Boy George U Can Never B 2 StraightSe flere produkter fra AmazonAt first glance, Culture Club's DJ-ing Don of Drag Queen Pop seems an unlikely candidate for the "unplugged" treatment of U Can Never Be 2 Straight. But no-one ever suggested that Boy George couldn't carry a tune and--despite the dance beats and glossy synth textures getting replaced here by acoustic and steel guitars, fiddles and gentle horns--the music is essentially no different to the MOR pop that he and Culture Club are famous for. And that, in the end, is the problem. Opening track "Ich Bin Kunst" ("I Am Art") initially leads us down a different path, being a ludicrously camp romp through Brel/Brecht alt-cabaret territory, complete with George self-dramatising his sexuality and shock value to the point of parody. But it's a red herring: the rest of the set is dominated by love confessionals (much of it aimed, by suggestion at least, at straight men who don't know what they want) over innocuous new tunes and reworkings of past solo, Culture Club and Jesus Loves You nuggets. If "Fat Cat"'s bitchy metaphors at least ripple the bland surface, then the rest is predictable and samey--apart from a rehash of old Hare Krishna tribute "Bow Down Mister", which many would suggest should've been left where it was. --Garry Mulholland Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

By "punk", they do not mean the art-school flamboyance or anarcho-posturings of the Sex Pistols, or the heartfelt, in-your-face ragings of Henry Rollins and Black Flag. Rather, this is the simple peacetime punk of kids with energy to spare. It's about sunny days, pretty girls, BMX bikes and playful pogo-ing. It's about loneliness, alienation and the desperate conviction of teenage love. And, above all, it's about music as a force for good. The Bouncing Souls deliver a positivist, anthemic pop that's specifically designed to raise depressed spirits, as evinced lyrically by the two openers, "That Song" and "Private Radio" and the closing "Gone". In this respect, they have much in common with Green Day and Offspring but they carefully avoid the deliberate frivolity of those bands, evidently aiming to reflect the lives and feelings of their fans, rather than become rock & roll personalities themselves. Unfortunately, this realism makes How I Spent My Summer Vacation increasingly samey and inconsequential as the tracks pass. Blur Think TankSe flere produkter fra AmazonThink Tank was an emotional experience for Blur, with reports of problems--not least the exit of founding member Graham Coxon half way through recording. With that in mind you might expect the end product to be a mess. In the event, although Think Tank, like its predecessor, is a hotchpotch of ideas, it is a cohesive album. After the brash pop of Damon Albarn's Gorillaz side-project and the overtly emotional 13, this is a soulful and subtle affair. There are a couple of classic Blur rock moments here: "Crazy Beat" is cut from the same cloth as the pogo-ing classic "Song 2", while the painfully short but brilliant "We've Got a File on You" sounds like agitprop punkers Crass in a fight with a Moroccan snake charmer. But while Damon Albarn still has an ear for a melody, Blur sound like a different band without Coxon's guitars to subvert them. Morocco and Damon's Mali Music have changed Blur. "Caravan" uses a sleepy rhythm that plods at a camel's pace, while "Gene by Gene" employs cross rhythms evoking images of the desert and sound textures from unorthodox sources. Blur are now using sounds to create their music rather than the standard rock line up. For some fans it may be one evolution too far, but for fans who appreciate them as they are--a band that refuses to stay still-- Think Tank should be an interesting listen. -- Caroline Butler Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |

Various Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black PearlSe flere produkter fra AmazonOne might expect a modicum of good-natured "Yo-ho-ho-ing"--or maybe a little rousing Korngold/Errol Flynn/ Captain Blood orchestral romanticism--on Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl, what with its being loosely based on the popular Disney theme-park audio-animatronic ride. Instead composer Klaus Badelt initially entices us with some sparing Celtic folk charm, then unleashes a furious broadside of symphonic and choral thunder to rival his ominous score for K-19. The composer's fellow German mentor is an obvious influence throughout (the album is credited, with a wink, as "Score overproduced by Hans "Long John" Zimmer") but Badelt brings his own muscular instincts to bear throughout. Perhaps shrewdly realising that genre clichés are nothing if not for reinventing, Badelt delivers his rhythmically nervous Eurocentric sensibilities--sort of Holst duels Shostakovich on the Spanish Main--with the subtlety of a scorching cannonball. It's seasoned with a little romantic respite in the final act, if a bit gingerly, and could no doubt profit by some of Korngold's sparkling melodic verve. The concert itself is a wonder to behold, as Portishead (Geoff Barrows, Adrian Utley, Beth Gibbons, Andy Smith) smoke cigarettes, chew gum, scratch records and behave in a generally hip manner while around them the 30-piece New York philharmonic orchestra and a five-piece horn ensemble do their thing. The performance and subsequent recording of this gig has, in some cases, offered a preferred body of work to Portishead's studio based albums, proving that live gigs do not necessarily equal poor production values. From the haunting "All Mine" to the ever-popular "Glory Box" the energy from the band members and the welcome addition of a live orchestra adds a breathtaking edge to the well-known tunes. The camera adds to the magic of the concert, sweeping majestically across the action and the audience, helping to capture the slow, silky essence of this urbanized opulence. On the DVD: As well as re-EQ'ing all of the music, the band have provided extra musical snippets, footage from their world tour (which followed this concert), an exclusive acoustic version of "Wandering Star", all of their music videos and the cultish short film they made in 1994. The "road tour" section is quite dull, shot from a car racing around provincial England (Portishead, mainly). The music videos, by and large, are more interesting and artful, particularly the video for "Only You" which is undeniably beautiful. The parting shot is their short movie "To Kill A Dead Man" (directed, shot, acted and scored by the band), which is entertaining, despite the hefty disclaimer that precedes it. All in all this is a very comprehensive overview of one of the 90s' most revered bands and a worthy purchase even for those who have the original VHS edition.-- Paul Sullivan Inkl. fragt: Ukendt |
