The Man From U.N.C.L.E. [1965]Se flere produkter fra AmazonFans of The Man From U.N.C.L.E. felt doubly blessed in 1965. Not only did its second series debut in colour, but there was also the first of several spin-off movies. The Spy with My Face thrilled audiences with "The August Affair", a plot to replace Napoleon Solo (Robert Vaughn) with a look-alike. The movie's only disappointment in this golden year for the show was the inexplicable absence of its catchy theme tune. By the third series the show had strayed too far into the campness of Batman, which also started in 1966. One Spy Too Many demonstrated the rush to cash-in on success before the bubble burst. This second theatrical release actually consists of two TV episodes, and played on US small screens first. This then became the pattern for the later movies, although what played where on international TV in episodic fashion becomes extremely complicated. The Karate Killers features Joan Crawford, Herbert Lom and Telly Savalas in a search for a secret formula (from Series 3). The Helicopter Spies pits Solo and Kuryakin (David McCallum) against two criminal masterminds (culled from Series 4). How to Steal the World is very much a finale, in that it comes from the very last episode. It rather shows, too, with only Leslie Nielsen looking serious about his art. It's no top secret that The Man from U.N.C.L.E.'s finest hours came early; the same certainly goes for these movies. Nevertheless, the gadgets are always great, the girls easy on the eye and the two leads superb in their chemistry together. On the DVD: The Man From U.N.C.L.E. has survived pretty well for its DVD incarnation. Although there's some grain and artefacts evident in the print, colours are bright and the image is generally sharp. Some work has gone into providing fun fan material, but unfortunately it's all via DVD-ROM and in PDF format. N*E*R*D In Search Of...Se flere produkter fra AmazonIf at first you don't succeed...rerecord it! This is certainly what Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo aka N*E*R*D, aka famous production duo the Neptunes, have done with In Search Of.... This is a slightly reworked version of the duo's debut album released last year to limited acclaim. In fact this is more of a director's cut with the unfunny between track jokes taken out and the original funk, soul and hip-hop boosted by more live instrumentation. N*E*R*D have made their album more "neo-soul" putting In Search Of... in line with the slick, retro style of D'Angelo, Angie Stone and Jill Scott. It's a wise move. Their trademark sound of loud drum machines and minimal samples was wearing thin, even though it had propelled the likes of Kelis, Jay Z and Mystikal to platinum-style greatness. "Am I High" goes from a chilled groove into a piece of elasticated funk, "Baby Doll" is now a piece of kinky reggae and "Rock Star" is funked up with extra guitars and drums. There's more emphasis on musicianship and less on power. But it's not a complete success. In truth N*E*R*D have been allowed to go back and tinker with their work when less stellar groups would never have been afforded the chance. "Truth or Dare" is now overloaded with strings, synths and every other trick in the studio. Thankfully they haven't messed with "Provider", the album's best song and a soulful, Marvin Gaye-like paean to the moral quandaries of drug dealing. In Search Of... remains a good experimental hip-hop soul album. Version 2 just wins by a head by dint of being a fuller album, though the millions addicted to the raw Neptunes sound will always prefer the first.-- Jake Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |

Never, Never, Land is no exception. Soon after the release of 1999's Psyence Fiction, beats wizard DJ Shadow announced he'd never work as a member of UNKLE again--and accordingly, the first thing you notice about Never, Never, Land is the absence of his robust percussion. But once over that minor disappointment, it's not hard to wallow in this record's impressively dark scope. With the aid of new collaborator Richard File, Lavelle has made a record that connects the dots between the creeping melancholy of Talk Talk, the scaly electronics of Massive Attack's Mezzanine and the grand sky-bound epics of the Verve. Like its predecessor, there's a proliferation of guest appearances: Jarvis Cocker, Josh Homme, Brian Eno, Ian Brown, Massive Attack's Robert del Naja. But the vocals are assimilated much more successfully here, ensuring that guest never overpowers song. Lavelle still has a fine eye for casting his songs in the grandest narratives: "Panic Attack" samples the robotic pulse of Joy Division's "She's Not Control" and overlays it with blurred electronic shimmers and driving bass. When the late Eazy-E introduced Bone Thugs-N-Harmony to the world in 1994, the Grammy-winning quintet placed Cleveland on the rap map with their gospel-tinged vocal harmonies and nefarious triple-time rhymes. Years later, the crew don't mess with their distinct trademark formula, utilising speedy, sometimes indecipherable, flows on slum symphony "Pump, Pump", while boasting that they can still "harmonise like the Temptations" on "Guess Who's Back", a bouncy Organized Noize-produced rhythm track. As for crew's subject matter, it's as crude as ever: "Not My Baby", for example, sheds light on a touchy topic that seems to plague oversexed emcees--paternity tests to prove whether "groupie" claims are legit (the crew chants "ain't mine, not mine"). Sure, only Eazy-E (up in Heaven) knows why they sampled Phil Collins' "Take Me Home" ("Home"), but not since the "1st of tha Month", their remarkable ode to "gubment" cheese, have the crew sounded so tight.
