Chrisette Michele I AmSe flere produkter fra AmazonIf you didn't get to know Chrisette Michele by way of Jay-Z (she was the one singing sparkling hooks on "Lost Ones") or Nas (she channeled Billie Holiday on "Can't Forget About You"), stop wasting valuable seconds. Though the hype on this pure-voiced, raunch-resistant songstress has her resuscitating a classic jazz sound that rarely infiltrates R&B--comparisons to Lady Day, Nina Simone, and Ella Fitzgerald are mounting--she's more her generation's answer to Erykah Badu: any notes she wraps her lips around come out fresh-sounding, and she adds to the effect with a built-in elegance that's irresistible to R&B and non-R&B fans alike. Hip-hoppers get a custom dose of Michele's magic on "Be O.K.," featuring the flabbergastingly prolific yet still likable Will.i.am, jazz sentimentalists will instantly succumb to "Like a Dream", and anybody with ears on his or her head will warm to the slinky slow jam that is "If I Have My Way". Michele's is a rare talent; count on this outstanding debut propelling her to stratospheric heights. --Tammy La Gorce Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack Exit WoundsSe flere produkter fra AmazonThere's no shortage of anger on Exit Wounds. Even when the backdrop suggests a lazy dance-out, the war of the words comes screeching forth. Outsiderz 4 Life lay down a placid rhythm track and then expletives fly. Lady Luck featuring Redman quote the Beastie Boys' "Hey Ladies" and turn it on its head with a 150-mile-per-hour rap. The album's real star, however, is obviously Yonkers-bred DMX, who leads off the album with an attack on Bill Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine" with expected ferocity and is featured with Big Stan on the Casio-keyboard-stuttering drive of "Walk with Me." Previous DMX collaborators, the Lox, shade things ominously for the noir-ish "Bust Your Gun." Queensbridge housing project's finest Nas keeps it raw with the appropriately titled "Gangsta Tears." Only Playa, hidden deep in the middle--sandwiched between Mack 10 and the truly beat-spastic Drag On--offer a conciliatory track with the romantically tinged "Incense Burning." It's so out of place, the effect is comical. How did these smoothies sneak past these gangstas, huh? -- Rob O'Connor Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists 8 Mile (Regular explicit)Se flere produkter fra AmazonExactly how Eminem was able to assemble so many credible emcees of today and yesteryear (Jay-Z, Rakim) to endorse his Holly'hood coming-out party, 8 Mile, is anyone's guess. What is clear, however, is that (dare we say it) the Shady One might be growing up. On "Lose Yourself" Em abandons his callous, hardcore posturing to write thoughtful hood-centric coming-of-age lyrics that would make Melle Mel proud. On "Battle" Gang Starr's Guru tears through a sick beat from rap's most prolific producer DJ Premier. Sadly, Nas wastes more valuable studio time dissing Jay-Z (ho-hum) on "You Wanna Be Me". Interestingly, once you get past the living-legend love-in and peep the skills from Em's lesser-known Shady Records roster of below-ground wordsmiths--50 Cent ("Wanksta") or Obie Trice ("Adrenaline Rush"), you might urge Em to consider giving up his thespian pursuits to become a full-time record executive. Not even the baffling inclusion of Macy Gray's humdrum "Time of Your Life" can sink this project. --Dalton Higgins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Mobb Deep The InfamousSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's hard to believe that the second Mobb Deep album was created by teenagers, but the fact remains that this 14-track masterpiece puts many of the duo's older rivals to shame. With a grim, cinematic feel, underpinned by sparse snare beats and ominous bass rumbles, their raps give a depressing, but poetic account of life in the crime-ridden housing projects of Queensbridge. The quality of guests they attracted (Q-Tip,Nas, Raekwon) is a measure of the respect the pair commanded on the strength of their only hit single that year, "Shook Ones Pt II". That track, with its catchy bassline and hummable guitar sample, shows Mobb Deep at their sinister best, delivering lines like "I'm only 19, but my mind is old / When things get for real my warm heart turns cold"--lyrics that go far beyond crude gangsterism, and provide an irresistibly chilling thug's-eye view of the world. --Chris Elwell-Sutton Fragt: Ukendt! |

50 Cent The Massacre [CD + DVD]Se flere produkter fra AmazonTwo years on from his pledge to get rich or die trying, New York's Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson is turning his guns on the opposition. Barely ten seconds into The Massacre, the first innocent - a young woman opening her Valentine's present, no less - is dispatched in a hail of gunfire, and from there on in, the carnage seldom lets up. "Piggy Bank" sees him tossing insults at Jadakiss, Ja Rule, Nas, Fat Joe, and Kelis in the verses, and counting his big piles of money in the chorus, while "Gatman and Robbin" - featuring vocals and production from Eminem - paints the pair as gun-toting supergangstas with bulletproof vests and an all-for-one-and-one-for-all attitude to beef. And when there's not violence, there is sex. The single, "Candy Shop", debuts new G-Unit singer Olivia, who gives 50 the opportunity to test out some of his best double entendres: "I'll melt in your mouth, girl, not in your hand." There's not a track here with the cross-over capacity of "In Da Club", and at 21 tracks long, it would be disingenuous to claim The Massacre is wholly without filler. But the beats are tight, and 50's still got one of the most confident styles in the game: it would be absurd to suggest The Massacre was going to be anything other than huge. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Noreaga NoreSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhile his solo debut, N.O.R.E., lacks the sheer fatalism of his Queens, New York, peers Nas and Mobb Deep, Noreaga is unrepentant in his thugged-out exultation of fast money, fast love and fast life. Because of his penchant for penning confusing tales that tend toward the cryptic (see the title track), Noreaga might appeal only to an audience eager to listen to stories of project life--just so long as they don't have to live it for themselves. Mostly mediocre production also weakens the album. It's only on two tracks, "Mathematics (Esta Loca)" and "Body in the Trunk", that we glimpse the potential for Noreaga's gifts. -- Oliver Wang Fragt: Ukendt! |

Jay-Z American Gangster: Parental AdvisorySe flere produkter fra AmazonConceived as an unofficial soundtrack to the Ridley Scott movie of the same name, American Gangster sees us getting reacquainted with a quite different Jay-Z to the mainstream-courting comeback kid that hooked up with Beyonce and Coldplay's Chris Martin on 2006's Kingdom Come. This, Jay-Z's second post-retirement album, is hip-hop to the bone: a record steeped in the sounds, iconography and soul of the New York underworld, with the lion's share of production handled by P Diddy's in-house team The Hitmen and guest spots from Beanie Sigel ("Ignorant Shit"), Lil Wayne (the crunk-like, Beastie Boys-sampling "Hello Brooklyn") and long-time rival Nas. The Nas track, "Success", is a particular winner, the pair burying the hatchet over a gorgonzola-scented organ break, rejecting the trappings of success with a truly lordly arrogance: "How many times can I go to Mr Chow's/Tao's, Nobu - hold up!/Let me move my bowels". Other highlights come with the Neptunes-produced "Blue Magic" and slick dealer's anthem "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)", and while you feel American Gangster is something of a stasis for Jay-Z, an album that sees him revisiting those well-worn themes of hustling and shotting, it remains a treat to hear him on the mic. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Cormega The True Meaning [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonIn an era of celebrity rappers and prefabricated beef, Cory McKay (aka Nas) speaks much needed truth. Picking up where his long-awaited debut The Realness left off, 'Mega's latest set of rhymes address the type of reality most MCs only pretend to live and don't necessarily even understand. Songs such as "Live Ya Life" and "Soul Food" deal with the specifics of street life, while "Verbal Graffiti" and "Take These Jewels" focus on Cormega's evolution as an artist and a man. For those who like public drama, the appearance of Illmatic and Stillmatic producer Large Professor on "The Come Up" adds validation to "Love in Love Out", 'Mega's quiet yet firm rebuttal to the heated name-calling of Nas's "Destroy and Rebuild". Listen to The True Meaning and you'll be able to grasp how Cormega's street credibility has enabled him to sell 100,000 records without any major radio airplay or having a video in heavy rotation. Outrunning the clichés, Cormega's a genuine thug poet, and The True Meaning is an album worth owning. -- Rebecca Levine Fragt: Ukendt! |

Princess Superstar The Last of the Great 20th Century ComposersSe flere produkter fra AmazonTo paraphrase Nas, this could only really come from a New York State of Mind. Encompassing everything from the Beastie Boys, Armand Van Helden, Blondie and Beck, Princess Superstar (a.k.a. Concetta Kirshner) has an original musical concept that could only have come straight out of that ultimate nexus of lo-fi, hip-hop, shock-rock pop culture--the CD even comes complete with 1980s-style Atari-type video games. Ms Superstar can't really sing and certainly can't rap, but then nor could George Clinton and--like Mr Funkadelic--she gets around these minor obstacles with humour and invention. Rock and rap and damn near everything else are thrown together on Last Of The Great 20th Century Composers in a sort of East Village jambalaya, one minute performance thrash art, the next lounge lizard breakbeats. Though lauded as a hip-hop artist, only "Come Up To my Room" qualifies as a straight up rap track. Just as Clinton did, she's got people on board who can do all the things she can't. Prince Paul, Kool Keith, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Jon Forte all contribute, inputting rhymes and production that give substance to her maniacal drive to be somebody. Last Of ... contains a lot of style over image, reminiscent of Madonna picking off the best bits of sub-culture and using them to offend the easily offended. Sex is used as a shock factor ("NYC C**T") and Ms Superstar is not unaware that she looks as if she's come straight from the cover of Vogue. This is not to devalue her talent; she cleverly acknowledges her assets, using irony as a defence against her abilities while at the same time maximising them in one huge post-modern joke. -- Jake Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |

R. Kelly R. KellySe flere produkter fra AmazonA double disc may seem indulgent after barely a decade in the biz, but after meandering through the commercial minefields of innocent fun (1992's Born into the '90s), pure raunch (1993's 12 Play), and pop crossover (1995's R. Kelly), Kelly has come close to the perfect mix--and if it takes two discs to do so, why not? There are still moments of indulgence (the forced theatrics of "The Opera"), and the occasional venture into mediocrity ("Did You Ever Think?"), but the sheer funk of tracks like "Home Alone" (a head-bobber featuring Keith Murray) and "Dollar Bill" (featuring--surprise!--Foxy Brown) allows you to overlook such cracks in the formula. Other bit players in this star vehicle include Cam'Ron, Noreaga, Jay-Z, Nas, and (yes) Celine Dion. --Rebecca Wallwork Fragt: Ukendt! |

Diplomats Cam'Ron Presents The Diplomats - Diplomatic ImmunitySe flere produkter fra AmazonLayering raw rhymes over street beats that frequently incorporate speeded-up and dragged-out R&B samples (courtesy of the Heatmakerz), Diplomatic Immunity extends the massive heat generated by Killa Cam's platinum Come Home with Me. Some tracks on this double CD should have been relegated to the "filler" pile (the perfunctory "Hey Ma" remix, for example) but the songs that work spit fire. Diplomatic Immunity is laden with imagery of uptown drug-game drama (the Bone Thugs-inspired "The First") and downtown terrorist destruction ("I Love You")--painting post-9/11 New York in appropriately sombre colours--but love of home and family is the top-level vibe. Thanks to Cam'ron Giles and his Dip Set crew, Harlem gains a major foothold in the East Coast battle of the boroughs sparked by Jay-Z and Nas. Harlem should be proud. -- Rebecca Levine Fragt: Ukendt! |

Alicia Keys The Diary of Alicia KeysSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhereas Alicia Keys's debut was in essence a musical overview that recorded snapshots of her life over the five years it took to complete, her follow up, The Diary Of, is the scribbled footnotes of the very busy two years since. She's certainly kept tabs on what's been going on--the old-skool R&B influences so evident on her debut have become overshadowed by the kind of people she previously stood apart from. Witness "Karma"; with its harsh beats, undulating background string section and funky, slightly dirty groove, it could easily be a Justin Timberlake song, as could the Timberland-produced "Heartburn". She plays it safe on "If I Ain't Got You" and "Diary" though, and there is still much to enjoy that can directly be attributed to her oft-mentioned classical training and childhood influences. It's also easy to forget what an amazing voice she has, best demonstrated here on "If I Was Your Woman". And for all her fancy ivory work, remember that it was the simplicity of "Falling's" descending piano line that sent her career into the ionosphere. There is nothing like that here, just the painful noise of Nas and Rankin contributing to "Streets Of New York". The Diary Of is neither one thing nor the other. A curious mix of slick modern R&B tinged with influences from the past (often sampled ones) and her own more traditionally arranged soul. If she'd put all her energy into completely modernising her sound then she could easily rival Beyoncé. Instead she's imitated the past and copied the present--if she'd looked to the future then perhaps her true talent could have been fully realised. -- Cortman Virtue Fragt: Ukendt! |

Macy Gray BigSe flere produkter fra AmazonFor a while there, the helium-voiced Macy Gray seemed to be coasting instead of crashing down the walls between funk, rock, and R&B the way scads of breathless music pundits once said she would. That was before will.i.am and a handful of other skillful knob-twisters entered her life. Now, multi-genre destruction and utter domination once again seem possible: Big, as its title suggests, is a huge record--bold in all the right places and subdued where it needs to be; scruffy around the edges but slick below the surface; at once nonchalant and reckless to the bone. Gray, in her way, is a vocal Timbaland--it's tempting to think she's too imposing to make a random-seeming hook-up work, but she stretches her singular gift around pretty much any collaborator a producer can throw at her, and with style to burn. On Big, those tossed on for the challenge include Natalie Cole, who lights up opener "Finally Made Me Happy"; Nas, who gives up the grit likably on "Ghetto Love"; and Fergie, who coos efficiently throughout "Glad You're Here." As vibes go, the one given off here is cool, casual, and slightly crazy--all Macy, in other words. She does her thing up right, and she does it Big. --Tammy La Gorce Fragt: Ukendt! |

Ludacris The Red Light District: Parental AdvisorySe flere produkter fra AmazonThink what you want about Ludacris, but no one can deny that he is hip-hop's king of choruses. Luda's hooks are big, brassy, and loud; they're tailor-made for club crowds and radio programmers. Some songs, like "Get Back," practically sound like one long hook, every line a potential anthem. At times, it's easy to forget that Ludacris knows how to rhyme too. His taffy-pull verbal style isn't as lyrically intricate as Nas's (who appears on "Virgo") and can't match Trick Daddy's thuggish bravado ("Hopeless"), but few other rappers exude his level of charisma. On "Number One Spot," Luda acts like he's strong-arming his way to the top, but it's really charm that propels the charge. Even on a song like "Two Miles an Hour," dedicated to "those who spend more on their car than their relationship," he's more clever than clownish in selling the concept. Red Light District has its share of filler, but, track for track, Ludacris still delivers satisfaction. --Oliver Wang Fragt: Ukendt! |

Makaveli The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day TheorySe flere produkter fra AmazonWhile in prison, Tupac Shakur studied the works of Makaveli, and used it as an alias for The Don Killuminati, which amounts to little more than a call to war. The 7 Day Theory, released less than two months after his death, is a slightly grisly listen. From the distinctly uneasy experience of 2Pac cussing Notorious B.I.G, Jay-Z and Nas on the intro, you are then faced with the prospect of listening to a very macabre album. Caught in the middle of the petty arguments that directly contributed to his death in 1996, 2Pac uses a mixture of conspiracy theory and threats to get his message across, there is little evidence of the persuasive charm and sheer personality you'll find on his other albums, particularly All Eyez On Me and debut 2pacalypse Now. It's not without some fine moments, "To Live" and "Die In L.A", recall some of his best work but overall this is the sound of a man who's not having fun any more. -- Chris Blenkarn Fragt: Ukendt! |

Scarface The FixSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhat the world needs now is The Fix--a brilliant hip-hop album with the soul of a blues record. Dirty South iconoclast Scarface has never been afraid to get deep; at this point a lot of his young-man wildness has been replaced by a mature understanding of life's cyclical nature. Lyrically complex and leaning heavily on sombre chords, acoustic guitars and scratchy soul samples, The Fix is not a light and bouncy throwaway album, but one that demands repeated listening. Nonetheless, this is also no crossover attempt--all you get is superior hip-hop, accented with a touch of R&B vocals courtesy of Kelly Price, Faith Evans and Tanya Herron. Standout tracks include "In Between Us", featuring an impassioned star turn by guest MC Nas (Nasir Jones), the Kanye West-produced "In Cold Blood", and the gangsta lean "Sellout". But there's no question that "On My Block", an instant classic, is hands down the best cut. -- Rebecca Levine Fragt: Ukendt! |
