Primal Scream Beautiful FutureSe flere produkter fra AmazonBeautiful Future--a hopelessly optimistic moniker for their ninth album, no matter which way you approach it, since Primal Scream are almost universally accepted to have strutted past their zenith around the same time they helpfully mislaid their vowels (on 2000's unrelentingly anarchic Xtrmntr). To claim any future, especially after the all-too-brief successes of 2006's turgid Riot City Blues, let alone a handsome one is foolhardy to say the least. But, you see, they're actually being cuttingly sarcastic, or so we ascertain from Bobby Gillespie's ham-fisted sloganeering on the title track's tirade against modern ills ("you live by the sword, you die by the sword, you're only free to buy things you can't afford", etc.). If anything in particular is exposed as a spent force here it is he and his pen, sense disregarded to the point of parody, words drifting like flotsam amid the band's systematic attempts to reinvent themselves. The small miracle is that they just about manage. "Beautiful Future" leads into the album with a curious and eventually overwhelming infectiousness, gleaming like CSS delivering a Shirelles pastiche complete with cheesy bell-ringing and an effeminate vocal delivery that almost clouds over the lyrical content. "I Love to Hurt (You Love to Be Hurt)" actually features CSS's Lovefoxx as this album's Kate Moss and holds its own with some minimalist malevolence. As an album it jerks and it stumbles, lacking a definitive identity, but it at least ensures they'll live to see another day. A future of some sort is assured. --James Berry Fragt: Ukendt! |

Pal Joey [1957]Se flere produkter fra AmazonFirst born in the pages of The New Yorker, then translated into a hit Rodgers and Hart Broadway musical, the title character of Pal Joey had undergone quite a transformation by the time he hit the movies in 1957. He was a singer, rather than a dancer, but more importantly he'd had his rough edges sweetly softened; the callous heel dreamed up by novelist John O'Hara was more of a naughty scamp in the film version. However, Pal Joey remains delightfully watchable for two very good reasons: a terrific song score and a surplus of glittering star power. Frank Sinatra, at the zenith of his cocky, world-on-a-string popularity, glides through the film with breezy nonchalance, romancing showgirl Kim Novak (Columbia Pictures' new sex symbol) and wealthy widow Rita Hayworth (Columbia Pictures' former sex symbol). The film also benefits from location shooting in San Francisco, caught in the moonlight-and-supper-club glow of the late 50s. Sinatra does beautifully with the Rodgers and Hart classics "I Didn't Know What Time It Was" and "I Could Write a Book" and his performance of "The Lady Is a Tramp" (evocatively shot by director George Sidney) is flat-out genius. Sinatra's ease with hep-cat lingo nearly outdoes Bing Crosby at his best, and included in the DVD is a trailer in which Sinatra instructs the audience in "Joey's Jargon", a collection of hip slang words such as "gasser" and "mouse." If not one of Sinatra's very best movies, Pal Joey is nevertheless a classy vehicle that fits like a glove. --Robert Horton Fragt: Ukendt! |

Alan Jackson DriveSe flere produkter fra AmazonHe sings straight, writes songs without a half dozen Music Row hacks pitching in their two cents and keeps the music basic. On Drive, Jackson mixes wistful visions with satire, sorrow and eloquence, using old cars ("Drive (For Daddy Gene)") to explore growing up and, on "Work In Progress", spoofing a woman obsessed with "improving" her man. As usual, he explores love's joy ("When Love Comes Around") and anguish ("The Sounds"). His flair for thoughtful, evocative expression reaches its zenith with his classic 9-11 commentary "Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)", included in both the studio version and the song's live debut on the CMA Awards. Non-originals, including the Mark Irwin-Irene Kelley tune "A Little Bluer Than That", fit the album's tone. "Designated Drinker", a duet with George Strait, is a pleasant vocal event, though it's rendered mundane by the quality of the other material. Yet again, Jackson zaps Nashville's fallacy that any recipe for success requires generous helpings of dated pop and rock. --Rich Kienzle Fragt: Ukendt! |

2Pac Better DayzSe flere produkter fra AmazonBetter Dayz appears six years after 2pac's death. During that time his estate has released a dizzying array of questionable posthumous material--with much more to come in 2003, by the way. (The liner notes list documentary soundtracks, another unreleased double album, DVDs etc.) On the first disc's "Intro" an unnamed street reporter wonders "Where are these songs coming from?" After repeated listens, your best guess would be from his unfinished studio outtake reels. Nevertheless, these tracks were apparently recorded during his prolific and vexed Makaveli stage. "When We Ride on Our Enemies" demonstrates much vitriol, as Pac's verses are littered with fightin' words for rappers like Mobb Deep and Da Brat. Likewise, "F*** Em All" hurls threats to the late Notorious B.I.G., reminding fans of the time when media-induced East Coast/West Coast feuds were way out of control. The ghetto Elvis's tales of slum grandeur reach their zenith when he serves up his explicit boasts to women on "Fair Exchange". Gripping. It's too bad the last track on disc one, an acoustic version of "Thugz Mansion", undermines much of the credibility of this project. When the vocals of Pac's alleged enemy Nas are mixed in to appear like he's sitting next to Pac by a fireplace, all warm and toasty and sharing rhymes, you immediately smell the influence of executive producer Suge Knight. The second disc is just as dodgy, but might resonate more with new fans simply wanting to hear good beats and rhymes. "Never Call U B**** Again" is a tidy love song that R&B crooner Tyrese complements well, while the title track guesting Ronald "Mr. Biggs" Isley provides a necessary escape from much of Pac's brooding imagery. In the end, the quandary of this double disc has nothing to with Pac but with the middling G-funk-lite beats of producer Johnny "J" and the involvement of Suge Knight. This one's for collectors and curious onlookers. -- Dalton Higgins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Kings Of Leon Because of the TimesSe flere produkter fra AmazonAha Shake Heartbreak may have blown open the doors of fame for Kings of Leon, but their third full-length album (named for a United Pentecostal Church ministers' conference) could well usher the Nashville foursome directly to rock and roll's zenith. There's hardly a change in plans for the three Followill brothers and their cousin, and that means producer Ethan Johns, a smorgasbord of musical influences, and a cacophonous ensemble of guitar, bass, and drums. A trio of relentless rockers--"My Party," "Camaro," and the sarcastic "Charmer"--are sure to pacify those familiar with the Kings' blueprint, yet there is ripening in the band's approach heard, in several of the record's 13 songs. Reverb guitar and vocals and a "woo woo" chorus add a sinister aspect to "Trunk," and "Knocked Up" features a laissez-faire Caleb Followill crooning "She don't care what her mama said/She's gonna have my baby." The seven-minute revelation of fatherhood that opens the album leads into the U2-influenced "McFearless," a reggae-splashed "Ragoo," and the rambling English blues of "Black Thumbnail." It's a rogue element that has always left every record fresh, and this time it has Kings of Leon teetering on the edge of rock renown. --Scott Holter Fragt: Ukendt! |

Calexico Garden RuinSe flere produkter fra AmazonNever settling for one musical style, always searching for new ways to combine their jazz, desert-rock, Mariachi and dub influences, Tucson outfit Calexico have taken joyous quantum leaps, jumping from low-key, marmalade-coloured vignettes (their debut album Spoke) to more vivid palettes on LPs such as Hot Rail. Garden Ruins represents the band's most populist statement yet. Assembled during and after their superlative collaboration with Iron & Wine ( In The Reins) and a high profile tour with Wilco, the project connects with a wider musical picture--that of the classic American songbook. The band avoid conjuring the busual Southwestern vistas in favour of more direct (and less exotic) styles like pop, rock and folk. It could have all been so terrible but in fact it's one of the best decisions the band ever made: from the easy-going lope of "Lucky Dime" to the bombastic thrusts of "Letter To Bowie Knife" and "All Systems Red", Garden Ruin is hugely palatable (not to mention surprisingly political), marking yet another zenith for Tucson's most sonically nomadic sons. -- Paul Sullivan Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tribe Called Quest People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of RhythmSe flere produkter fra AmazonPeople's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm is, quite simply, one of the finest albums in hip-hop. It's easy to argue that A Tribe Called Quest reached their zenith on this, their debut album: though they went on to produce another world-class disc ( The Low End Theory) and broadened their palates and their consciousness, never again were they quite this naturally free and easy. Q-Tip and Phife's delivery is deceptively simple, flowing like wine and tasting like candy, and Jairobi adds some contrast. The music, so self-assured that it never raises its voice to make a spectacle, follows suit. Four albums later, on their last tour, songs from Paths of Rhythm still were at the top of the set list. --Randy Silver Fragt: Ukendt! |
