Jolie Holland EscondidaSe flere produkter fra AmazonJolie Holland's first album recorded in an actual studio is a sumptuous affair that extends her indie-country and folk sound further into the realms of old-school jazz and country blues. But Escondida is no quaint revivalism; ye olde sounds are made modern by smart lyrics that reference feminist writer/adventurer Isabelle Eberhardt on the whimsical "Old Fashion Morphine", or that speak of "a couple of food stamps and a caffeine buzz" on "Poor Girl". The arrangements are subtle and sophisticated, showing more breadth than those on her debut, Catalpa, with fewer instruments in the way of her superlative voice. Her singing has such soul and energy that she's as often compared to Chan Marshall and Karen Dalton as she is to Billie Holiday. Her update of the old Irish folk song "Tom of Bedlam" is brilliant, just vocals with roiling jazz drums behind it. It's difficult to think of a more compelling sophomore record by a young singer-songwriter, Norah Jones included. --Mike McGonigal, Amazon.com Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack A Knight's TaleSe flere produkter fra AmazonWriter-director Brian Helgeland dared to use rock music--mostly anthems from the 1970s--to accompany A Knight's Tale, his rousing story of a medieval jousting champion, and this anachronistic strategy pays off handsomely by giving the film a joyful exuberance that it might otherwise have lacked. Divorced from the film, this hot sampling of hits is just another corporate song package intended to boost the film's profit margin, but it's still a blast to listen to. For anyone who grew up with this music--by Queen, War, David Bowie, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, Heart, Thin Lizzy, and others--the line-up of favourites plays like an hour from the golden years of album-orientated-rock radio. Younger listeners can hear what they missed--the music was so much better than it was given credit for at the time--and an update of Queen's "We Are the Champions", with Robbie Williams interpreting the irreplaceable Freddie Mercury, turns out to be not half bad (especially since Brian May's guitar licks are still fantastic). "One of Our Own" is the only track to sample Carter Burwell's lush film score with a dialogue clip included, and three tracks (including "Eye Conqueror" by Third Eye Blind) are passable non-film songs exclusive to this CD. Cynics might argue that this music has no place in a medieval knight's tale, and that this soundtrack is entirely perfunctory. Those opinions could be justified, but it's a whole lot easier--and a lot more fun--to press "play" and groove on this energetic celebration of heroic rock & roll. -- Jeff Shannon Fragt: Ukendt! |

Yiddish Radio Project The Yiddish Radio ProjectSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe dual assault of television and rock & roll in the 1950s caused many casualties, among them swing music, radio and a vital Yiddish-American culture. This wonderful project (and its companion 10-part NPR documentary series) celebrates a time when those three institutions joined together to form a powerful force of their own. Producers Henry Sapoznik and Yair Reiner recreate Yiddish radio's golden age of the 1930s-1950s with a combination of klezmer music, "Yiddish swing" and commercial jingles culled from vintage 78s as well as radio transcriptions (once the property of longtime TV host Joe Franklin). It's a fascinating story of a time when Jewish culture thrived in its new home, but within is buried a different story: one of assimilation. The once-beloved traditional klezmer sounds of Eastern Europe (represented here in the work of Dave Tarras and Naftule Brandwein) were slowly replaced by "Yiddish swing", a mostly successful attempt to update traditional Jewish pop and folk songs in the fashionable swing style--or as Sapoznik puts it, "playing downtown Jewish music in an uptown style". The need (or perhaps desire) for acceptance is revealed in both performer names (the Bagelman girls became the Barry Sisters) and in "non-ethnic" product spots for essentially "ethnic" products. Tellingly, it was the Midwestern Andrews Sisters' 1937 hit reading of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" (originally from a Yiddish play) that set off an explosion of Yiddish and American cultural cross-pollination. It represented the peak of Yiddish cultural influence in America--and as it turned out, the beginning of that culture's demise. For most, the Yiddish Radio Project will be an endearing and enlightening history lesson, but for many others, it will be a bittersweet nostalgic journey through a time that remains so vivid in memories, yet feels like thousands of years ago. --Marc Greilsamer Fragt: Ukendt! |

Radio 4 GothamSe flere produkter fra AmazonGotham! is the fiercely political second album from New York City's Radio 4. Forget the Strokes, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or any of the usual names from NYC's Class of 2002 for comparison; Radio 4 take their cues from further along the rock timeline, with the raw post-punk sounds of A Certain Ratio, ESG, the Clash and Gang of Four as their reference points, and update them with the contemporary production values of Primal Scream knob-twiddlers Tim Goldsworthy and James Murphy. Lyrically, Gotham!'s 13 tracks of jagged punk-funk seethe with the Brooklyn-based band's fury at the state of their city and thus is a social action call-to-arms for its residents. Gotham!'s defiance takes in wider social issues, such as AIDS education ("Start a Fire") and promotion of the arts to all social classes ("Save Your City"), but former NYC Mayor Rudi Guiliani and his draconian "no dancing" Cabaret Law and Quality of Life campaign are the most popular targets and lambasted in highlights "Our Town", "New Disco" and blistering single "Dance to the Underground". For all their urgency and air-punching politics, Radio 4 never get tedious. Gotham! is evidence they've got as tenacious a grip on tight riffs as insightful lyrics and is as danceable as it is insightful. -- Leslie Gilotti Fragt: Ukendt! |

Red Dead Revolver (Xbox)Se flere produkter fra AmazonIt's an absolute crime that there hasn't been more Wild West-themed video games over the years, but Red Dead Revolver redresses this balance almost instantly with a gloriously authentic spaghetti western feel that'll make the next clichéd fantasy or SF setting you come across even harder to bear. Red Dead Revolver has had an unusual history, starting life as an update of Capcom's old Gun Smoke arcade game before being canned. So confident were the developer's of the game's worth though that they convinced Grand Theft Auto publishers Rockstar to buy up the rights and allow them to finish their work. And thank goodness they did, for not only does the game entirely legitimise the Wild West as a viable setting for a video game, but it's one of the most entertaining arcade shooters of recent years. The controls are just complex enough to allow depth, without becoming fiddly, and allow you to use cover appropriately, and fight hand to hand and with a huge range of different weapons. The best bit though is the bullet time-esque "Dead Eye" mode which allows you to select multiple targets in slow motion and then switch back to normal time and blast everyone away instantly, just like Clint Eastwood. With sections on horseback, a number of missions (perhaps too many) where you control a side character instead of the eponymous Red, and tons of references to classic movie moments this has just about everything you could ask for from a cowboy shooter. -- David Jenkins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Kings Of Convenience VersusSe flere produkter fra AmazonGiven that remixers' recourse to acoustica is the next logical link to down-tempo electronica, it's no surprise that the Kings of Convenience's beguiling debut has undergone this treatment. Versus sees the winsome, lovelorn ditties of Quiet is the New Loud reinterpreted by the likes of fellow Norwegians Royksopp (whose lovely remix of "I Don't Know What to Save You From" appeared on the "Failure" single), Four Tet, Ladytron and Alfie, amongst others. Apart from Ladytron, who opt for their characteristic warped synth-pop, on the whole the assembled cast choose to gently tweak the songs, rather than offer any radical reworking of them. Evil Tordivel update "Leaning Against the Wall" with sprightly horns and keyboards, leaving the song less introspective, but still recognisable. Wayward folksters Alfie remake "Failure" (also included on the single), but are less successful, as its skewed lo-fi tends to overbear much of the all-important melody. Riton's remix of "The Girl From Back Then" adds gentle sprinkles of nonchalant, shuffling beats, but the highlight, is the "Weight of My Words" remix by Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet. As showcased on his glorious Pause album, he melds bubbling electronica with an organic, folky ambience, perfectly demonstrating the premise of Versus. - Suzannah Brown Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack Miss CongenialitySe flere produkter fra AmazonSwedish singer Bosson was nominated for the Best Original Song Golden Globe Award for this album's lead-off cut and single "One in a Million". Its free-floating, lightweight pop perfectly reflects the light-hearted humour that underpins Sandra Bullock's film about an undercover FBI agent sent to infiltrate the Miss America pageant. Beats per minute are kept at a brisk, steady pace as even old-timer showboater Tom Jones has his kitsch classic "She's a Lady" remixed and hyper-energised by electronica artist BT. The Baha Men, who let the dogs out, try for hit number two with "Get Yer Party On". A*Teens provide a smooth remake of Abba's "Dancing Queen", while Los Lobos update the Wilson Pickett R&B classic "Mustang Sally". Southern Culture on the Skids, with the help of a festive horn section, keep things lively with "Liquored Up and Lacquered Down". No question here, there's a party goin' on. -- Rob O'Connor Fragt: Ukendt! |

James Bond Films (Related Recordings) Shaken and Stirred: The David Arnold James Bond ProjectSe flere produkter fra AmazonEnlisting an array of indie icons, from Iggy Pop to Chrissie Hynde (whose version of "Live And Let Die" is a definite highlight), Arnold attempts to update--if not exactly subvert--some of the more notable Bond theme tunes. Yet despite this noble attempt at deconstruction, what's remarkable here is how so many of the acts conform to expectations: Pulp, typically, make "All Time High" seem a furtive, even faintly grubby experience; while Aimee Mann performs "Nobody Does It Better" with a kind of weary sarcasm, either unable or unwilling to swallow the myth of male potency. On the other hand, Shara Nelson's reading of "Moonraker", and Martin Fry's "Thunderball," each manage to communicate at least a little of the magic of the original versions. And having at last found a piece worthy of him, David McAlmont loses no opportunity to make "Diamonds Are Forever" his own. --Andrew McGuire Fragt: Ukendt! |

Father of the BrideSe flere produkter fra AmazonThis 1990s update of the Spencer Tracy-Elizabeth Taylor hit is a mix of the pleasant and the silly, a nice enough movie but a little too controlled to become particularly interesting. Steve Martin plays the ageing patriarch who is threatened by his daughter's engagement and not-quite-willing to let her go. The writing-directing team of Charles Shyer and Nancy Meyers provides Martin's character with a perhaps too-broad range of comic responsiveness to the situation, some of it gentle (a ritual game of basketball between dad and his little girl) and some of it slapstick (Martin sneaking around his prospective in-laws' house and encountering a guard dog). Martin Short turns up as a wedding co-ordinator--which has deliriously delicious possibilities--but his inventiveness doesn't quite strike the chord this time. --Tom Keogh Fragt: Ukendt! |

Bangles Doll RevolutionSe flere produkter fra AmazonThey used to be seen as sex kittens, now on Doll Revolution, they look like the cast of Sex in the City. Yet 15 years after the Bangles' last album, Everything, the California power-poppers breeze back in looking and sounding as though they've been gone a mere 15 minutes. Eloquent, assured and sensual, Doll Revolution is measured yet mesmerising, considered yet colossal. This is one 80s comeback that really is a good idea. So is this "doll revolution" some LA take on Girl Power? Or a glossy update on Riot Grrrl? Hardly. The Bangles never were ones for manifestos. Melodies are more their game, and these mostly self-penned songs display a beautifully developed sense of songcraft. "Something That You Said" is an exercise in sepia longing, while the sublime West Coast harmonies of "Stealing Rosemary" is a reminder that the quartet originally began life, 20 years prior, as Paisley Underground psychedelics named the Supersonic Bangs. The gentle ballad "I Will Take Care of You" will have lighters aloft on the comeback tour, yet is also achingly intimate. And the yearning "Single by Choice", glancing back over a life half-done, is both a shoo-in for the soundtrack of the next Bridget Jones movie and also a knowing, experience-heavy poem that they simply couldn't have crafted the first time around. The Bangles have returned older but wiser and there is, as Doll Revolution amply demonstrates, simply no substitute for experience. --Ian Gittins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Everything But The Girl Walking WoundedSe flere produkter fra AmazonPurists on both sides scoffed, but EBTG's transition from bedsit folkies to club favourites was one of the artistic coups of its year. Ben Watt had admitted that their previous album in 1994, Amplified Heart, seemed lacklustre, the work of a band trapped by its format, and he sought an outlet for his burgeoning love of dance music. Encouraged by the chart success of Todd Terry's remix of that album's "Missing", and by partner Tracey Thorn's collaboration with Massive Attack, the pair took the plunge setting their melancholy vignettes of love-gone-wrong to discreet electronics, and recruiting an impressive roster of drum & bass producers (Omni Trio, Howie B, Spring Heel Jack) to assist with the update. The result was their most cohesive and satisfying collection since Idlewild, an extraordinary return to form that sounded nothing like their earlier work. Tracks like "Single" and "Big Deal" covered familiar lyrical terrain (loneliness, nostalgia, unrequited passion), but allied the material to a radically more contemporary sound. Yet, as ever, the real coup was not any piece of studio trickery, but Thorn's languid, sensuous vocals. Rarely has heartbreak seemed so enticing. --Andrew McGuire Fragt: Ukendt! |

Four Tet PauseSe flere produkter fra AmazonKieran Hebden is, it has to be said, something of a genius. The groundwork for Pause was laid on Dialogue--his debut solo album under the guise of Four Tet--landed in 1999, and immediately went about redrawing the parameters of inventive dance music. A peculiar mix of live-sounding instrumental jazz and technologically super-precise laptop dance trickery, it sounded nothing like Hebden's actual group--his day job is spent toiling in occasionally inspired post-rockers Fridge--and, as it happened, very little like anything else in existence. While not as radical a statement as Dialogue seemed, Pause is a definite update--a second brave step into the great beyond; where Dialogue employed jazz sax and flute in its evocation of a 21st-century jazz meltdown, Pause goes even further, coiling whispers of harp and zither over layer-on-layers of fidgeting, rattling percussion. His inspirations? Well, like his friend and protégé, Canadian tech-wizard Manitoba (whose excellent Start Breaking My Heart is easily the equal of Pause), Hebden collects sounds and melodies from a dizzying array of places--ancient British folk music, the rattle of typewriter keys, the gurgle of running water, even a field recording of a children's playground. Genius? There really is no other word for it. -- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |
