Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (PS2)Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe Spyro games on the PSone are remembered by many as some of the console's best 3-D platform games, and quite rightly so. In Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly, his first next-generation adventure, the world's smallest, friendliest, purple-est dragon is back to jump, glide and start brush fires, and the new game starts off well as you watch the dastardly Ripto accidentally disperse the magic dragonflies across the gameworld and force you, as Spyro, to bring them all back to safety. One of the best things about Enter the Dragonfly is the huge number of moves at Spyro's disposal. As you'd expect of any dragon he can jump, fly, hover, head-butt and breathe flames--but now he can also breathe ice and electricity as well as magic bubbles (very handy for catching dragonflies, and a clever nod to arcade classic Bubble Bobble). Unfortunately the main problem with the game is the graphics, which, although they look okay in the screenshots, are very jerky when you play the game. The level design isn't terribly imaginative either and the game as a whole is surprisingly short. Since Enter the Dragonfly isn't made by the same team as the previous Spyro games--those guys went on to make the excellent Ratchet & Clank instead--it's perhaps no surprise that it isn't quite up to its predecessors. Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter (PS2)Se flere produkter fra AmazonEnter a world of treachery, revenge, really big guns and even bigger spaceships as you take on the role of Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter in this decent new shoot-'em-up adventure. Although at first sight it appears to be just another sci-fi first-person shooter, Mace Griffin soon reveals itself to have rather more ambition than that. Although it's mission based, the structure of the game is such that you can tackle things however you want, not just choosing between a stealthily or more gung-ho approach but opting to pop into your spaceship at any point for a bit of dogfighting or to access a different part of the level. Controlling your ship is extremely easy and the whole space combat simulator aspect of the game is very well designed and doesn't seem at all like a tacked-on mini-game. Further innovation is evident in the nature of your missions--you're not just an assassin but have to act as everything from bodyguard to computer hacker as you pay the bills with collected bounties and at the same time try to find out who betrayed you at the beginning of the game and forced you to spend 10 years in the clink. The graphics are more than up to the job of making such a complex game look and feel realistic, especially as there are no loading delays and the transition into and out of your spaceship is seamless. The audio is pretty good too, especially as rock bad-boy Henry Rollins is voicing the eponymous anti-hero. So if you want to try a shooter with a bit of a difference keep your eye out for Mace Griffin. -- David Jenkins Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (Xbox)Se flere produkter fra AmazonAs far as can be ascertained from its response in America, the movie of The Chronicles of Riddick is a bit of a turkey which is rather odd, because the game is actually really good. Although essentially a first person shoot `em-up, the game makes a very spirited attempt to add some deeper role-playing elements to the concept so that you spend a decent amount of your time just talking to people and performing sub-quests. The game is actually a prequel to the film Pitch Black, which means that Riddick is still a highly unpleasant serial killer and there's none of the naff, sub-Dune style mumbo jumbo from the newer movie. The only problem with this is that pretty much the whole game is set in an extremely murky and often rather monotonous looking prison. Monotonous in the most attractive way possible though, as this is certainly the most graphically impressive Xbox game yet seen. The use of light and shade is superb and the models for the all the characters and monsters are some of the best ever seen in a video game. Perhaps the biggest surprise though is that the now ubiquitous stealth sections are actually the best bit, with Riddick's showpiece ability to see in the dark implemented extremely well. This more than makes up for the odd dull sub-quest, and the relative lack of gunplay, and adds further variety to what is easily one of the Xbox's best games yet. -- David Jenkins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon (PC)Se flere produkter fra AmazonJust like flares, cockroaches and Tony Blackburn, some things never die; this third entry in the Broken Sword series hopefully means the good old graphic adventure is making a comeback. It was created by Sierra and perfected by LucasArts but unfortunately UK developer Revolution is the only company still making them like they used to--although this all-new title features direct controls, instead of point and click, and even Shenmue-style Quick Time Events. The plot in The Sleeping Dragon revolves around yet another ancient threat to the world, this time related to the mysterious (and real) Voynich Manuscript, which may or may not contain the secret to eternal life. Needless to say it's up to the game's hero George Stobbart and his long-term associate Nico to stop the bad guys from prevailing, and this they do by solving a long stream of logic puzzles ranging from getting into a locked room armed with only a press card to waking up an unconscious Australian before he falls off the side of a cliff. Even though the game is not controlled with the mouse the interface is extremely easy to use, with four main context-sensitive buttons used in conjunction with your inventory. It won't be to everyone's taste--those with a taste for arcade action may get bored quite quickly--but it all works well and has excellent graphics. Ground Control 2: Operation Exodus(PC)Se flere produkter fra AmazonWith a bit of luck Ground Control II represents a return to form for the real-time strategy genre, after it tragically burned itself out after an all too short stint as the world's most popular game genre. Like many a celebrity before it the games became bloated by its own success and so complicated that only hardcore fans could actually be bothered to play them and although Ground Control II does little that is new it does at least do it in a way that normal people can understand and enjoy. The first thing the game does to make itself more accessible to the average gamer is get rid of all that boring resource management business. Here everything is about controlling troops and getting stuck into as many sci-fi battles as you can, not worrying about whether your peons are mining enough gold. New units are assigned as you gain "acquisition points" during a mission and are then brought directly to the battlefield on huge dropships, again making sure you can concentrate on making war instead of faffing around with factories. Because of the emphasis on combat you have a lot more control over your troops than usual, with the ability to switch formations and use cover and elevation to improve your position. Apart from improved graphics there's virtually nothing here that that hasn't been seen before, including in the original Ground Control, but the focus on user friendly controls and straight combat means that it should appeal to a significantly wider audience. -- David Jenkins Fragt: Ukendt! |
