Molotov MolomixSe flere produkter fra AmazonMolomix, a collection of remixes of several songs from Molotov's 1997 debut, ¿Dónde Jugaran las Niñas?, contrasts with most remix albums in that it doesn't feature complete overhauls of the original songs. As a result, many of the remixes here are rather dull: the club mixes of "Puto" and "Cerdo" are simply sped-up to make good dance-floor fodder; the "urban mix" of "Gimme Tha Power" differs only slightly from its original; and the drum & bass remix of "Gimme tha Power" is simply generic. Still, Molomix has a few things going for it. "El Carnal de las Estrellas," a previously unreleased track, combines a soundtrack-like string arrangement with Molotov's hard-hitting raps. Also, the group's hilarious version of "Rap Soda y Bohemia" (a.k.a. Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody") is included in its uncensored version--the version that appeared on a Latin Queen tribute album deleted a reference to serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. But aside from these two nonessential tracks, listeners unfamiliar with Molotov, Mexico City's answer to Rage Against the Machine, would do better to start with Dónde. --Jeff Niesel Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Time What Time Is It?Se flere produkter fra AmazonJunking '70s-funk cliches for a stripped-down sound (keyboards and synthesizers replaced the horns) built around a hard-rockin' guitar and a tougher-than-tough rhythm section--all topped off with a heapin' helping of humor--this Minneapolis-based sextet was once the best funk band in the land. This second LP is the best single album from the act, which soon imploded, owing to an over-abundance of talent. Bug-eyed vocalist Morris Day and guitarist Jesse Johnson went on to semi-successful solo careers; keyboardist Jimmy Jam and bassist Terry Lewis became a mega-platinum writing/production team (Janet Jackson, most notably); drummer extraordinaire Jellybean Johnson and keyboardist Monte Moir were the other members. Co-produced by Day and Jamie Starr (a.k.a. Prince), this six-song 1982 effort sports three wall-rattling party-starters: the self-explantory "Wild and Loose," the tongue-in-cheek dance tune "The Walk," and the still-percolating, knotty-but-nice rhythms of "777-9311." Toss in a "New Wave"-style rocker, a droll take on the obligatory love-man ballad, and the band's straight-faced answer to the titular question ("Time to fix your clock!") is O-B-V-I-O-U-S. --Don Waller Fragt: Ukendt! |

Krs 1 Return of the Boom BapSe flere produkter fra AmazonBy 1993, hip-hop was in transition from an organic form of musical expression into a culture fabricating stars and big business. With many icons from his era either ageing or losing their relevance (e.g. Chuck D, Rakim), KRS-ONE dropped a gem of an album that not only navigated the sound of the day but led the charge. Shedding his previous Boogie Down Productions moniker, KRS-One's Return of the Boom Bap is not just an album: it is KRS's call to arms for the return of hard beats and real rap in hip-hop music. The former took many forms, thanks to the recruitment of Gang Starr's DJ Premier, who was hitting his stride as hip-hop's pre-eminent beat-maker. Primo crafted the classic head-nod rhythm of the title track, the bump of "Outta Here", an autobiographical tale of KRS-One's rise in hip-hop, and the dance-hall-inspired riddims of "Black Cop" and "Sound of Da Police". Lyrically, KRS-One displayed variety in both style and content, meshing old-school bombast ("Mortal Thought"), consciousness ("Higher Level"), and crafty and conceptual wordplay ("I Can't Wake Up"). The album opens with KRS-ONE boasting, even decreeing, that he would "be here forever". At the cross-roads, this album made it seem true. -- Joseph Patel Fragt: Ukendt! |

Stereo MC's RetroactiveSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's hard to believe that the Stereo MC's were once the flag-bearers of British hip-hop, but that's exactly how they were perceived way back in the late 80s. The best-of Retroactive comes 15 years on from their first basic beats and rhymes experiments. It seems strange to think of them as a true hip-hop outfit--sure, their baggy, slightly mystic records have always been built around Rob Birch's typically English rap, but musically they've always been more funk-meets-breaks than straight-up hip-hop. Either way, they've been responsible for some fine records in their time--as this slightly over-long collection ably shows. Naturally, the best stuff here comes from their productive early 90s period--quirky, off-kilter funk-hop concoctions like "Creation", "Two Horse Town" (from the underrated Supernatural album) and "Lost in Music". There are interesting nuggets elsewhere, of course--most notably the charity track "The Sweetest Truth" and the De La Soul vibes of "On 33"- but little stands up to the brilliant singles of their Connected-era glory years. Still, if you want a neat summary of the career of one of Britain's most distinctive dance acts, Retroactive is definitely worth a spin. -- Matt Anniss Fragt: Ukendt! |

Van Halen The Best of Van Halen, Vol.1Se flere produkter fra AmazonIt took over 20 years for Van Halen to release a Best of album, and even then, the band downplayed the effort. Instead sticking to the original plan of releasing a two-disc set--one of material with original front-man David Lee Roth, and the other with his 11-year replacement Sammy Hagar--the band opted for a single CD chronicling their entire career. For the previously uninitiated, it's a golden introduction to a band that changed the face of 1980s hard rock. Guitar-blazing old tracks like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", and "Dance the Night Away" segue into more commercial numbers like "Jump" and "Panama" from 1984. These in turn, set the stage for Hagar's slicker, more polished vocals on "Right Now" and "How Do I Know When It's Love". But while newcomers will be thrilled with the delights within, old fans will probably find little of use, since the two highly touted new tracks with Roth are pretty disposable. --Jon Wiederhorn Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists fabric02: Terry FrancisSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe third mix compilation from London superclub Fabric, long-time resident Terry Francis turns out a set that's quite possibly Fabric's most truly representative dance-floor snapshot so far. Coming hot on the heels of fine Fabric mixes from fellow resident Craig Richards and Mo Wax mainman James Lavelle, Francis clearly has a couple of tough acts to follow. He's eager to prove he's up to the challenge, though, starting light and trippy with Chateau Flight's "Welcome" and Norken's "East", and gradually drawing the compilation into increasingly hypnotic depths of progressive tribal rhythms and entrancing, hard-edged tech-house. The subterranean echoes of Gruvhaus's "Frostreet" and the canyon-deep rave klaxons of SD Grooves' "Red Leather" take the mix deeper and deeper, but the compilation really hits its stride around 50 minutes in, with Dark Male's "Nightlife" upping the tempo and adding new layers of funky tech rhythm. A nice little builder, and a serious introduction to one of Fabric's most highly respected residents.-- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Rolling Stones Some Girls [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonA fresh, uncompromising attempt to incorporate 1978 pop techniques into the band's familiar sound, Some Girls opens with the disco sass of "Miss You" and closes with the self-destructive punk of "Shattered". (Both songs, especially "Miss You", with its distinctive Mel Collins sax solo, remain live showstoppers.) So the Stones declared credibility in the dance circuit without sacrificing their hard-rock reputation. Though the anti-love "Beast of Burden" and the stylishly slow "Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me)" continue to rack up the most airplay, the obscurities stand up surprisingly well. Worth replaying: Keith Richards's rickety rocker "Before They Make Me Run". --Steve Knopper Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tall Paul (mixed By) Headliners Vol.1: Mixed By Tall PaulSe flere produkter fra AmazonHeadliners is an energetic compilation of progressive trance and hard-edged house from the Ministry label mixed live at The Gallery by DJ Tall Paul Newman. Tall Paul's residency at this club has bought him a huge global following and listening to this album you will see why. The double-CD format allows Paul to experiment with a diverse selection of dance music while keeping the sounds tough and progressive. Opening with Laurent Garnier's "The Man with the Red Face" the album builds and builds with Leftfield and Afrika Bambaataa's "Afrika Shox" and Green Velvet Flash's "Timo Maas Dub" featuring on the first CD. On the second CD, the mood leans towards a more hard-edged sound creating a live dance floor atmosphere, highlights include Darude's classic Ibiza anthem "Sandstorm" and Tall Paul's own "Freebase". With Killer track after killer track combined with Paul's seamless mixing make this a must for the trance crew everywhere. -- Danny Johnstone Fragt: Ukendt! |

O-Town 2Se flere produkter fra AmazonWinner's of the US equivalent of Pop Stars, O-Town's debut was a frothy confection of slick dance-pop hits that sold over two million copies. O-Town 2 comes after two hard years of touring, the group members have stayed together and moved into a house in Santa Monica, California, where they cowrote six of the songs and enlisted one of rap's royalty to work with them. Nelly cowrote and produced "Favorite Girl" and adds his trademark vocals to "Make Her Say". Since leaving the world of TV, O-Town have moved away from their boy-band beginnings. As a result, they sometimes come across as a band in search of a sound as they switch from hip-hop to dance to pop. But O-Town's collective heart really seems to be in guitar-driven rock. They give Bon Jovi a run for their money on the rather overwrought "These Days", while "From the Damage" could have been lifted off of a Goo Goo Dolls disc. O-Town are a band in transition, but give them credit for taking over the reins of their career. Maybe by the next album, they'll figure out what they want to be now that they've grown up. --Jaan Uhelszki Fragt: Ukendt! |

Faithless No Roots [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAfter a decade as one of the world's most successful dance acts, Faithless's distinct sound has put them at risk of becoming dinosaurs. Thankfully No Roots doesn't rest on the laurels of former glory and delivers something quite special. Sister Bliss's shrill, semi-hard-house synth stabs are all but gone, replaced by less dated sounds and more thoughtful use of them. Tempos are lower and song structure plays a more valuable part, for No Roots is in fact only two gigantic, epic songs, with each track a progression on the previous one and clever segues leading into the next. The only song that doesn't fall into "Parts 1 & 2" is the lead single version of "Mass Destruction" tacked on the end; it's a funky, breaks-based tune with Maxi Jazz's trademark vocal (used sparingly throughout the album) over live bass and guitars. Anyone who's seen Faithless live knows how they can jam around their back catalogue, making medleys and breakdowns of epic proportions: No Roots is a studio realisation of that. Highlighted by "I Want More", downbeat tunes build until their climax when an uptempo number will kick in. "Sweep" is simply a 909 drum and percussion loop with synth flourishes that drops into "Miss You Less, See You More", a classic house tune that closes part one of the album. Something other than a collection of hands-in-the-air floor-fillers and downbeat songs to chillout to, No Roots should be listened to in its entirety. It's a cohesive body of work that builds and dips in all the right places. -- David Trueman Fragt: Ukendt! |

Wumpscut Eevil Young FleshSe flere produkter fra AmazonYou have to hand it to Rudy Ratzinger, a.k.a. :Wumpscut:--oblivious to trends in late-'90s electronic dance music, he continues to carry a torch for good old-fashioned gothic-industrial. He does it so well, it's hard to fault him--indeed, the black-clad faithful look to him as something of a god. Eevil Young Flesh, his fourth full-length, will not disappoint those fans, no matter how formulaic a release it is. The rhythms are solid, propulsive, and infectious; the synth work is appropriately sinister; Ratzinger's vocals (alternately German and English) growl and shout at just the right intensity; and the film samples (sci-fi and porn, natch) are expertly placed. Ratzinger's obsession with death pervades the album (the insert even contains photos of past serial killers), but there are moments of great beauty, particularly on the violin-accented instrumental track "Outside," the military-grooved "Wasted Dreams," and "Tell Me Now," Ratzinger's German-language duet with the ethereal-voiced Lilli Stankowski. --Steve Landau Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists A Quiet Riot: 34 Tracks to Save Your LifeSe flere produkter fra AmazonSadly A Quiet Riot is neither a tribute to, nor a new album from, the once acclaimed Californian poodle rockers. But, cheer up--this collection of downbeat indie and the occasional dance track may lack the punch (and the hairspray) but that doesn't mean it isn't great. As an indie album first and foremost the selection on A Quiet Riot is hard to beat. Thankfully it avoids all the "chill-out" clichés and heavy-rotation britpop "classics", that tend to dominate other compilations, to deliver over two hours of inspired music from everyone that's anyone--from Goldfrapp to Wheat, the Reindeer Section to alt-country favourites Lambchop via Embrace, the Beta Band and Arab Strap. Acoustic and folk-influenced numbers come courtesy of the usual suspects--Badly Drawn Boy, Turin Brakes, Mojave 3, Kings of Convenience et al, while current indie darlings--Mull Historical Society, Simian and the Bees also feature with recent singles and even better album tracks. But some of the best tracks are from artists you really wouldn't expect to find on a compilation. Bands such as the sadcore outfit Low add a beautiful, sombre tone to the collection along with the spaced-out rock of the Zephyrs and the breathtaking orchestral influenced "Staralfur" from Sigur Ros. A Quiet Riot just goes to show, there's really no need to play it safe--a sentiment I'm sure Quiet Riot would only be too pleased to echo.-- Caroline Butler Fragt: Ukendt! |

The John Scofield Band überjamSe flere produkter fra AmazonScofield says about überjam that it's got enough funk for the college crowd and enough jazz for his old core fans, and he's pretty well right. It's tough to make a mark in the already well-gouged furrow of jazz-meets-hip-hop, and Scofield's so far had mixed success, but in überjam, he's produced his most consistently satisfying effort in the style. He's joined by his core trio, Avi Bortnick (guitars and samples), Jesse Murphy (bass) and Adam Deitch (drums and rap), plus guests John Medeski (mellotron, organ and clavinet) and Karl Denson (flute and saxophone). The result is a stew of high-energy grooves, spacey, sampled noises and swampy vamps. Perhaps the most succinct evidence of Scofield's happy symbiosis of jazz and dance is in "I Brake 4 Monster Booty", where a brief packet of hard, compressed rap precedes a ferocious guitar solo that has the pace and attack of a man half of Scofield's 50 years. In some of his jazz-dance efforts he's seemed content with laconic blues licks, but here the gloves are off. There's more intensely chromatic jazz in the grinding "überjam", the mood lightened by an ironically contorted quotation of "Blue Moon". That event is something of an indicator for the whole record: Sco's having a good time and making sure we get earfuls of the righteous stuff too. --Mark Gilbert Fragt: Ukendt! |

Janet Jackson Rhythm Nation 1814Se flere produkter fra AmazonPicking up where the breakthrough funk-pop of Control left off, Janet Jackson and her production team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis laced Rhythm Nation with high-minded references to societal ills--seldom the favored province of dance music, but a daring attempt nonetheless. Songs like "State of the World" and "The Knowledge" follow in the tradition of "free your mind and your ass will follow." Still, aside from the title track, it was the pure pop fare and dance music that stormed the charts: "Escapade," "Love Will Never Do (Without You)," "Alright," and "Come Back to Me" concentrate on the politics of personal relationships, not public policy, while "Black Cat" burns the place down with a fierce burst of hard rock. Rhythm Nation 1814 doesn't necessarily hang together thematically, but it's so chock full of hits, you scarcely notice. --Daniel Durchholz Fragt: Ukendt! |

Lou Reed EcstasySe flere produkter fra AmazonAs founder-member of the Velvet Underground, anything Lou Reed does is shadowed by that massively influential band--but since his eponymous solo debut Reed has gone his own way. Real commercial success came with 1972's Transformer, and critical acclaim followed in 1973 with Berlin. Subsequently, his solo career has been patchy, but Ecstacy is certainly on a par with his 1989 masterpiece New York. For all his innovation with the Velvets, Reed is, at heart, a rock & roll animal--utilising guitars, bass and drums and refusing to bow to modern styles. The material here is by turns intriguing (the title track, "Modern Dance", "Big Sky"), infuriating (the 18 minute "Like A Possum") and enchanting ("Baton Rouge"); but with his gritty, no-nonsense delivery and lyrics fashioned from hard-boiled American fiction, Reed never fails to involve the listener. --Patrick Humphries Fragt: Ukendt! |

Eiffel 65 EuropopSe flere produkter fra AmazonOn the wings of the hit club single "Blue (Da Ba Dee)", the Italian group Eiffel 65's Europop has soared into the ever-fleeting good graces of the dance-pop scene. The song is "a story about a little guy who lives in a blue world," and while it seems that the colour of the fellow's life was chosen arbitrarily, the real star of this tune is the vocoder effect. Listen to the entire record, though, and you'll hear this gimmick on almost all of the rest of the tracks as well. On first run-through, the one-trick-pony-ness of this effect is off-putting, yet it is the album's one distinctive element. The songs on Europop live up to the album's broad moniker, skimming the basics of tried-and-true dance-pop ("Living In A Bubble", "Now Is Forever"), techno ("Dub in Life", "Another Race"), and acid house ("Europop"). The group even renders a fairly accurate impression of Depeche Mode-style goth-pop ("Your Clown"). But the tracks rarely deviate from a four-on-the-floor thud, numbing the ears to the songs' otherwise distinguishable qualities. The record is too hard to swallow in one bite; its tracks are much tastier as singles, serving well in a club setting as segues to stronger songs by other artists. --Beth Massa Fragt: Ukendt! |

Mis-Teeq Eye CandySe flere produkter fra AmazonEye Candy, the follow up to their debut, Lickin' on Both Sides, isn't as straightforward as it could be for Mis-Teeq. Their debut had the world at its feet--they were simultaneously the garage act with the most crossover appeal and the most credible pop act around; with their mixture of garage vocals and traditional R&B making them a very exciting package. For Eye Candy, however, things are different. With the garage scene having lost some of its sparkle, and the Sugababes pushing them hard on the cool pop side, it's a tough time for the Mis-Teeq girls. Luckily they've kept Swedish producers extraordinaire Stargate on, plus with their trademark straight forward R&B and a hint of garage courtesy of Alesha's scattergun vocal style. "Scandalous" is a good example, with an evil-sounding bass line welded to the girls' sweetly sung vocals, as is the lively garage pop of "Dance Your Cares Away". This is a slightly more mature work than Lickin' was, though, with tracks such as "Can't Get it Back" showing a sophisticated side that's been missing until now, and recalls an on-form TLC. This is not a quantum leap forward by any means, more confirmation of their rightful place--at the centre of the UK R&B scene. -- Chris Blenkarn Fragt: Ukendt! |

Toni Braxton More Than a WomanSe flere produkter fra AmazonMore Than A Woman is the sixth album from sophisticated R & B singer Toni Braxton. Whether she's writing about her own anguish or interpreting someone else's, Braxton has a way of cutting straight to the soul. It's why her signature hit "Un-Break my Heart" was a smash, and why More Than a Woman is such a terrific album: she's angry, and she's skilled enough in R & B soul to exorcise those demons. The soaring and sassy he-done-me-wrong lament "Lies, Lies, Lies"--its chorus powered by thickly layered vocals--is utterly irresistible. "Give It Back" similarly scolds a cad caught stepping out on our gal. Braxton also finds success in happiness: the lilting, Spanish-flavoured "Me & My Boyfriend" is a joyful ode to being together, while the swooning, synth-juiced "Tell Me"--despite its soft, innocuous exterior--finds Braxton seducing a lover by checking off her attributes (hard body, wearing a thong) while offering a private dance. Braxton's husky voice continues to make hairs stand on end, and while More Than a Woman doesn't find her busting down doors stylistically, loyalists will find plenty to praise. --Kim Hughes Fragt: Ukendt! |

Various Artists The Braindance CoincidenceSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhen listening to Braindance, it's somewhat hard to believe that it has been 10 years since the inception of Rephlex Records but Richard D James and Grant Wilson-Claridge's legendary imprint is indeed the latest in a recent plethora of dance labels to reach its first decade. The pair choose to mark the occasion with a mid-price package, Braindance, which brings together back catalogue highlights from their impressive artistic array. The Gentle People open proceedings with the sublime "Journey" but it isn't long before the broken percussives and squealing analogues that have defined much of the output start to raise their head. Global Goon, Ovuka and the Railway Raver offer a rich emotive take while Squarepusher and Cylob bring the noise, the former ravaging "Psultan" by way of drum & bass beats while the latter lays down his inspired robot-voxed, post-pop "Rewind". With so much ground covered in the 16 tracks, all of the material boasts its own strengths though it is m-Ziq's "Swan Vesta" which stands out - bouncing wood block b lines and crazed atmospheres rising to through a rail slamming melodic to a spine crumbling crescendo. -- Kingsley Marshall Fragt: Ukendt! |

Henri Salvador Room With a ViewSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's not every day that an 80-something crooner steps out of American obscurity with an album of warm-as-fresh-pastry cabaret music. Of course, Salvador is no Henri-come-lately. He's famous in France and francophone former colonies (such as his native Cayenne, French Guiana), with decades of television and recording work to his credit. With Room with a View it's time for Stateside listeners to play catch up. This album was reportedly recorded on the verge of Salvador's retirement, and though the sound is classique, many of the songs are of recent vintage. Salvador's charming, half-spoken vocals will resound with listeners familiar with the suave stylings of such deceased cabaret practitioners as Charles Trenet and Walter Hyatt. There's also a bit of Danny Kaye in his phrasing on the album's lighter fare, such as the brass-band-flavoured "Mademoiselle"--no surprise given Salvador's extensive comedic resumé. Younger audiences primed by the ironic, sophisticated grooves of Dimitiri from Paris and Money Mark will delight in much of the instrumentation here. The album is, in fact, a triumph of production and arranging. Full orchestras are cued, at times, at the same volume as a single instrument, reduced to the level of pure atmosphere. One track, "Il Fait Dimanche", has a funky vamp that demands to be sampled for the contemporary dance floor. Another, "Faire des Rondes dans L'Eau", subsists on strummed guitar and a trap set, with the occasional gypsy-style, savoury violin part added for spice. Throughout, Salvador presents himself as an astute, sympathetic performer. On "Je Sais Que Tu Sais", it's hard to tell where his whispered voice ends and the drummer's light brushes begin. Apparently, swingers--in the jazz sense of the word--get better with age. --Marc Weidenbaum Fragt: Ukendt! |
