World Snooker Championship 2007 (PS3)Se flere produkter fra AmazonAlthough it's hard to make snooker seem terribly sexy (Sega try their best by making everyone on the box cover scowl like they're in a Steven Segal movie) the fact is it has an enormous fan base and it actually works really well as a video game. As with any yearly update this isn't massively different to the last game in the series: it features plenty of celebrity snooker players, (rubbish) commentary from John Parrot and John Virgo, plenty of game modes and online play on the Xbox. Although there is a tutorial mode, the game is intuitive enough for you to pick and play from the off, especially if you start the career mode and begin to slowly work your way up the ranks with your own custom character. The biggest challenge in the game though is having the will power to turn off all the control assists which initially help to make the game so easy to play. A new cue ball position zone marker makes things a lot easier than previous games, as does helpful aiming arrows indicating when and how hard you should hit a ball. Lining up shots still isn't quite as easy as it should be though and altering the strength of the shot on the right analogue stick also feels less accurate than it should do. There are a few bugs and glitches too, particularly around foul balls. Graphically the game won't win any awards, with poor animation and zombie like players, but that's really not what the game is about. Red Dead Revolver (Xbox)Se flere produkter fra AmazonIt's an absolute crime that there hasn't been more Wild West-themed video games over the years, but Red Dead Revolver redresses this balance almost instantly with a gloriously authentic spaghetti western feel that'll make the next clichéd fantasy or SF setting you come across even harder to bear. Red Dead Revolver has had an unusual history, starting life as an update of Capcom's old Gun Smoke arcade game before being canned. So confident were the developer's of the game's worth though that they convinced Grand Theft Auto publishers Rockstar to buy up the rights and allow them to finish their work. And thank goodness they did, for not only does the game entirely legitimise the Wild West as a viable setting for a video game, but it's one of the most entertaining arcade shooters of recent years. The controls are just complex enough to allow depth, without becoming fiddly, and allow you to use cover appropriately, and fight hand to hand and with a huge range of different weapons. The best bit though is the bullet time-esque "Dead Eye" mode which allows you to select multiple targets in slow motion and then switch back to normal time and blast everyone away instantly, just like Clint Eastwood. With sections on horseback, a number of missions (perhaps too many) where you control a side character instead of the eponymous Red, and tons of references to classic movie moments this has just about everything you could ask for from a cowboy shooter. -- David Jenkins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Gran Turismo 3: A -Spec (PS2)Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe most eagerly awaited PlayStation 2 game of 2001 is finally here. It's about motor racing, it's called Gran Turismo 3: A Spec, and it's utterly superb. Much has been made of the appearance of Sony's flagship title on the PS2. Detractors have complained it has fewer cars than GT2, it only has a couple of extra tracks and it's really no more than an update. But then it's easy to knock it before you've tried it. To be fair the detractors have a point and for the seriously hardcore driving fan "only" 183 possible vehicles might be a bit of an issue, but to the vast majority of racing gamers GT3 will be a fabulous gaming experience and will really prove what the PlayStation 2 is capable of. In essence, GT3 is a series of sub-games combined by a motoring theme. There are driving licences to gain which open access to racing events, which in turn provide cash to buy bigger and better motors. There's a full arcade section in which it's possible to choose from a pre-determined selection of cars and tracks on time trials, first-past-the-post and free-run races and there's a huge section of game time devoted to tuning and maintaining your garage of racing machines. Graphically, this is the best-looking PS2 title yet. It's crisp, smooth, frighteningly quick and there's no invisible scenery in evidence. Lighting effects are truly awesome--wait 'til you see the setting sun of Laguna Seca--and the engine sounds are ear-burstingly impressive. Control is smooth and precise; the DualShock controller is used to good effect but playing with a suitable steering wheel adds a whole new dimension to things. A number of top-name bands have their musical wares shoehorned into the soundtrack so expect the company of Ash, Feeder and others to keep you company during the long hours of gawping at the TV. Playing GT3, you get the feeling that the PS2 is finally starting to show its worth. This is professional games software of the highest quality. Buy it now. Pursuit Force (PSP)Se flere produkter fra AmazonOf all the new games set to be released for the PSP, Pursuit Force looks to be the most exciting. Older gamers may find the concept reminiscent of 80s coin-op racer Chase H.Q., which is certainly a game long overdue an update. If you haven't heard of Chase H.Q. don't worry - as this is a pretty easy game to understand. Cast as a police officer in the Pursuit Force it's your job to arrest an almost unending stream of automobile equipped bad guys. And by arrest the game actually means run off the road, blow up or, in the game's signature move, jump onto a moving vehicle, turf out the driver and steal their ride. It's like an even more explosive version of Burnout but with guns and a wider range of transport. The game is simple dumb fun, but the mix of driving and violence has rarely been combined so well. No doubt aware that the whole thing cold get a bit samey, there are plenty of different vehicles and weapons -- including the chance to pilot a police helicopter at various points in the game, complete with a highly destructive mini-gun accessory. With some really stunning graphics and a great sense of speed this may be yet another driving game for the PSP, but there's far more to it than simply getting a better lap time, which may ultimately make it the best of the bunch. -- Harrison Dent Fragt: Ukendt! |
