Nas Street's DiscipleSe flere produkter fra AmazonNas is incredibly talented, and most of Street's Disciple is as impressive as anything he's done in the previous few years. He's still hip-hop's most compelling and sophisticated lyricist (sorry Eminem, Jigga), and more than a few tracks here burn with his verbal heat--a flood of phrases and metaphors that inspire imagery as rich as in any movie. Nas The Lost Tapes Vol.1Se flere produkter fra AmazonCollecting bootlegs, rarities, and "underground jewels" of the last few years into one tight collection, Nas's The Lost Tapes is intended as a vault-clearing stop-gap between his last work Stillmatic, and his long-awaited sixth album, God's Son. It's also a good way of keeping the name on people's lips: as Nas's war of words with rival New York hip-hop mogul Jay-Z shifts up a gear into a truly tabloid-worthy rap feud, it's clear that the winner is not just going to be the one that drops the best rhyme--it's going to be the one that hogs the column inches. Those eager for some razor-sharp dissing will have to wait for the next album, however, because much of The Lost Tapes finds Nas in philosophical, reflective mood. "Doo Rags" is a vibrant, romantic vision of street life in the early 80s, Nas rapping of "the drinkers still drinking, and puffing the herb" over nostalgic Stevie Wonder-style piano flourishes, while "My Way" is a proud treatise on empire-building that ignores fatuous boasting in favour of a chronological approach that picks through history in sharp detail. There are dark moments: "Blaze A 50" is a grisly crime thriller set down on disc, while "Everybody's Crazy" fidgets with paranoia. But The Lost Tapes is, most of all, a reminder of this Brooklyn street poet's continuing lyrical excellence. That's a wise move, however you look at it. -- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Nas God's SonSe flere produkter fra AmazonDespite its grandiose title, God's Son features a semi-repentant Nas. After his stunning debut, many moons ago, it's been downhill ever since for the New York MC. Embroiled in petty spats, overblown productions, large paydays and a huge case of ego-itus, his original brilliance seemed lost forever. However the two-disc God's Son is a return to form. The first single, "Made You Look" is a barnstorming collaboration with Fat Joe. "The Book of Rhymes" is Nas back to his lyrical best, once again showing himself as the real inheritor to Rakim's MC crown. Nas goes deep into the funk on "Get Down", which features a heavy chunk of James Brown, another echo of Rakim's work to which Nas has openly aspired to. There are unsavoury moments. Nas's referral to sleeping with hookers on "Pussy Killz" veers between a sexual-health warning and a tongue lashing of women in general. He also advocates the creationist theory on "Dance". Perhaps he's trying to get the Texas Christian vote? However, such lyrical theorising will probably pass most by--those who just want to hear the beats. On this, God's Son delivers particularly well, especially with the Alicia Keys-enhanced tribalist "Warrior's Song". God's Son suffered heavy bootlegging prior to release and the track listing changed radically. Plenty of (good) material wasn't officially released--undoubtedly there's another Lost Tapes album on the way. Tupac's appearance on "Thugz Mansion" is proof positive that the Tupac impersonator out there is doing very good business. Nas 10 Year Anniversary Illmatic Platinum SeriesSe flere produkter fra AmazonNasir Jones made this debut album at the age of 20, already armed with the calm perceptiveness and been-there-done-that attitude of a much older ghetto vet, though sometimes his inner callow youth shows itself. Illmatic is a look back at a life spent in the culture of the projects, acknowledging joy as much as pain and taking note of violence as a fact of his environment rather than a focus of his life.
