Blondie The Curse of BlondieSe flere produkter fra AmazonFronted by the fabulously glamorous Deborah Harry and mixing sultry dance with deceptively hard-hitting punk rock, Blondie were the pre-eminent pop band of their generation. With The Curse of Blondie, their first studio album in four years, they claim to have recaptured much of their former panache and, after hearing the first few tracks, you'd be hard pushed to disagree. The opening "Shake Down", shifting between shining pop and tough modern rock, sees Harry at her sassy sharpest, delivering a freaky, funny rap that takes us straight back to AutoAmerican. The sweet, heavily melodic "Good Boys" and "Undone" keep up the standard. The harsher urban rock of "Golden Rod" even raises it, but it's then that they run out of steam, for the next six tracks are clumsy and weak, characterised by stodgy production and silly studio chicanery rather than the inspired songwriting you'd expect. Thankfully, it all ends well. "The Last One on the Planet" has a tough metallic edge, while the sax-coloured "Desire Brings You Back" and "Songs of Love" recapture that New York sound and spirit. But you can't help feeling that if they'd kept the album as short and sweet as Eat to the Beat, we'd be hailing an unlikely and invigorating return to form. --Dominic Wills Fragt: Ukendt! |

Michael Jackson ThrillerSe flere produkter fra AmazonMichael Jackson's Thriller is the bestselling album of all time, with 45 million worldwide sales powered by eight Grammy Awards. The 1982 album was also a success from which the pop superstar never really recovered--subsequent albums seemed to have no other goal than to beat the records set by Thriller. The highly- polished sound of Quincy Jones's production sounds almost organic compared to Jackson's more recent work, and in the same regard, Thriller was significantly slicker than its predecessor, Off the Wall. Both albums established a Jackson style that aimed for the dance floor with songs built on a state-of-the-art bed of percussion and keyboards. Elements of milestone Thriller tracks like "Billie Jean" (arguably Jackson's best-ever performance) and "Beat It" (with its hard- rock solo by guitarist Eddie Van Halen) influenced not just Jackson's records, but those of the entire dance-pop world. On the song "Thriller", Jackson indulged his taste for the juvenile and invited Vincent Price to rap in a really scary voice. Various Artists Buddha Bar V (Mixed By David Visan)Se flere produkter fra AmazonIf any music could provide the perfect soundtrack to a global journey in search of spiritual enlightenment it would be Buddha Bar's chilled-out but slightly worthy world music. Buddha Bar Vol. 5 follows the same mood-enhancing vein of its predecessors, pulling in a cross-section of sundry global overtures and ethnic bric-a-brac to create a lifestyle accessory that's right up there with designer napkin holders. Fittingly, the two CDs are marked "Dinner" and "Drink", but it's hard to discern any real difference. Each contains the obligatory shower of Indian tablas, Moroccan percussion and mournful Romany strings that combine to create a cultural brew pleased with its own taste, but also oddly disorienting. Songs cross-pollinate all over the place, fusing the disparate vibes of gypsy Spain, Hindu carnival and medieval pageantry into one "organic" take-away. Sometimes it's head-noddingly agreeable stuff, especially when a flurry of tougher dance tracks weave their way through the ambience, but this is mostly "conscious" background music for graphic designers--borrowed style for maximum effect. -- Paul Tierney Fragt: Ukendt! |

Pendulum In SilicoSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn Silico might be the second album from Pendulum, but it's their first as a fully-fledged rock band. Of course, this Australian dance collective have paddled in these waters before: their debut album Hold Your Colour was a muscular collection of hard drum'n'bass and slamming breakbeats that, for all its synthetic construction, displayed firmly rock sensibilities. On In Silico, though, hard-riffing guitars are pulled right up in the mix, and the band's production core, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen, lead from the front, reaching for the microphone and making clattering loops the bedrock for a suite of anthemic rockers. Comparisons to the likes of Enter Shikari and The Prodigy are not too wide of the mark, capturing something of Pendulum's fairground waltzer adrenaline and polished, metallic aggression. Beyond straightforward rush, though, some interesting ingredients find their way into the brew: storming opener "Slowdown" imagines an unholy synthesis of DJ Hype and Muse in full progressive rock-out mode, while the elegiac "Propane Nightmares" commences with a Mariachi trumpet serenade. Dance connoisseurs will probably complain Pendulum's beats lack a certain finesse, but if you like your dance music a) fast and b) hard then In Silico has all bases covered. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Lester Young Ken Burns Jazz Collection: The Definitive Lester YoungSe flere produkter fra AmazonFirst coming to prominence with Count Basie's band in 1936, Lester Young found a new way to play tenor saxophone, using a soft, airy sound and an understated beat. In the process, he also created a new way to play jazz, developing a flowing, melodic inventiveness and a detachment that would influence the bop and cool schools to come. Young did much of his best work as a sideman in the first few years of his public career, and the first 13 tracks of this collection focus on his work up to 1940. Basie's hard-swinging big band was a terrific foil for Young's own novel blend of rhythmic invention and languid sound, heard here on tunes like "Taxi War Dance" and the uptempo "Twelfth Street Rag". With Basie's smaller Kansas City Seven, Young created masterpieces like his signature "Lester Leaps In". Young and his friend Billie Holiday shared an uncanny musical empathy, represented by four tracks here.
