Madonna American Life [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonHaving reinvented herself for the umpteenth time on her last album of jittery electronic effects and shuffling beats, American Life, finds the Queen of Pop in familiar territory and in a self-obsessed mood. Keeping with the Music formula and utilising the talent of French production-wizard Mirwais Ahmadzai has resulted in an album rich in delightful digital disco rhythms, exuberant electro and shattered beats. In the main, Mirwais' magic makes for spellbinding music; unfortunate then that the 44-year-old mum's self indulgent ramblings induce a less pleasurable stupor. The single "American Life" swaggers along with a jaunty cyber strut, while Madge offers us a witty lyrical dismantling of fame and the attendant somewhat soulless "luxuries". It's hard too feel too much sympathy though and her incessant first-person references (nearly 350 of them) begin to grate even before she announces "I am so stupid 'cause I used to be in a fuzzy dream". As well as sarcastic attacks on the fame machine she has so cleverly oiled during her 21-year tenure as music's monarch, Madge is quick to defend her relationship with a sprinkling of odes to current squeeze Guy Ritchie. Subtle and tender acoustic-based moments such as "X-Static Process" and "Nothing Fails" and the string-led beauty of "Easy Ride" add variety while truculent tracks such as "Hollywood" make for a mixed bag, but one that certainly swings in style. -- Christopher Barrett Fragt: Ukendt! |

Crowded House Farewell to the World: Live at Sydney Opera HouseSe flere produkter fra AmazonOh, the title wasn't quite as apocalyptic as all that: after Farewell To The World, their final concert together as Crowded House, New Zealand brothers Neil and Tim Finn continued to make music, sometimes even together as The Finn Brothers. For fans, though, this 24-song set -- recorded at the Sydney Opera House in front of 100,000 people -- should stand head and shoulders above the band's extensive back catalogue of bootleg live recordings. The hits, as you might expect, are present -- "Four Seasons In One Day", "Fall At Your Feet", and what's perhaps the group's finest moment, a kaleidoscopic "Pineapple Head". (Less expected is a bit of X-rated onstage banter, which finds drummer Paul Hester claiming to have "deposited a bit of sperm in Sydney town from time to time" -- nice!). Elsewhere, the band show off their admirable chops, "Hole In The River" branching off into the sort of jazzy, prog-tinged instrumental break that'd shame most jam bands. An all-too-short deadline is also imposed on Dylan's Commonwealth dream (confirming the show's additional two-series renewal), when it's confirmed how long it will be before the travelling Magog arrive. "Exit Strategies" is all about inner demons. Poor Harper is left with a very real internal problem that leads him to contemplate the unthinkable. Rommie is wrestling with an alternate physical self. Rev is battling his religious conscience against his very survival. With so much B-plot, you could almost overlook the main story that sees the Maru crash land on an ice world--if the dazzling FX would let you that is. Beka gets an overdue share of romantic attention in "A Heart for Falsehood Framed". A sacred gem is the nub of a diplomatic dispute. In typically unpredictable fashion, the plot contrives to see all interested parties caught up in a multi-layered game of switching fakes. Some new angles appear in "Pitiless as the Sun". In case anyone's forgotten, Trance is given opportunity to thicken the mystery surrounding exactly what she is. This occurs as we meet a brand-new adversary, the unsavoury Pyrians. Xenophobia, drug addiction and slavery are all scrutinised in this episode--enough plot for an X-File. This is funny since Cigarette-Smoking Man William B Davis guest stars. Hunting for a once-glorious leader who would benefit Dylan's cause, the Maru and crew make a "Last Call at the Broken Hammer", a run-down bar in the middle of a wasteland. There are lots of twists in a mystery of hidden identities and agendas amongst the bar's patrons. Watch out for Gordon Woolvett's real-life wife among them. Another welcome sight i Fragt: Ukendt! |

The tone is set early on when the narrator notes, "In Africa they have the saying: 'It takes a village to raise a child.' But for the tribe of the Upper Eastside of Manhattan, it takes just one person: the nanny." Recent college graduate Annie Braddock (a brunette Scarlett Johansson) becomes the nanny for Mr. and Mrs. X, a narcissistic and selfish couple who have no clue that what their precocious son Grayer really needs is a mum and a dad who will pay attention to him. At first, Annie can't believe her good fortune. Caring for Grayer a few hours each day in the X's luxurious apartment seems like a dream job. But as her job turns into a 24/7 nightmare, she loses her identity and becomes Nanny. Annie's attempts to befriend her oddly charismatic boss are met with rebuffs by Mrs. X (Laura Linney). When Annie mentions her home life, Mrs. X is stunned. "Nanny, you never mentioned you had a mother," she says, as if she expected that nannies were shot out of giant pods. Despite the film's flaws, Linney is a standout. Like Meryl Streep, who made an unlikeable character sympathetic in The Devils Wears Prada, Linney brings humour to her role. Unfortunately, Paul Giamatti (as the philandering Mr. X) and singer Alicia Keys (as Annie's best friend Lynette) are wasted in their thankless roles. While we are meant to feel sorry for Annie, we are left wondering why a beautiful and educated young woman would allow herself to be manipulated into working ridiculous hours for less than minimum-wage pay.
