	Tell No-One (Ne Le Dis A Personne) 2 Disc Special Edition [2006] Se flere produkter fra Amazon Tell No One is that rare thing, a French thriller that bears all the hallmarks of a Hollywood remake, only with the French left in. There's no actual time to ponder the glossy look and feel though, as FranÃ§ois Cluzet's stoic but grief-stricken widower Alex races to clear his name, when the case of his wife's murder is reopened after eight years. This set up is wound even tighter upon his receipt of an email, seemingly from his wife, instructing him to follow those titular instructions. What follows is a nerve-tugging chase movie - making best possible use of Harlan Coben's source material - as Alex ducks and weaves between shady underworld goons, a gang of surprisingly helpful thugs and two laid back detectives, all of whom help raise the game of cat and mouse to dizzying heights. The twists and turns are many, and even though the story is a little too long, and its reveal steeped in a Miss Marple-sized helping of exposition, the film's emotional centre remains intact to the very last scene. While a big studio remake of Tell No One won't be short on A-List appeal and big noisy action, matching this film's mix of thrills and heart will be a rare feat indeed. -- Luke Mawson Fragt: Ukendt! 	Milan La Scala Orchestra Maria Callas: Popular Music from TV, Film and Opera Se flere produkter fra Amazon The voice of Maria Callas has found its way into the most unlikely nooks and crannies of the film and television industry. One recording was the inspiration for a rather overheated scene in the film Philadelphia, and she's also been roped in to sell drinks and cars (the Ford Mondeo). This compilation capitalises on this new aspect of her fame, and includes the film and advert recordings. But it also--rather cannily--includes music (not originally sung by her) which has become famous through the same celluloid and cathode routes. Thus "O mio babbino caro", which was sung by Kiri te Kanawa in A Room With a View and, "Ebben? ne andrÃ² lontana" sung by Wilhemina Wiggins in the film Diva are here given the Callas treatment. And what a treatment--the unmistakable voice, the intensity, the impeccable phrasing, the drama, the intelligence, the technique--it's all here, so just listen and marvel. The King and I - In 1955 this lavish production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway hit "The King and I", starring Yul Brynner as the King of Siam and Deborah Kerr as the governess sent to look after his children, was the most expensive film ever mounted by 20th Century Fox. The 40 sets in ripe decors by Walter M Scott and Paul S Fox included a ballroom of black marble with jade and silk tapestries and a banqueting scene with a table that gives the impression of stretching to infinity. The costumes by Irene Sharaff, notably the hoop ballroom gown for Deborah Kerr and those for the ballet "The Small House of Uncle Thomas", dazzle the eye in their delineation of Western manners and Oriental splendour. Brynner remains impressive as the King but his pidgin dialogue, inherited from Hammerstein's book, with the dropping of the definite article takes some adjustment. 	Kylie Minogue - Greatest Hits [2003] Se flere produkter fra Amazon This Greatest Hits compilation charts the period (1987-92) in Kylie's career when there was the most rapid change in both her image and music. Every single promo she made during her PWL period is featured, including the previously unreleased videos for "Made in Heaven" and "Celebration". Although the track listing is out of sequence, if watched in chronological order the distinct stylistic phases of Minogue over this five-year period soon become evident. From the cute bubble-perm Kylie of the "I Should Be So Lucky" era, to the sex-Kylie phase that commenced with 1990's "Better the Devil You Know", the videos represent all her early incarnations. Her fashion disasters are also recorded, too, such as the bizarre outfit and shoes she wore for "Got to be Certain" and the Parisian wartime look adopted for "Je ne sais pas pourquoi". Her most outrageous but greatest video moment is where she parodies certain movie stars in the chic video for "What Do I Have to Do?", and because of her heavy eye make-up almost earns herself the title drag-queen Kylie (watch out for sister Dannii who briefly stars in the video, wearing a blonde wig). All in all it's an excellent collection for those wanting a visual introduction to early Kylie, and/or those too young to remember her first time round. On the DVD: Kylie Greatest Hits unearths some very rare pieces of Kylie history and the producers of the DVD have gone out of their way to make the compilation as comprehensive as possible. However, the transfer quality is not much better than awful, both for rarities and more popular material such as "Especially for You". Diehard fans will be pleased, though, by the majority of the videos from the late-1980s including vintage personal introductions from Kylie about the making of the promos etc. Other bonus features include the videos for the Australian versions of "Locomotion" and "Word Is Out", and alternate promos of "Got to be Certain", and "I Should Be So Lucky". -- John Galilee Fragt: Ukendt! 	Lesley Garrett When I Fall In Love Se flere produkter fra Amazon When I Fall In Love, the latest album from English soprano and media personality Lesley Garrett, is being touted as something of a personal journey. Though she has covered pop songs in the past, this is her first collection of love songs and, as such, is a move into fairly new territory. As she works her way through the hand picked selection of evergreen gems that make up When I Fall In Love, it becomes quickly apparent that this is an album of mixed results. Garrett's smoothly operatic versions of the title track, "The Way We Were," and Shirley Bassey's "He Was Beautiful" give the album an airbrushed, superficial feel that continues through upbeat fare such as her version of Edith Piaf's "Non Je Ne Regrette Rien." As the album wears on it becomes obvious that it lacks the potency of previous projects like Tranquility or Travelling Light. Her take on usually vibrant songs like "Come What May" (alongside Michael Ball) and Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" come across as surprisingly lackluster, and though Garrett is undoubtedly more than capable of holding her own here, she fails to present any definitive or even challenging versions. La Juive, premiered in 1835 with all the spectacular pageantry demanded of a "grand opera", was an instant triumph; admired by such disparate musicians as Rossini, Wagner and Mahler, it remained an operatic staple for 100 years, but it has been conspicuously absent from the repertoire since then. This live recording by Austrian Radio (ORF) documents its 1999 revival at the Vienna State Opera. Why the neglect? The answer lies in EugÃ©ne Scribe's libretto. Set during the 1414 Council of Constance, when religious fanaticism made liaisons between Christians and Jews a capital crime, it adds a new twist to the theme of illicit love between a prince and a commoner: Rachel is Jewish, Prince LÃ©opold a Christian disguised as a Jew. However, though he callously betrays both her and his loving royal wife and infant son, it is the Jews' death the populace demands with blatant cruelty; LÃ©opold is saved when Rachel retracts her revelation of his guilt, while she and her father ElÃ©azar are thrown into a cauldron of boiling water. What attracted HalÃ©vy, himself a Jew, to this exercise in rampant anti-Semitism? True, the libretto contained all the elements of high drama--filial love, passion, treachery, vengeance, sacrifice--and HalÃ©vy exploited them to the hilt, making the stock characters and their emotions and relationships human and moving. The opera is very long and never performed uncut, and this recording is no exception. The problem is what to eliminate. The innumerable, often interminable recitatives are musically weak but crucial to the plot, so only the ballets and some choruses are omitted. The music is uneven, sometimes rather trite, but keeps getting better, reaching its highest points in the characters' confrontations. The script was directed by his son Nick and stars Sean Penn, who was set to star before the elder Cassavetes died. Penn plays Eddie, an alcoholic ne'er-do-well who loves his young wife Maureen (Robin Wright Penn) too much. When she is brutalised by a neighbour, Eddie goes nuts--and lands in a mental hospital for 10 years. When he is freed, he finds Maureen remarried to contractor Joey (John Travolta), with whom she has two children. But Eddie's love is too strong not to draw him back to her and make one final plea for her affection. A great showcase for all of the actors involved (the cast includes James Gandolfini, Harry Dean Stanton and Gena Rowlands), with a particularly fine performance by Sean Penn. Ben Stiller stars as Larry Daley, an underachieving inventor waiting for his ship to come in while getting evicted from one apartment after another for lack of funds. Larry's son needs some stability, so the well-meaning ne'er-do-well takes a job as night watchman at New York City's Museum of Natural History. What the soon-to-retire guards (Dick Van Dyke, Mickey Rooney, Bill Cobbs) don't tell him is that an ancient pharaoh's tablet in the museum causes everything on display to come to life at night. Thus, Larry meets representations of Teddy Roosevelt, Attila the Hun, fire-worshipping cavemen, and Roman Empire soldiers, and learns to cope with an excitable T-Rex and man-eating, ancient animals. The film might have left things at that, but an added story element gives Night at the Museum some extra urgency and excitement, especially for kids: Larry becomes responsible for keeping this nightly miracle going and preventing anything in the museum from dying due to exposure to sunrise. Computer effects, as well as wildly imaginative costumes and makeup, help make the film appeal to the 8-year-old in everyone. First track "B.U.D.D.Y.," which borrows from Ini Kamoze's "Here Comes the Hot Stepper" (which borrowed from Taana Gardner's "Heartbeat" before it), thumps along with the kind of out-there spirit that'll make you wish for a return to Maxwell's urban hang suite, circa 1996; "Ms. Philadelphia," co-written by Ne-Yo, sets the mood for cocktail-sipping urban sophisticates; and "Betterman" starts with a Justin Timberlake-reminiscent beat but settles into its own warm bath of sincerity. Soulchild's songs play like personal letters--you want to open them alone, then share the best ones with best friends. 	Buffy The Vampire Slayer - The Complete DVD Collection Se flere produkter fra Amazon From its charming and angst-ridden first season to the darker, apocalyptic final one, Buffy the Vampire Slayer succeeds on many levels, and in a fresher and more authentic way than the shows that came before or after it. How lucky, then, that with the release of its box set of seasons 1-7, you can have the estimable pleasure of watching a near-decade of Buffy in any order you choose. (And we have some ideas about how that should be done.) First: rest assured that there's no shame in coming to Buffy late, even if you initially turned your nose up at the winsome Sarah Michelle Gellar kicking the hell out of vampires (in Buffy-lingo, vamps), demons, and other evil-doers. Perhaps you did so because, well, it looked sort of science-fiction-like with all that monster latex. Start with season 3 and see that Buffy offers something for everyone, and the sooner you succumb to it, the quicker you'll appreciate how textured and riveting a drama it is. Why season 3? Because it offers you a winning cast of characters who have fallen from innocence: their hearts have been broken, their egos trampled in typically vicious high-school style, and as a result, they've begun to realize how fallible they are. As much as they try, there are always more monsters, or a bigger evil. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the core crew remains something of a unit--there's the smart girl, Willow (Alyson Hannigan) who dreams of saving the day by downloading the plans to City Hall's sewer tunnels and mapping a route to safety. There are the ne'r do wells--the vampire Spike (James Marsters), who both clashes with and aspires to love Buffy; the tortured and torturing Angel (David Boreanz); the pretty, popular girl with an empty heart (Charisma Carpenter); and the teenage everyman, Xander (Nicholas Brendon). Then there's Buffy herself, who in the course of seven seasons morphs from a sarcastic teenager in a minidress to a heroine whose tragic flaw is an abiding desire to be a "normal" girl. 	Cheikh Lo Bambay Gueej Se flere produkter fra Amazon This second offering from Senegal's majestic, Cheikh Lo was produced by Youssou N'Dour and Nick Gold at Studio Xippi in Dakar and sees Lo extend the vibe of his debut, "Ne la Thiass". The airy, uplifting, acoustic sound is propelled along by rippling sabar and tama drums and on Bambay Gueej he boosts his horn section to feature the tenor sax and arrangements of former James Brown side-man Pee Wee Ellis. As a Baye Fall, Cheikh is a conscious, religious man and his lyrics reflect his concerns. While "M'Beddemi" deals with homelessness, "N'Dox" and "N'Jarinu Garab" focus on Man's relationship to nature. There's a chemistry at work on this album that ensures the open spirit of collaboration never detracts from the overall feel. Bambay Gueej, tips a respectful nod to Fela's afro beat while Orquesta Aragon's mercurial flautist Richard Egues and the Afro Cuban All Stars stamp the sound of Cuba on "M'Beddemi" and "N'Jarinu Garab". 	Three Colours Red [1994] Se flere produkter fra Amazon The final section of the late Krzysztof Kieslowski's acclaimed Three Colours trilogy (preceded by Blue and White) is the least likely of the three to stand alone, and indeed benefits from a little familiarity with the first two parts. Nevertheless, it's a strong, unique piece that reflects upon the ubiquity of images in the modern world and the parallel subjugation of meaningful communication. IrÃ?ne Jacob plays a fashion model whose lovely face is hugely enlarged on a red banner no one in Geneva, Switzerland, can possibly miss seeing. Striking up a relationship with an embittered former judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant), who secretly scans his neighbours' conversations through electronic surveillance, Jacob's character becomes an aural witness to the secret lives of those we think we know. 	Three Colours Trilogy Se flere produkter fra Amazon Even though one can view each segment of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colours trilogy on its own, it seems absurd to do so; why buy the trousers instead of the entire suit? Created by Kieslowski and his writing partner Krzysztof Piesiewicz for France's bicentennial, the titles--and the themes of the films--come from the three colours of the French flag representing liberty, equality and fraternity. Blue examines liberation through the eyes of a woman (Juliette Binoche) who loses her husband and son in an auto accident, and solemnly starts anew. White is an ironic comedy about a befuddled Polish husband (Zbigniew Zamachowski) who takes an odd path of revenge against his ex-wife (Julie Delpy). A Swiss model (IrÃ?ne Jacob) strikes up a friendship with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who eavesdrops on his neighbours in Red. The trilogy is a snapshot of European life at a time of reconstruction after the Cold War, reflected through Kieslowski's moralist view of human nature and illumined by each title's palate colour. On the DVD: The DVD set has numerous extras spread throughout the three discs; the end result is a superior collection. Each disc has a short retrospective, culled together from new interviews with Kieslowski's crew, plus film critic Geoff Andrew, biographer Annette Insdorf (who also does the commentaries), and fellow Polish director Ageniska Holland. Producer Marin Karmitz also reminisces about the experience. There's an exceptional effort to show the magic of Kieslowski (who died two years after the trilogy) through a discussion of his various career phases, interviews with the three lead actresses, four student films, and archival materials including simple--and wonderful--glimpses of the director at work. Excellent insight is also provided by Dominique Rabourdin's filmed "cinema lessons" with Kieslowski.
