Unlike the subject of the previous collection-- Great Composers: John Williams--there haven't been many retrospectives of Elmer Bernstein's career. The best thing about Varese Sarabande's collection is the number of original performances from the composer himself the label has been able to assemble from its own back catalogue. Together with faithful re-recordings by Joel McNeely and Cliff Eidelman from other Varese albums, this makes for a brilliant introduction to Bernstein's long and distinguished film career. He practically invented the adventurous Western sound full of charging rhythms and vastly-stretching hero motifs. John Wayne's saunter would never have been the same without them. All-time highs include: The Magnificent Seven, The Ten Commandments, The Great Escape and True Grit. From the more recent end of his career there's a real display of diversity between The Age Of Innocence (a lush turn-of-century portrait), The Grifters (tongue-in-cheek film noir), A Rage In Harlem (a stroll through the backstreets of Bernstein's youth in mid-1930s New Yawk) and Wild Wild West (clearly an attempt at "The Magnificent Will Smith"). The latter is the closing segment of a Western section, preceded by Wayne's classic vehicles: The Shootist, The Commancherosand True Grit. If there's a few lesser items among the many greats, this is nonetheless an excellent career overview. --Paul Tonks

Story? What story? All a film like Shanghai Noon needs is the amazing stunt set pieces featuring kung fu superstar Jackie Chan and the ramblings of Owen Wilson (and to be sure, that's all it gets). It's a buddy comedy about Roy O'Bannon (Wilson), a minor, borderline incompetent desperado, and Chon Wang (Chan--Roy thinks he hears (and scoffs at) the name "John Wayne"--a member of the Chinese Imperial Guard searching for a kidnapped princess (Lucy Liu). They become reluctant partners in the Old West (Roy, who considers Chon his sidekick, is hurt to discover that the bounty on Wang's head is more than his own), brawling, drinking, bathing and bonding and in general having mildly amusing adventures together, while eluding a posse and other random enemies. There's not a lot of focus to the plot or much motivation for characters to turn up where and when they do--just what was achieved by the much-discussed trek to Carson City, anyway?--but Chan's inventively staged battle sequences (particularly an early one in which he uses flexible, resilient trees to best some Crow Indians) are predictable highlights. You'll wish there were more to some of them, but as with his many other films, you'll want them on video to watch in slow-motion to see how he pulls them off. And in a potentially star-making role, Wilson's loquacious, hyper-self-conscious meanderings--he's funny even when his lines aren't--make him seem less like a character than a very amusing deconstruction of one. Chan and Wilson are entertaining together, even though they're both off in their own little worlds. Think of it as Butch Cassidy and the Shanghai Kid, and you won't be too far off.

My Morning Jacket At Dawn [VINYL]

My Morning Jacket At Dawn [VINYL]

Let's not mess about: My Morning Jacket's At Dawn is a classic American rock record. There is nothing exactly revolutionary about the second album from the quintet from Louisville, Kentucky. Guitars strum and occasionally squall, vocals are of the high and lonesome variety, songs stretch out from poignant sketches into rambunctious shows of strength. Educated guesses suggest a few Neil Young albums might have found their way into the life of singer, guitarist and songwriter Jim James. Elsewhere, someone could be reinventing music. It's doubtful, though, that they could make anything out of it quite as fragile, powerful and involving as At Dawn. Habitually linked with Wayne Coyne (Flaming Lips) and Jonathan Donahue (Flaming Lips / Mercury Rev), James's plaintive, massively-reverbed vocals actually have as much in common with Roy Orbison and Gene Pitney--noble, heartbroken balladeers on the fringes of rock. Better still, his songs are the kind of marvels that Americana's pin-ups frequently promise yet so rarely deliver. Highlighting individual tracks seems crude in the context of so many riches. Indeed, by the time "Phone Went West" has spent seven minutes resurrecting that most benighted of genres, white reggae, you'll be convinced My Morning Jacket are not just masters of the ancient arts, but the best band to saunter onto the world stage since the White Stripes. -- John Mulvey

Robert Plant Sixty Six To Timbuktu

Robert Plant Sixty Six To Timbuktu

Sixty Six to Timbukto offers the listener two CDs worth of solo Robert Plant hits, key album cuts and obscurities, beginning with his vinyl debut in 1966 (a precocious cover of the Youngbloods' hit "You Better Run") and ending with a live version of "Win My Train Fare Home", recorded in the most famous city in Mali (hence the album title). Aficionados will head straight for disc two: although it's not comprehensive (it contains only one of Plant's four recordings from 1966), it's a bounty of rarities. While there's nothing from Plant's pre-Zeppelin combo "Hobbstweedle", the raw crackle of two "Band of Joy" cuts from 1967 (featuring John Bonham on drums) serves to remind us how much the White Stripes are indebted to the lion-haired lemon-squeezer from West Brom. And while there's plenty of interesting stuff collated from sources as diverse as film soundtracks (the rockabilly "Philadelphia Lady" from Porky's Revenge, a ludicrous "Louie Louie" from that cinematographic masterpiece Wayne's World 2) and collaborations with Alexis Korner, Afro Celt Sound System and Jools Holland, one can only marvel at the generosity of a man who can place a song as superior as "Hey Jayne" on a B-side. Disc one (hits and album tracks) is a more than useful meet-and-greet for the uninitiated. The earlier post-Zep material suffers from a thin 80s production (the tippy-tappy drums would have driven Bonzo Bonham bonkers) but the Fate of Nations stuff is great. "29 Palms" would have sounded positively regal if presented by Roy Orbison and British hit "Big Log" makes long-distance haulage seem as romantic as a noctural cruise along the Nile. -- Kevin Maidment

Brendan Benson Lapalco

He might be best known for receiving the ferverent patronage of his fellow Detroit natives the White Stripes, but the songs on Brendan Benson's second album display little of Jack and Meg's raggedy-assed garage roar. Rather, Lapalco pricks memories of fine power-pop groups from years past. Drawing on the somersaulting melodies of Fountains of Wayne and Teenage Fanclub, Benson and his longtime musical colleague Jason Faulkner write ornate, technicolour-bright songs that revel in their own rose-tinted slackerdom. On the misleadingly titled "Folk Singer", feedback-strewn power-pop melodies eddy past like dandelion seeds on the wind, while Benson sings self-consciously geeksome lyrics that directly reference his idols: "She says `Stop pretending/ You're not John Lennon'". Sure enough, on "Tiny Spark", squelchy organs herald a classic-sounding 1960s riff that might as well have just stepped out of a time capsule. But Benson injects enough character and humour into his songs to avoid a sticky, stagnant fate. "Met a girl/ Introduced myself/ Asked her to go with me/ And no-one else" he sings, earnestly, on "Metarie". "You need a bath/ Your clothes are wrong," comes the withering reply, "You're not my type/ Know we wouldn't get along". With the gall to dump himself on his own record, how could this self-confessed loser fail to pull a winner out of the bag? --Louis Pattison

The Shootist [1976]

The last film of John Wayne, The Shootist, could not have been more fitting, full of details that can't help but make one reflect upon his legacy in the movies and his life as a star. Wayne plays a career gunfighter in the autumn of his life, trying to hang up his pistols after he discovers he's dying of cancer. Boarding in the house of an attractive widow (Lauren Bacall) and her son (Ron Howard), Wayne's character opts for peace in his final days but is dogged by his reputation when a handful of killers seeks him out for a final fight. Howard is fine as a fatherless boy who needs the strong mentor the hero represents, and James Stewart--who costarred with Wayne in the great Man Who Shot Liberty Valance--plays the doctor who gives the big man the bad news. Don Siegel ( Invasion of the Body Snatchers) thoughtfully directs a very special and sensitive production. --Tom Keogh

True Grit/The Sons Of Katie Elder/The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance

True Grit A wonderful/rueful running gag in El Dorado involves the Edgar Allan Poe line "Ride, boldly ride" being mangled by toupee-wearer John Wayne into "Ride, baldy, ride." Two years later, in True Grit, Wayne put the joke in italics by donning an eyepatch and several inches of girth to play cantankerous territorial marshal Rooster Cogburn. Critics belatedly noticed that he could be a marvelously entertaining actor, and Hollywood finally gave him the Oscar they'd failed to nominate him for in Red River, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, The Quiet Man, The Searchers, et al. But make no mistake: True Grit is a splendid movie, with lovingly textured storytelling and sturdy characters, Henry Hathaway's finest high-country action set-pieces, intoxicatingly ornate frontier language, and a couple of formidable bad guys (Jeff Corey's Tom Cheney and Robert Duvall's "Lucky" Ned Pepper). It's a compliment to say that, from a technical standpoint, the movie could have been made any time in Hathaway's 40-year career, yet its feeling for the reality of violence ceded no ground to The Wild Bunch, released around the same time. Still, the film's most sublime passage falls between bursts of gunplay: Rooster sitting on a hilltop at night recounting his life story, as John Wayne metamorphoses ineluctably into W.C. Fields. -- Richard T. Jameson The Sons of Katie Elder John Wayne recovered from his first bout with cancer to appear in this 1965 film as the brother of Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, and Michael Anderson Jr. All four characters are wandering souls prone to trouble, but after the funeral of their frontier mother, they set out to avenge her death. Directed by Henry Hathaway (Wayne's director on True Grit), the film moves like a conventional, latter-day Western, with good performances from Wayne and Martin, who'd already costarred with the Duke in Howard Hawks's Rio Bravo. Nice support from Dennis Hopper (who had a legendary conflict with Hathaway on this film), Strother Martin, and George Kennedy. -- Tom Keogh The Man
