Ja Rule Pain Is LoveSe flere produkter fra AmazonLike rapper DMX, Ja Rule's scratchy vocal delivery is an acquired taste. But given the success of his Lil' Mo-aided hits "Put It on Me" and "I Cry," it's no surprise that Pain Is Love follows the same formula as its predecessor, as mid-tempo grooves mix with thugged-out beats and rhymes. On "Lost Little Girl," a coming-of-age tale that charts the struggles of an urban hottie, Rule's gift for story telling shines bright. While "I'm Real (Murder Remix)," featuring Jennifer Lopez, is almost worth the purchase price alone, one must conclude that Rule is best appreciated in small doses. On "So Much Pain" Rule apes 2Pac's flow, rhyme patterns and introspection to an annoying extent. Likewise, "Down Ass Bitch" sadly sounds like another thematic take-off on Apache's "Gangsta Bitch" anthem. At least "Livin' It Up" doesn't bastardise Stevie Wonder's gem "Do I Do" too much, and the beats cooked up on "Pain Is Love" and the guitar-fuelled "Always on Time" save this release from losing all of those cool points he's earned for being a great writer. The first was 1998s Dancing Drums. And while it was a potent amalgamation of percussive Asian breakbeats and club-carved basslines, the new endeavour takes an altogether broader and deeper approach. Starting with the spiritual title track (the lyrics--performed by Original Nuttah UK Apache--are a metaphor for life itself), the album proceeds to unwind in many unexpected directions. Although cuts such as "Swarm", "Tribal" and "Get Up" see the duo revert back to the dancefloor vibes of "Dancin" Drums', the rest of the album delves into moments of beatless bliss and windswept beauty. These tracks--"Mountain Path", "Day by Day", "Soaring Beyond", "Sajanaa" and "The Last Mile" are infused with Eastern instrumentation and feature vocal contributions from Sanchita Farruque, Sanjogita Kumari and Mercury Prize nominee Kathryn Williams. Hexstatic Solid Steel Presents Hexstatic: Listen & LearnSe flere produkter fra AmazonNinja Tune's Hexstatic are best known as VJs--practitioners of a visual mixing technique that blends and segues images in the same manner that DJ mixes records--but on Listen & Learn, they've made a truly clever, and largely entertaining audio mix that blends apparently disparate musical forms into one coherent whole. Listen & Learn is built on a bedrock of old-skool breaks, feel-good hip-hop, and scratch culture, but it's by no means in thrall to the spirit of the Bronx block parties of decades past. Rather, Hexstatic use this funky, flexible base as a springboard into a chaotic sea of garbled electronica, rare groove, and classic-track bootleg mischief. It's fast-moving: in the space of ten minutes, Hexstatic have dropped a joint of bass-heavy junglism courtesy of DJ Food, lurched into a old-skool scratch lesson narrated by some posh English gentlemen, tarried a while on the mean streets of Grandmaster Flash's "The Message", and segued neatly into the brass-laden hip-shaker of Ike and Tina Turner's "Funky Mule". Elsewhere, there's a neatly tampered take on Boards of Canada's "Aquarius", an oddly beautiful Nightmares on Wax remix of Shirley Bassey, and an indisputable breakbeat classic in the shape of the Incredible Bongo Band's "Apache". -- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |
