Does any DJ listen to more music than John Digweed? Hard to say, but the fact that Diggers is known to go through all the music he receives, personally, may have something to do with why he has--perhaps wisely--elected to release a single Transitions disc twice a year (instead of the two-disc compilations that seem to be the norm for other DJs). Not only does this give listeners a snapshot of his ever-evolving mixes, it allows him to capitalize on the fact that, as one of the biggest names in the business, he has access to all sorts of exclusives and upfront tracks, such as Guy Gerber's remix of "Dana," a glowing spellbinder that has yet to be released. On its heels comes Antena's portentous "Camino del Sol (Joakim Mix)," which promises an inescapable hook from the first appearance of its chunky synths, itself followed by the ultra-refined shadow play of Williams's "The Shivering (Pitch and Hold in Camera Obscura Remix)." Digweed obviously understands better than anyone that the impact of each track is largely determined by how it relates to all the others. As always, his programming can leave listeners dumbfounded; tracks like David K's off-kilter minimal trip "Boul de Nerf" may lead to some initial head-scratching. But then there is that rule of thumb that never fails with Digweed: "listen again." --Brent Kallmer

"I may be hungry, but I sure ain't weird," Don Van Vliet, a.k.a. Captain Beefheart, famously intones on this bright-sounding re-mastered version of the 1967 debut by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band. Safe as Milk is a bold, tough-ass distillation of Delta blues stomp and 1960s garage-punk swagger, fused with a radically polyrhythmic and tempo-shifting style that one might term "art rock". Listening to the delightfully playful, absurdist "Abba Zabba", it's easy to see why Lester Bangs called Beefheart "the only true dadaist in rock"; the song is a good indication of the intricate, rule-breaking music the Magic Band would continue to hone. But there are also formidable ballads (the psychedelic "Autumn's Child", the lachrymose "I'm Glad"), mid-tempo pop-soul tunes (the Otis Redding-ish "Call on Me"), and straight-ahead blues-rock workouts ("Plastic Factory"), all of which showcase the fretwork of a young Ry Cooder. Much has been made of Beefheart's multiple-octave vocal range; he sings menacingly on "Dropout Boogie" and allegedly broke a very expensive microphone on the eerie "Electricity". The last seven tracks on this reissue (for the most part fascinating, unfinished instrumentals) were recorded with a different line-up; they are outtakes from Mirror Man Sessions. --Mike McGonigal

A lot has happened between the release of Just Jack's first album and his second album, Overtones. When The Outer Marker debuted in 2002, it was overshadowed by The Streets' first album, Original Pirate Material. Now, though, Just Jack, a.k.a. Jack Allsop, is getting some long-deserved recognition. There are, after all, strong similarities between Just Jack and The Streets' Mike Skinner. Both artists have an ultra-laid-back and laconic delivery style, and both are quintessentially English in sound and subject material. However, where Skinner has made his reputation for his witticisms and cheeky observations, Just Jack is far more serious-minded. His observations are of a different world than the council estates of Skinner' lyrics. Instead, Just Jack spins tales of middle class ennui ("Lost"), an inability to communicate with his girlfriend ("I Talk Too Much"), or the loss of his youth ("Hold On"). But it's not all gloominess here: "Glory Days" skips along with a summery jaunty beat and a bright brass break that perfectly depicts the elation that comes after a period of depression. Like Just Jack himself, Overtones is mature and thoughtful, proving that hip hop need not necessarily be by, for or about kids. --Ted Kord

What could be more sublime than a wall of dark, rotund Russian voices shimmering against the rising, ornate walls of a great cathedral? Not much, and this compilation of absolutely magnificent music proves it. The label Hearts of Space returns on this third choral collection to the ominous Slavic chant of their first choral album, Sacred Treasures I, which gathered together recordings of stunning Bulgarian and Russian choirs portraying the sacred works of Rachmaninov, Tchaikovsky, and other composers. Whereas Treasures I pulled from varied sections of sacred liturgies, including solo passages, Treasures III most often stays in harmonic chant with select voices occasionally rising and rolling in polyphonic heavenly calls. The collective voice draws the emotive tension taut here, as on Rimsky-Korsakov's "Our Father," which uses the absence of darkness to later juxtapose bold, rising drama. The Kiev chant "Blessed Art Thou O Lord" sends chills down the spine as the whispering consonants of the Russian language skip across the ancient repetition like sand skitters over a stormy beach. This is a collection as breathtakingly beautiful as the Cathedral of the Dormition itself. Not to be missed. --Karen K. Hugg

In theory, there was no reason why Frank Black, a.k.a. Black Francis, shouldn't have carried on making great records after he left the Pixies; after all, he wrote and sang almost all the songs. However, all truly great bands are more than the sum of their parts, and Black's solo career has served largely as a resounding confirmation of this truth. He has had his moments, but has never come close to the towering heights he scaled with his old band. Perhaps by way of grudgingly acknowledging this, Dog In The Sand finds Black enlisting Pixies' guitarist Joey Santiago for the first time in his solo career. Santiago, a dazzlingly inventive and versatile player, has been bewilderingly quiet since leaving the Pixies, and seems keen to make up for it here, deploying his full formidable range at various points. His contribution to what is certainly Black's best solo album is crucial, from the frenetic powerchords of "If It Takes All Night" to the subtle picking of "Robert Onion" to the exuberant solo of "Bullet". Now, if Black can only persuade Kim Deal and David Lovering to come out of retirement as well, he might really be onto something. -- Andrew Mueller

While it owes much of its appeal and appearance to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Eragon can stand on its own as an enjoyable fantasy for younger viewers. Faithfully adapted from the bestselling novel by teenage author Christopher Paolini, this boy-and-his-dragon tale offers clean, fast-paced family entertainment without compromising the darker qualities of Paolini's novel (the first in what is known as the "Inheritance" trilogy). The plot centers on 17-year-old peasant farmboy Eragon (played by appealing newcomer Ed Speleers) who discovers a mysterious blue object that turns out to be an egg that eventually hatches to reveal Saphira, a blue-scaled dragon that quickly grows to full-size. According to prophecy, Eragon is destined to be a dragon-rider like those who once protected a benevolent kingdom, thus reviving an ancient conflict against the army of King Galbatorix (John Malkovich), a former dragon rider who turned to evil, now in alliance with a dark-magic "Shade" sorcerer named Durza (Robert Carlyle). While the movie serves up familiar fantasy elements and offers little if anything new to fans of the genre (or anyone who's read the books of Anne McCaffrey and Ursula K. Le Guin), it's visually impressive (especially the dragon scenes, with Rachel Weisz providing the telepathic "voice" of Saphira) and full of timeless wisdom, much of it delivered by Eragon's heroic mentor Brom (Jeremy Irons), himself a former dragon rider with memories of past battles and hope for Eragon's future. Add a fair warrior-maiden named Arya (Sienna Guillory) and you've got all the ingredients for a worthwhile (if not particularly original) fantasy that points directly to a sequel. Whether that's a good or a bad thing is up to individual viewers to decide. --Jeff Shannon

Nu-metal might well have been the movement that we should thank for flushing out a lot of rock's hoarier old clichés. With the rock'n'roll ranks beginning to resemble a US Marines roll-call of bulging biceps and close haircuts, it's of some comfort that the self-titled release from Los Angeles four-piece Boy Hits Car is able to reconcile the savage in-your-face razor-edge of Papa Roach while still drawing inspiration from alternative music's more flamboyant side. Here, on their second album, there's some pleasantly contrary moments: see the opening "The Rebirth", a stark memory of the ornate Eastern instrumentation that embellished the Screaming Trees' Dust. There's also the wild hippy evocations of "As I Watch The Sun F**k The Ocean" that recall the sorely missed Jane's Addiction. Sure, it doesn't always work quite to plan--see front man CRegg's slightly gauche lyric to "Going To India" ("Going to India/ Watch all the elephants"). But the bit-of-this, bit-of-that musical dynamic works surprisingly smoothly throughout, with rolls of heavy riffage breaking over flutes, bongos, and tablas to surprisingly proficient effect. Boy Hits Car might be a little too off-centre to topple Papa Roach from their perch at nu-metal's zenith, but this fine record is a reminder that an alternative take on a genre can sometimes restore your faith in the definite article itself. -- Louis Pattison

This Deluxe Edition includes a bonus CD of demos, alternate versions and remixes. DJ Shadow, a.k.a. Josh Davis, could be credited with bringing newfound introspection to the gloating sounds of hip-hop. Condensed with urban oscillations and scatological beats, Endtroducing... shutters with eclectic samples and aural montages that reach beyond the constraints of hip-hop style. Enhancing the mix with fundamentals of rock, soul, funk, ambient, and jazz, the modern fusions fail to go unnoticed, even by the casual listener. While most of the tracks are compiled by layering samples from vinyl treasures found in used-record bins, the production quality of the mosaic is unmatched. Darkened melodies carry throughout the album with its eye on the end of the tunnel. The narration samples come from numerous sources and keep the listener involved and waiting for resolution. With a message as fragmentary as an overheard conversation, Endtroducing... conveys no apparent conclusion, but begs the mind, body, and soul for some rewind. --Lucas Hilbert

Though the Charlie Chan film franchise has earned brickbats for its casting of Caucasian actors as the Asian sleuth, the movies have retained popularity among aficionados of '40s-era B-crime pictures, and the six-disc Charlie Chan Chanthology, all featuring Sidney Toler as Chan, should please that crowd. The Missouri-born Toler starred in 11 Chan pictures for Fox before purchasing the rights to the character from creator Earl Derr Biggers's widow and bringing it to budget studio Monogram, where he starred in 11 more Chans before his death in 1947 (Roland Winters replaced him in six more features until 1949). At Monogram, Chan became a Secret Service Agent (a move calculated to cut down on exotic locations and sets), and comedy was integrated into the plots via Mantan Moreland's chauffeur Birmingham Brown; Benson Fong also joined the cast as Number Three Son Tommy, with occasional appearances by daughter Frances (Frances Chan) and son Eddie (Edwin Luke, brother of Keye Luke, who played Number One Son Lee in the Fox Chans). Other than that, the six films collected here (the first six Chans for Monogram, and all but five directed by Phil Rosen) are largely indistinguishable from one another save for the murder victims and their demises. In The Secret Service, Chan investigates the death of a wartime inventor; a San Francisco socialite expires in The Chinese Cat; daughter Frances is involved in the murder of a psychic in Meeting at Midnight (a.k.a. Black Magic); another government scientist is killed in The Jade Mask, and death by remote control is the focus of The Scarlet Clue. Director Phil Karlson ( Kansas City Confidential) adds some noirish atmosphere to The Shanghai Cobra, which has bank employees dying from apparent snakebites. Dated and controversial as they may be, the Chan films are engaging diversions for vintage mystery fans. No extras are featured in the set. --Paul Gaita

Another of the Notorious B.I.G's women--Lil' Kim comes into her own with Hard Core, perhaps the most explicitly pornographic album ever made by a woman. With the possible exception of soulmate Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim is the hardest woman in R&B. Sexual over and undertones abound with songs like 'Take it!', and the album features the usual handful of guest appearances, including the now-late Biggy Smalls and members of her former band Junior Mafia. Production chores are handled by the hottest kids on the block: Sean Combs--a.k.a Puff Daddy, Badboy second-in-command Stevie J. and SoSoDef supremo Jermaine Dupri. With the rudest introduction and interlude sections ever recorded, the album features the single "Crush On You" (not to be confused with the Jets/Aaron Carter) which is confusing since Li'l Kim's only contribution to this track seems to be intermittently moaning the word "true". Incidentally, the album's cover is stolen more regularly than any other from London's largest chain of second hand record shops, although what this says about the music is perhaps open to question. --Ronita Dutta

Most have agreed that the BBC's decision to revive Doctor Who has proven inspired, with the Christopher Ecclestone-led 'first' series proving a critical and ratings success. Yet when Ecclestone announced he was departing the role after just one season, eyebrows were raised. Could the momentum be kept going for a second series? Absolutely. The seamless casting of David Tennant as Ecclestone's successor in the TARDIS has been equally inspired, and while it's a fair debate as to whether he matches the standards set by his predecessor, the show rarely lets you draw breath to think about it. This second series collection kicks off with the 2005 Christmas special, which finds the Doctor struggling to overcome the effects of his regeneration, just as the Earth happens to be being invaded. It's a smashing episode, and many of the thirteen that follow manage to match it. Particular highlights? There's "School Reunion", which cleverly works old favourites K-9 and Sarah-Jane back into the mix, while "The Girl In The Fireplace" finds the Doctor in a slightly more romantic frame, "The Idiot's Lantern" is a super, snappy episode set just before Coronation Day, while the two-part "Impossible Planet" and "Satan Pit" shows just how far you can stretch a BBC budget. Yet the series will ultimately be remembered for different reasons. The triumphant return for the Cybermen for one, and the depature of Billie Piper's Rose Tyler in the superb final two-parter, which also happens to see two of the Doctor's deadliest foes waging war. And while it's not unfair to say that this series of Doctor Who hasn't been without one or two low moments too, the vast majority of it has been really quite brilliant. Fast, energetic, well-written and cracking entertainment, you're only left wondering how they can top all this next time roundÂ… -- Simon Brew

These eloquent artists' earlier DG pairing of Dvorák's third and seventh symphonies really stood out from the crowd; if anything, though, this new release is even more impressive. First-rate recordings of the sixth symphony (a truly life-enhancing work--why do we scarcely ever hear it in the concert hall?) are not hard to find; Karel Ancerl (Supraphon), Rafael Kubelik (DG) and Witold Rowicki (Philips Duo) are all at their formidable best in this glorious score. Even so, Myung-Whun Chung and the Vienna PO are not out of place in such august company. The Korean maestro directs proceedings with an enviable sureness of purpose, quick-witted flexibility and interpretative charisma that genuinely excite (be warned, the "Furiant" scherzo goes like the wind). What's more, the VPO responds with its customary poise, sensitivity and (most crucially) all the freshness of new discovery--an observation which extends to the generous coupling here. Once again, pungent characterisation is very much the order of the day, and there are countless insights along the way (the third movement's miniature coda positively winks at you!). Along with Harnoncourt's superb Teldec version, Chung's is as stimulating a view of the eighth as we've had in some considerable time. Big, bold sonics. A distinguished coupling, in sum, and not to be missed.-- Andrew Achenbach

As a member of the acclaimed Animal Collective, Noah Lennox (a.k.a. Panda Bear) has for years been making music that mixes experimental structures with a pure '60s pop sensibility. On his second solo album of looped and layered experimental post-pop, he shows considerable skill in crafting songs that retain the essence of psychedelia while having been crafted with loop-based home recording methods. The album's finest moment has to be "Bros," a slowly percolating and unapologetically lovely twelve-and-a-half-minute song. Like Brian Wilson lost in a K-hole, gorgeous harmonies soaked in echo bump up against each other until they reach a rhythmic, fascinating crescendo. Elsewhere, Panda Bear's music tends toward the same effect a tad too much, often without the same transcendent quality. Person Pitch has fabulous moments aplenty, though (as with Captain Beefheart's 1968 Strictly Personal) one does wish that fewer reverb-soaked vocals were used, or that they were used even further, pushed into complete abstract dissociation. --Mike McGonigal

Like all three of Ian Brown's solo albums, Remixes of the Spheres, from 2001's Music of the Spheres, would be a work of genius were it not for the all the niggling imperfections. In among the genuine remixes, the scraped together fillers--former Japan-only track "Superstar", the live version of "El Mundo Pequeno"--are easy to spot. And it's impossible not to question the wisdom of including three instrumentals, when Brown's trump card is always his deadpan, pseudo-spiritual ramblings. Yet, as is Brown's way, when it's good, it's exceptional. In the hands of Nightmares on Wax, "The Gravy Train"--Brown's sulky dismissal of the vacuous lifestyles of the rich and famous--slopes to a seedy slouch that heightens his disdain. Cedar Blue's clicks, bleeps and backwards loop elevate "Forever and a Day" to a zero gravity lullaby that Air would be proud of and under Freelance Hell Raiser the sketchy "Northern Lights" becomes a fully formed ode to love with a sci-fi punk twist. Ultimately though, it's the standout from Music of the Spheres, "F.E.A.R", that's the main prize. Outstripping anything else James Lavelle's U.N.K.L.E have done in recent memory, this recasting of the acronym mantra as a Clubbed-to-Death-style epic of driving beats and majestically melancholic strings is second only to the original. And that was indeed an unequivocal work of genius. -- Dan Gennoe

The world of Si Begg--the twisted intelligence behind pop-art pseudonym SI Futures and their Mission Statement--is a weird, but disorientating one indeed. Last we saw him, he was declaring The Complete Death of Cool on a deranged, jabbering mix compilation that consisted mostly of his own work, segueing mutant jazz, savant hip-hop and general scatology into an impressively mad whole. The Mission Statement is a (marginally) less complicated beast: presented, with requisite sense of crushing faux-dullness, as a business conference, the tracks are divided into rooms, suites and lounges: so, in the Green Room we find "This Is the Way", Mouse on Mars-style quirky techno replete with snatches of distortion-heavy guitar feedback; in Alexandra Suite One, the whooping, Squarepusher-style sequencer meltdown of "Ionic Fun k"; the Victoria Suite finds Bristolian hip-hop crew The Aspects rhyming over shredded digital hip-hop on "All Terrain Aspects"; and The Lobby hosts the conference's closing event, the excellent techno simplicity of "We Are Not a Rock Band". Sure, Si Begg might be a techno prankster, but he makes some seriously good records. -- Louis Pattison

Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Olmos wasn't kidding when he said "the series is even better than the miniseries." As developed by sci-fi TV veteran Ronald D. Moore, the "reimagined" BG is exactly what it claims to be: a drama for grown-ups in a science-fiction setting. The mature intelligence of the series is its greatest asset, from the tenuous respect between Galactica's militarily principled commander Adama (Olmos) and politically astute, cancer-stricken colonial President Roslin (Mary McDonnell) to the barely suppressed passion between ace Viper pilot "Apollo" (a.k.a. Adama's son Lee, played by Jamie Bamber) and the brashly insubordinate Starbuck (Katee Sackhoff), whose multifaceted character is just one of many first-season highlights. Picking up where the miniseries ended, season 1 opens with the riveting, Hugo Award-winning episode "33," in which Galactica and the "ragtag fleet" of colonial survivors begin their quest for the legendary 13th colony planet Earth, while being pursued with clockwork regularity by the Cylons, who've now occupied the colonial planet of Caprica. The fleet's hard-fought survival forms (1) the primary side of the series' three-part structure, shared with (2) the apparent psychosis of Dr. Gaius Baltar (James Callis) whose every thought and move are monitored by various incarnations Number Six (Tricia Helfer), the seemingly omniscient Cylon ultravixen who follows a master plan somehow connected to (3) the Caprican survival ordeal of crash-landed pilots "Helo" (Tahmoh Penikett) and soon-to-be-pregnant "Boomer" (Grace Park), whose simultaneous presence on Galactica is further evidence that 12 multicopied models of Cylons, in human form, are gathering their forces. With remarkably consistent quality, each of these 13 episodes deepens the dynamics of these fascinating characters and suspenseful situations. While BG relies on finely nuanced performances, solid direction, and satisfying personal and political drama to build its strong emotional foundation, the action/adventure elem
