Roxy Music The Thrill of It All: Roxy Music 1972-1982Se flere produkter fra AmazonThere have been few rock & roll debuts more striking than Roxy Music's first single "Virginia Plain". It arrived right out of leftfield in 1972, at a time when music was bogged down in the mire of insipid chart pop, turgid progressive rock and mindless denim boogie. Roxy Music offered up a hint of glamour and mystery, a unique sense of style, and a sound quite unlike anything heard in the 16 years since Elvis checked into Heartbreak Hotel. A series of dazzling singles followed--"Pyjamarama", "Street Life", "All I Want Is You"--but none quite matched that arresting initial impact. The Thrill Of It All is an elegant four CD box-set that draws from Roxy Music's eight original albums, as well as collating rare B-sides and non-album tracks onto the fourth disc. If there is a criticism, it is that despite the elaborate packaging--Roxy Music always had a good visual eye--there is a paucity of otherwise unavailable material. A box set is, of course, a testament to an artist's stature, but it is still most likely to be bought by die-hard fans. For that audience, demos, alternate takes, live cuts and unreleased studio material are a welcome bonus--even a booklet with Bryan Ferry's inscrutable lyrics transcribed would be a nice reward for such loyalty. In terms of musical quality though, there is nothing at all wrong with The Thrill Of It All. The early Roxy Music were a fascinating result of the collision between Bryan Ferry's finely honed pop sensibilities and Brian Eno's avant-garde imagination. Drummer Paul Thompson meanwhile kept all the weirdness centred, Phil Manzanera lent distinctive guitar flourishes and Andy Mackay's oboe added another dimension. The first two Roxy Music albums took 1970s rock & roll into whole new territories--Ferry had one of the most distinctive British singing voices ever, which lent a cool detachment to much of the material. Charlie Chaplin - Limelight [1952]Se flere produkter fra AmazonOne of Charlie Chaplin's most personal projects was 1952's Limelight for which he composed the unforgettably haunting score and which featured his son Sydney in a major supporting role. The result is a bittersweet masterwork, a May-September romance between an ascendant ballerina (Claire Bloom in only her second film) and a fading clown. Script and performances are superb, and though entirely studio-made, with London recreated in America, Chaplin's great visual sensibility ensures the production never feels stage-bound. The story harks back to the glory years of Music Hall and in fictionalised form draws heavily on Chaplin's experiences as recounted in his superb autobiography. More affectionate and philosophical than the comparable Sunset Boulevard (1950), the story movingly echoes A Star is Born (1937) and The Red Shoes (1948), while one brilliant touch is the inclusion of Chaplin's fellow "silent" era star, Buster Keaton as his stage partner. Comedy is not forgotten, but this is at heart a moving reflection on the passage of time, a deeply autobiographical work in which the never seen background of the Great War is an ironic contrast to Chaplin's celebration of youth, theatre, music, love and life itself. On the DVD: Limelight is presented in the original 4:3 black and white with excellent mono sound and a picture which apart from a little unobtrusive grain is absolutely immaculate. Also included are French and Italian-dubbed versions and an English Dolby Digital 5.1 version of the soundtrack, which simply adds unnecessary spatial processing to the mono original. The disc features multiple subtitle options, including English for hard of hearing. Disc 2 features a very useful six-minute introduction by David Robinson and an excellent 26-minute new documentary featuring contributions from Claire Bloom, Sydney Chaplin and Bernardo Bertolucci. One remarkable extra is Chaplin's entire Oscar-winning 58-minute score available as 36 separate musical cues in excellent mono. There is a four-minute scene tha Fragt: Ukendt! |

For company they have the ferocious alien Drashigs while outside the machine a potentially devastating conspiracy is afoot. A long-time fan favourite, the four-part thriller remains one of the most enjoyable of the Jon Pertwee era stories. On the DVD: Doctor Who: Carnival of Monsters on DVD has an excellent 4:3 image and mono sound far better than was ever heard on the original broadcasts. Heading a massive range of extras is a commentary with Katy Manning being wonderfully enthusiastic and producer-director Barry Letts getting a little more technical. There are English subtitles not only for the episodes but also for the commentary, as well as a separate on-screen information text option. Also included are two extended and one deleted scene, Barry Lett's more tightly edited preferred ending, a trailer for a 1981 season of Doctor Who repeats and a never used arrangement of the title music. The idea is to step up our level of fitness gradually, until we can fit the sessions together into one mammoth workout. Conley reminds us of this at carefully spaced intervals--"Hayley lost five and a half stone"--to give us a goal and keep us at it. We are instructed to keep our eyes on the individual whose exercise level best suits our own. So we can leap along with Annette, or march with Debbie. Conley packs many different movements into each session, so you really do feel as if you're working the whole of your body. But be warned, some moves are more difficult than they look, so make sure you clear a big enough space in the living room, and put breakables and the dog out of harm's way!
