super-dramatic instrumental "Demon Eyes" fades out with a medieval swing worthy of Ritchie Blackmore. Naturally, of course, One Kill Wonder is also righteously heavy. Few can match the intensity and power of "Urban Predator", "Downward Spiral" and "Bloodletting" and this--with all five members sharing songwriting duties and the same unshakeable firmness of intention--is surely thanks to a genuine group effort. It's quite brilliant. --Dominic Wills

Since first hooking up in the early 1990s, The X-Press 2 trio of DJs Rocky, Diesel & Ashley Beedle have been responsible for some of the biggest club hits of our times yet Muzikizum is their debut long-player. Both "Muzik X-Press" and "London X-Press" (released on the Junior Boys Own label) were two of the greatest house records of the 90s, while 2001's "AC/DC" and "Muzikizum" may yet be talked about in similar terms. It's this track history that makes their debut album so enticing for fans of quality house music. While it isn't the greatest-thing-since-sliced-bread opus we'd anticipated, it is certainly a very fine house album--and very fine house albums are notoriously hard to make. Wisely, the trio have chosen to supplement their greatest adrenaline-pumping moments--the New York meets Brighton prog-funk of "Muzikizum" and "Smoke Machine"--with a variety of deeper, techier and more uplifting cuts. So, we get the poppy "Call That Love" (featuring Basement Jaxx/Fila Brazillia vocalist Steve Edwards), the spacey "Angel" and the old skool piano rush of closer "The Ending". It's all solid, goodtime stuff, but there's little here to match the pop genius of David Byrne collaboration "Lazy" easily the album's stand-out moment. As a result, Muzikizum is merely a good album, rather than a great one.-- Matt Anniss

Celebrity is so cheap these days that it's almost impossible to imagine the sheer incandescence, high voltage glamour and the unique, brittle sophistication generated by Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence at the peak of their professional partnership. 1999 saw the centenary of Coward's birth and a huge revival of interest in his work, and prompted a New York transfer for this revised version of Sheridan Morley's successful two-hander, Noel and Gertie. Based on letters, anecdotes and of course, Coward's nostalgic songs, its sub-text is the story of a strong and powerful friendship forged in childhood and cut short only by Lawrence's early death. Coward was not given to public displays of sentiment, but in later years his acute grief was still palpable in many interviews. It would be too much to expect Harry Groener to match Coward's charisma, or Twiggy to reproduce Gertie's languorous elegance, but they are charming stand-ins. Twiggy, in particular, has an authentic 1930s warble. For all her other skills, Gertrude Lawrence was no great singer. The witty, occasionally acid, narrative adds real substance to the whole confection, making the abrupt conclusion ("I'll See You Again") all the more poignant. -- Piers Ford

Tokyo-born, LA-bred singer Nikka Costa's debut Everybody Got Their Something bulges with ambition. Her fiercely bootylicious first single, "Like a Feather"--that song with the thick, clapped 16th notes--has already garnered the 28-year-old singer one hell of a buzz, and for the most part, she's got the goods to back it up. It's a mixed bag of musical tricks that's equal parts 70s-style funk, hazy Led Zeppelin-inspired psychedelia, and angst-ridden alterna-chick yowling, with healthy dollops of soul, hip-hop, and thrash thrown in for good measure. Produced by Costa, Australian rocker Justin Stanley (who's also the singer's husband), and high-profile NYC DJ Mark Ronson, the album works best when it piles on the noise--like on the standout "Tug of War," which features the unmistakable rimshot work of Roots drummer ?uestlove. On that track, a flurry of scratched samples, layers of soundboard-smeared noise, and a few luscious string sweeps break into gospel-choir harmonies that swirl gorgeously beneath Costa's reedy mezzo-soprano wails. It's a shame that she can't match this intensity on sparser downtempo ballads like "Nothing" and "Just Because", where she sounds like Fiona Apple's slightly less annoying older sister. As the album's title says, everybody got their something, and Costa sounds best when she sticks to hers. --Sylvia W Chan

Doyle: Henry V Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]

Doyle: Henry V Original Soundtrack [SOUNDTRACK]

Composer Patrick Doyle's first film score accompanied Kenneth Branagh's first movie as director. For both, Henry V (1989) is a triumph. Branagh's vision of the play is a far darker, more realistic depiction than the morale-boosting patriotism of Laurence Olivier's 1945 classic. Doyle's score had to follow in the footsteps of William Walton, but undaunted the first-timer rose to the challenge magnificently. Briefed by the director to follow "Shakespeare's golden words" and be "as bold as possible", Doyle produced music of epic scope, lyrical passion and descriptive imagination. The score has a real flavour of opera--a trait that would become familiar in all of this composer's later work--as Doyle underscores the great speeches (notably the St Crispin's Day speech) with a tangible sense of drama, but one that is always sensitive to the nuances of the words. Set-pieces such as the death of Falstaff and the visceral Battle of Agincourt stand out, but the score entire feels operatically through-composed, unified by Doyle's strong instinct for melody. The melodramatic climax of his "Non nobis, Domine" (that's the composer singing at the beginning) unashamedly rivals "Land of Hope and Glory" for--as Branagh puts it--"hummability". Quite how they coaxed Sir Simon Rattle and the CBSO into the studio remains a mystery, but the result is one of the best performed, orchestrally luxurious soundtracks ever recorded. Patrick Doyle's later scores may be more refined (try Hamlet for example), but none quite match the sheer exuberance of this debut. -- Mark Walker

It's never easy following up a multi-platinum success, yet with The Long Road, Canada's Nickelback seem sure to match the sales of the many-million-selling Silver Side Up. The formula remains pretty much the same. Nothing fancy, just radio-friendly grunge-rock lending an appropriately dramatic backing to the powerful and increasingly confident voice of Chad Kroeger, the undoubted star of this show. Aside from the fast and punchy opener "Flat on the Floor", the tough, staccato "Because of You" and the Oasis-recalling "Figured You Out", the band deal exclusively in soft-rock anthems (soft, that is, by 2003's pulverising standards), the strong vocal melodies encouraging stadium sing-alongs. Indeed, the closing "See You at the Show" seems deliberately designed for crowd interaction. The only real change is in Kroeger's lyrical concerns. Where 2000's The State saw him suffering the frustrations and claustrophobic complexities of small town life, now he's tortured by a heavy touring schedule (the long road of the title, one presumes) that promotes destructive drug abuse and strains his attempted relationships to breaking point. That said, you can't help feeling the ruthlessly analytical Kroeger would turn a visit to the supermarket into a riot of hatred and self-recrimination. That these two furnace-tonsilled brothers from Leith, Scotland remain almost uniquely celebrated for a pair of songs from the tail end of the 80s is, on one hand, a tribute to the undimmed magnificence of said songs--"I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" especially verges on national anthem status, still holding court everywhere from wedding discos, student radio, Match of the Day backdrops and drunken sing-alongs home from the pub. But on the other that simply disregards the sturdy trunk of work they've built up since. A revitalised Proclaimers have in recent years been creeping up on festival crowds hanging about waiting for the hits, and unexpectedly enthralling them with hand-chiselled choruses and wild, windswept gusto--seventh album Life with You is accordingly the perfect accompaniment to more familiar distractions. Throughout 13 muscular tracks they strike Motown, folk, blues and rock `n' roll sparks into heartfelt, melodic pop blazes bellowed by that deliciously thick Scottish brogue. "Here It Comes Again" is a frenzied highlight, bouncing off the walls like a yo-yoing Joe Cocker cameo in The Commitments, and "In Recognition" and "Whole Wide World" are true anthems both, building from that familiar muted acoustic foundation, the former illustrating the clawing wit that sometimes pervades their writing and the latter an adorable chest-beating love song. The Proclaimers are very much still walking. --James Berry
