Roxy Music The Thrill of It All: Roxy Music 1972-1982Se flere produkter fra AmazonThere have been few rock & roll debuts more striking than Roxy Music's first single "Virginia Plain". It arrived right out of leftfield in 1972, at a time when music was bogged down in the mire of insipid chart pop, turgid progressive rock and mindless denim boogie. Roxy Music offered up a hint of glamour and mystery, a unique sense of style, and a sound quite unlike anything heard in the 16 years since Elvis checked into Heartbreak Hotel. A series of dazzling singles followed--"Pyjamarama", "Street Life", "All I Want Is You"--but none quite matched that arresting initial impact. The Thrill Of It All is an elegant four CD box-set that draws from Roxy Music's eight original albums, as well as collating rare B-sides and non-album tracks onto the fourth disc. If there is a criticism, it is that despite the elaborate packaging--Roxy Music always had a good visual eye--there is a paucity of otherwise unavailable material. A box set is, of course, a testament to an artist's stature, but it is still most likely to be bought by die-hard fans. For that audience, demos, alternate takes, live cuts and unreleased studio material are a welcome bonus--even a booklet with Bryan Ferry's inscrutable lyrics transcribed would be a nice reward for such loyalty. In terms of musical quality though, there is nothing at all wrong with The Thrill Of It All. The early Roxy Music were a fascinating result of the collision between Bryan Ferry's finely honed pop sensibilities and Brian Eno's avant-garde imagination. Drummer Paul Thompson meanwhile kept all the weirdness centred, Phil Manzanera lent distinctive guitar flourishes and Andy Mackay's oboe added another dimension. The first two Roxy Music albums took 1970s rock & roll into whole new territories--Ferry had one of the most distinctive British singing voices ever, which lent a cool detachment to much of the material. Jean Michel Jarre Aero [CD + DVD]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAero is Jean Michel Jarre's first experiment in surround sound as well as being the most respectable "best of" album in 13 years. The album features reworked versions of his golden oldies and three new pieces. The result of the new orchestration is a modern-sounding remix album, rather than a definitive greatest hits. The album was designed and recorded in multi channel surround-sound and is therefore presented on both a CD and DVD in the same package (including Dolby Digital and DTS tracks allowing playback on a standard DVD video player in 5.1 surround sound). Sound quality is top notch as you'd expect although sometimes the transitional pieces between tracks overdo the surround effects for the sake of demonstrating the technology. The music itself, as a collection of greatest hits tracks, is a surprising choice, presumably designed for the best 5.1 surround sound. There's no "Revolutions", "Chronologie 4", "Ethnicolor", "Calypso", "Oxygene 8" or "Hey Gagarin", for instance. We are treated to fresh, excellent reworkings of classics: "Oxygene 2", "Equinoxe 3" and "Last Rendez-vous". Aging tracks such as "Oxygene 4", "Chronologie 6", and "Rendez-vous 4" have all been brought up to date. The three new tracks recall Robert Miles and Orbital. They're good but there's a feeling they were left over from previous projects. There are too many synth presets sounding too clinical and lacklustre compared to the high standard of sounds used in Jarre's other studio albums. Moreover, there are finer unreleased tracks that could have been included. Also included on the DVD is a visual track. A close-up of the actress Anne Parillaud's ( Nikita) eyes while she listens to the music for the full 73 minutes in one take is typical of Jarre's subtle, minimalist and "non-MTV" visual style. Aero will appeal to those wanting to test their home cinema equipment and those seeking some of the greatest hits of France's electronica wizard. -- Colin Neal Fragt: Ukendt! |

They may have nurtured the same synth-pop sound as The 'League, Duran Duran and other contemporaries, but the trio worked hard to exhibit a slightly less flamboyant visual aesthetic and create something different from the norm. Largely, they succeeded. Following the re-release of key albums Penthouse and Pavement, The Luxury Gap and How Men Are, Sight and Sound collects together the band's major, minor and almost-hits as well as all their promotional videos. It's a definitive overview, featuring not only early singles "Play To Win" and "(We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang" plus obvious smashes "Temptation", "Come Live With Me", "Crushed By The Wheels of Industry" and "Let Me Go", but also a smattering of songs from less successful albums such as Pleasure One and Teddy Bear, Duke & Psycho.
