Batman Vengeance (Gamecube)Se flere produkter fra AmazonThere must have been more lame Batman games created in the last decade then there are tights-wearing felons in Gotham City, but thankfully Batman: Vengeance hits the Bat-target with the proverbial golden Batarang. Because the game is based on The New Batman Adventures (a version of the animated Batman series which has never been seen in the UK--except as a part of The Batman And Superman Movie), the visuals are 3-D versions of the cartoon's very stylised designs. This can sometimes cause the backdrops to be rather lacking in detail but generally it's an interesting and unusual look. The gameplay is perhaps most similar to a more focused version of Soul Reaver, with plenty of Batgadgets to play with, and even a little bit of Metal Gear-esque sneaking around required. There's also an excellent 3-D combat system and a bunch of driving and puzzle sub-games of varying quality. A few obvious niggles do manage to get under your tights, such as the oversensitive controls, the intrusive loading times and the often frustratingly obscure level designs, but the joy of being Batman and flinging exploding gas balls at everyone manages to overcome them. In the video-games world Spider-Man still rules the superhero roost, but this is easily the best Batgame yet seen.-- David Jenkins (This review refers to the PS2 version of this game.) Minority Report (GameCube)Se flere produkter fra AmazonIn Minority Report you play as John Anderton, an officer in the elite Pre-crime unit responsible for apprehending would-be murderers before they can commit the deed. Given these parameters, it's not surprising that not a lot of characters die in this game--but there's still plenty of violence. Anderton himself is quite adept at pummelling other officers, guards, robots or anyone else who gets in his way. With a decent selection of kicks, punches and combinations (you can purchase additional combos when you collect enough dollar signs), Anderton can beat his way through at least the beginning levels. Unfortunately, you are unlikely to find much to enjoy in Minority Report, even if you liked the film. The elements that made the movie worthwhile--a compelling narrative wrapped up with a high-tech, futuristic bow--are glossed over or absent from the game. What's more, the gameplay is as redundant and simplistic as the graphics are uneven. Worse yet, the game does not allow you to save mid-level (some levels are long), and the instruction manual contains no information about how to play the game, forcing you to play through the training course. Minority Report does successfully represent some parts of the movie, such as the concussion gun, the jet pack and the spider bots. The first time you fire the concussion gun, for example, you'll be impressed with the way the space around Anderton ripples with the force of the weapon. Otherwise, the game levels are unimpressive and character animation is poor. NHL 2003 (GameCube)Se flere produkter fra AmazonBeing huge hockey fans we were excited about playing the latest in the long line of EA's NHL series--but we must admit to being a little disappointed with this latest offering, as NHL 2003 in all truth is NHL 2002 plus a few shiny bits. The new features for 2003 are an improved franchise mode which has more of the hardcore managerial events to deal with, such as annual drafts, player waivers, more injuries and suspensions, and more Easter eggs and celebrations to unlock with the NHL cards rewards system. One major gameplay change has been added: the "Gamebreaker" is simply a power bar which slowly energizes as you play, and once full a quick button press will allow you to pull off some pretty funky moves. Also improved is the in-game physics--the puck now rebounds off defenders and sticks with more realism. Our main criticisms (and perhaps this is nit-picking) is that the overly comic commentators have really dumbed the game down, and that there are to! o many Matrix-style slow-motion effects. NHL 2003 plays fantastically and is one of the finest sports games to grace TV screens anywhere; the presentation is top notch and most of the stats are up-to-date (although yet again many of the minor international squads still have imaginary players). But the new tweaks aren't really enough to justify shelling out full price if you already own last year's version--a lesson we hoped EA had learnt after finally getting FIFA right this time. If you're a NHL completist or a hockey fan, or have never played NHL before, then we recommend this game over any other. Monster House (GameCube)Se flere produkter fra AmazonIn a nutshell: You?ve seen the movie (or at least your kids have) now play the game as yet another computer animated film gets turned into a third person action game, this time with relatively pleasing consequences. The lowdown: There?s hardly any action or kids film nowadays that would dare to strut the word stage without an attendant video game, no matter whether the movie is suited to the treatment or not. Luckily Monster House is as you control CGI youngsters DJ, Chowder, and Jenny in their attempts to escape the titular Monster House with naught but their wits and a squirt gun. The game both looks and sounds just like the movie as you battle rooms full of possessed furniture. The only problem with this is that it means you end up fighting the same bad guys again and again, with only the end of level bosses offering any real variety. Still, the game?s short enough for this to be a relatively minor problem and fans of the film are unlikely to be too disappointed. Most exciting moment: Each of the three different children gets to use a different kind of squirt gun: DJ can use his like a house, Chowder?s works like a shotgun and Jenny?s is quick fire and good over long distances. Since you ask: The movie is the second film, after The Polar Express, to use a new motion capture process called performance capture. The video game uses some of the same data for the animation of the characters as the movie does. The bottom line: Not the greatest game ever but one of the better movie tie-ins.
