Pixies PixiesSe flere produkter fra AmazonTruly, the anonymously eponymous title The Pixies immodestly disguises something worth trumpeting about. In March 1987, the now seminal but then unknown combo recorded some 18 demos at Fort Apache studios in Boston, Massachusetts under the watchful eye of producer Gary Smith, a local alternative-music obsessive who had previously been responsible for producing the first professional demos for Throwing Muses. These recordings formed what is commonly referred to in under-the-counter fan circles as "The Purple Tape", essentially a showcase recording circulated to interested parties in the music business, including 4AD label boss Ivo Watts who duly signed the band and released eight of the tape's tracks as the Pixies' official mini-album debut Come On Pilgrim. This album, then, features the nine remaining and hitherto legally-unavailable songs (a tenth, "Watch What You're Doin'" remains unheard and safely tucked away under producer Gary Smith's proverbial mattress) and is notable not only for offering less abrasive renditions of songs which later wound up (literally so, given Steve Albini's edgier production touch ) on Surfer Rosa but also a studio cover version of "In Heaven" (originally from the film Eraserhead), an earlier, milder working of Doolittle's prime pop moment "Here Comes Your Man" and the previously unreleased gem "Rock a My Soul". It's often the case that early demos provide a snapshot of a band's creative genesis but here are the Pixies--Black Francis's jeepers-creepers vocals and the trademark surf-gone-trash-horror narratives of theophobia, familial perversion and grisly personal injury--in fully grown glory. Cash, in his mid-20s but sounding several hundred years older, had by now established the distinctive boom-chicka-boom sound from which he has hardly deviated since. The Fabulous Johnny Cash, though it contains nothing so well remembered as such Sun-era hits as "Folsom Prison Blues" or "I Walk The Line", is nigh faultless: the arrangements are as spare as Cash's voice is rich, and the songs are great. Cash's "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" and "I Still Miss Someone" sit well alongside a few well-chosen covers of contemporary writers' songs. Songs Of Our Soil is an early example of Cash's fondness for the concept album, intended to evoke the realities--with which he was well acquainted--of life on the land. It serves mostly as an engaging curio, including a version of "I Want To Go Home" (the Caribbean work song later turned into "Sloop John B" by the Beach Boys), and "Old Apache Squaw", a Cash original demonstrating the beginnings of a long-standing interest in Native American affairs; though the word "squaw" is now filed alongside other unmentionable racial epithets, at least he was trying. -- Andrew Mueller Fragt: Ukendt! |

The first was 1998s Dancing Drums. And while it was a potent amalgamation of percussive Asian breakbeats and club-carved basslines, the new endeavour takes an altogether broader and deeper approach. Starting with the spiritual title track (the lyrics--performed by Original Nuttah UK Apache--are a metaphor for life itself), the album proceeds to unwind in many unexpected directions. Although cuts such as "Swarm", "Tribal" and "Get Up" see the duo revert back to the dancefloor vibes of "Dancin" Drums', the rest of the album delves into moments of beatless bliss and windswept beauty. These tracks--"Mountain Path", "Day by Day", "Soaring Beyond", "Sajanaa" and "The Last Mile" are infused with Eastern instrumentation and feature vocal contributions from Sanchita Farruque, Sanjogita Kumari and Mercury Prize nominee Kathryn Williams. Ja Rule Pain Is LoveSe flere produkter fra AmazonLike rapper DMX, Ja Rule's scratchy vocal delivery is an acquired taste. But given the success of his Lil' Mo-aided hits "Put It on Me" and "I Cry," it's no surprise that Pain Is Love follows the same formula as its predecessor, as mid-tempo grooves mix with thugged-out beats and rhymes. On "Lost Little Girl," a coming-of-age tale that charts the struggles of an urban hottie, Rule's gift for story telling shines bright. While "I'm Real (Murder Remix)," featuring Jennifer Lopez, is almost worth the purchase price alone, one must conclude that Rule is best appreciated in small doses. On "So Much Pain" Rule apes 2Pac's flow, rhyme patterns and introspection to an annoying extent. Likewise, "Down Ass Bitch" sadly sounds like another thematic take-off on Apache's "Gangsta Bitch" anthem. At least "Livin' It Up" doesn't bastardise Stevie Wonder's gem "Do I Do" too much, and the beats cooked up on "Pain Is Love" and the guitar-fuelled "Always on Time" save this release from losing all of those cool points he's earned for being a great writer.
