Randy Newman Bad LoveSe flere produkter fra AmazonThree songs into Bad Love, Randy Newman lobs a smart bomb into the bunker of classic rock, impersonating a boomer-aged rocker just going through the motions, "Each record that [he's] making ... like a record that [he's] made--just not as good." Giving the punch line added snap is the happy irony of Newman's own music at midlife, which proves as perceptive, funny, and, yes, moving as any he's recorded. Comparisons to past triumphs are inevitable here, and mostly favourable, starting with the mock piety of "My Country", an anthem to America's virtual family life entranced by television, "having other people's voices fill our minds." Elsewhere, he grins through a new geopolitical patter song ("The Great Nations of Europe"), undertakes his own dialectic on materialism with the ghost of Karl Marx ("The World Isn't Fair"), and, in the album's mordant zenith, conjures the sputtering jealousy and lust of an elderly New Orleans burgher smitten by a sweet young thing. That song, "Shame", embellishes a piano blues that might have fit snugly on 12 Songs, with choral and instrumental flourishes that are apt and hilarious--mocking female singers repeat the title in frank emulation of Sylvia Robinson's venerable disco hit, while elsewhere Newman's arrangements suggest Carl Stalling's vivid Looney Tunes scores. --Sam Sutherland Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Byrds The Notorious Byrd Brothers: RemasteredSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Notorious Byrd Brothers captures the Byrds between the seminal folk-rock glories of their better-known mid-1960s triumphs and the equally influential country-rock that would soon follow, but the album is no holding action: with one time Beach Boy associate Gary Usher producing and Roy Halee engineering, the band weaves its signature vocal harmonies and chiming guitars through a lusher, more impressionistic art-pop tapestry that stops just short of post- Sgt. Pepper's cliché, employing phased vocals, sound effects, Moog synthesiser, and horns. Thematically, the project pits utopian innocence ("Tribal Gathering", "Dolphins Smile") against a new wariness ("Artificial Energy", a cautionary look at amphetamines, and the Vietnam vignette of "Draft Morning"). In a field of well-paced, inventive songs, the zenith is the silken, wistful "Goin' Back", Carole King's poignant meditation on childhood and innocence. --Sam Sutherland Fragt: Ukendt! |

Primal Scream Beautiful FutureSe flere produkter fra AmazonBeautiful Future--a hopelessly optimistic moniker for their ninth album, no matter which way you approach it, since Primal Scream are almost universally accepted to have strutted past their zenith around the same time they helpfully mislaid their vowels (on 2000's unrelentingly anarchic Xtrmntr). To claim any future, especially after the all-too-brief successes of 2006's turgid Riot City Blues, let alone a handsome one is foolhardy to say the least. But, you see, they're actually being cuttingly sarcastic, or so we ascertain from Bobby Gillespie's ham-fisted sloganeering on the title track's tirade against modern ills ("you live by the sword, you die by the sword, you're only free to buy things you can't afford", etc.). If anything in particular is exposed as a spent force here it is he and his pen, sense disregarded to the point of parody, words drifting like flotsam amid the band's systematic attempts to reinvent themselves. The small miracle is that they just about manage. "Beautiful Future" leads into the album with a curious and eventually overwhelming infectiousness, gleaming like CSS delivering a Shirelles pastiche complete with cheesy bell-ringing and an effeminate vocal delivery that almost clouds over the lyrical content. "I Love to Hurt (You Love to Be Hurt)" actually features CSS's Lovefoxx as this album's Kate Moss and holds its own with some minimalist malevolence. As an album it jerks and it stumbles, lacking a definitive identity, but it at least ensures they'll live to see another day. A future of some sort is assured. --James Berry Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Who Thirty Years Of Maximum R&BSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis exemplary four-disc box takes the high road, attempting nothing less than an honest reconstruction of the Who's stormy, adventurous, uneven pilgrimage. While offering an evenhanded cross-section of single hits and classic album tracks, 30 Years garnishes the expected high points with B-sides, alternate and live versions of familiar tracks, and the quartet's earliest singles as the High Numbers. Reinforcing the package's documentary agenda are interview and stage-patter sound bites. What emerges is a fascinating chronicle of how the Shepherd's Bush mods journeyed from the giddy, explosive concision of their January 1965 debut single, "I Can't Explain", to the discursive, knotty sweep of creative architect Pete Townshend's "rock operas", Tommy, Quadrophenia and Lifehouse. The Who's swift evolution into rock visionaries is traced chronologically, meaning the band's original immersion in "maximum R&B", which forged their earliest club dates, doesn't surface on record until midway through the sequence, on key tracks from their thundering Live at Leeds album. Fans may quibble over the relative weight given specific albums, but the shape of the Who's career and their passionate identification with their audience are rendered faithfully. So, too, is Townshend's skill at mingling issues of faith and identity with generational manifestoes and sly broadsides. And there's ample evidence of the quartet's outsize musical power; the sheer volume and violence that earned them notoriety early on is matched by a lyricism that deepens by mid career. Given the candor of the presentation, it's not surprising that 30 Years reaches its zenith midway through the set or that the last song (a reunion of the surviving trio covering Elton John) can't help seeming anticlimactic. --Sam Sutherland Fragt: Ukendt! |

Crosby Stills & Nash 4 Way StreetSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis is one of those albums where you'll want to cherry-pick favourites. Recorded live when the supergroup was at its commercial zenith, it's sloppy in spots where precision is called for; and the hyperbolic counterculture rants sound a bit silly these days (bellows Stills: "Jesus Christ was the first non-violent revolutionary! Ah, dig it, dig it!"). On the other hand, the electric jams are enlivened by some charged guitar skirmishes between Stills and Young. Those who owned the original two-record set will be pleased by the additional Graham Nash song ("King Midas in Reverse") and Young's acoustic "The Loner" / "Cinnamon Girl" / "Down by the River" medley. --Steven Stolder Fragt: Ukendt! |

Dianne Reeves In the Moment: Live in LaSe flere produkter fra AmazonFor three decades, Dianne Reeves has been one of the most popular vocalists, thanks to her well-produced recordings and engaging live shows. On this date, recorded before an audience of 300 fans, Reeves weaves her trademark, horn-like contralto over smooth grooves that cross over mainstream jazz, contemporary pop and world music lines. Her band, featuring keyboardist Otmaro Ruiz and Wynton Marsalis's bassist, Reginald Veal, delivers the Cat Stevens-associated church hymn "Morning Has Broken", Mongo Santamaria's classic "Afro-Blue" and Cole Porter's immortal "Love for Sale". She also pays homage to jazz's Brazilian roots with her splendid, spirited readings of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Triste", a duet with guitarist Romero Lubambo, and Milton Nascimento's "Bridges". On her lyrical, midtempo "Come In", Reeves's cousin, keyboardist George Duke, turns in a brilliant solo, and "The First Five Chapters" is an autobiographical number inspired by author Portia Nelson. But the zenith of the set is "The Best Times (Grandma's Song)", her new version of her most requested song, "Better Days", which sings the praises and virtues of family values better than our politicians. -- Eugene Holley Jr Fragt: Ukendt! |

Chris Rea The Road to Hell & BackSe flere produkter fra AmazonFollowing prolonged bouts of ill health in recent years, Chris Rea's career has taken some radical turns. Most significant has been his decision to stop performing under the name Chris Rea and work as part of a band called The Fire Flies. The Road To Hell And Back is made up of performances from the subsequent farewell tour he played last year, and represents not only Rea's first live album but his last. Fortunately it captures this long-serving 'musician's musician' at his zenith. His shows at Warsaw Sala Kongresawa, The Brighton Centre and the Moscow Kremlin Palace have become stuff of legend among fans, and here his biggest hits are collected together with his high calibre recent recordings. Songs like "Jazee Blue", "Somewhere Between Highway 61 and 49", "Road To Hell", "On The Beach", "Let's Dance", "Julia" and "Stainsby Girls" are all played and sung with inevitable aplomb, but also with a surprising vitality for a man in his fifties with an ongoing illness and 25 years of industry experience behind him. A must for all serious fans. --Danny McKenna Fragt: Ukendt! |

Curtis Mayfield Superlfy Deluxe (UK issue)Se flere produkter fra AmazonThe term "classic" is tossed about a lot these days, and when it's being used to describe everything from Coke to a Janet Jackson CD, the term is shady. But take my word that the 1972 soundtrack to the blaxploitation film Superfly is a true classic. Why? Because 25 years after its release, the songs still ring true and sound fresh. A morality tale set to funky grooves and plaintive vocals, Superfly is the zenith of Mayfield's socially aware songwriting, recounting the highs and lows of the thug life and the no-win ghetto game of hustling. It's hard to believe, but a doom-filled ode to screwing up ("Freddie's Dead") was actually a big hit during the Nixon years. Truth be told, the record sounds as good, if not better today and should be in everyone's collection. --Amy Linden Fragt: Ukendt! |
