Beyonce Dangerously in LoveSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt's hyped up, rush-released to avoid piracy and full of stars--but is Beyoncé's solo album Dangerously in Love worthy of all the expectancy? Yes. Her individual break from Destiny's Child has been predicted for the last four years, but Dangerously in Love takes advantage of not being hurried. The first single "Crazy in Love" (featuring apparent fiancé Jay Z) opens the album and sets the quality bar high. Catchy, high octane and so, so now, it's the perfect club song. Then it's down to business with "Naughty Girl", a teasing track built around Donna Summer's erotic "Love to Love You Baby"--Beyoncé goes from soul-pop kid to sexually mature woman in three minutes. The hip-hop of "Star" has a N*E*R*D feel, with Outkast's Big Boi undoubtedly responsible for pushing the track into rock/funk territory, a little out of the way of usual Destiny's Child fare. Sean Paul, fast replacing Busta Rhymes as the omnipresent guest star, takes over on "Baby Boy", riding a fashionably eastern-flavoured beat (not unrelated to the famous Diwali rhythm) around Beyoncé's vocals. The ballad with Luther Vandross is tender without overdosing on sugar, while the astrological cut "Signs", with Missy Elliott, is another standout. Closing track "Daddy" finds Beyoncé crooning over a psychedelic piece of jazz funk, taken from cult 1970s artist Shuggie Otis, whom Beyoncé has been citing as an inspiration. Surprisingly, Beyoncé is the last member of Destiny's Child to release a solo album. The wait has been worthwhile. --Jake Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |

Incubus Make Yourself: Special Tour EditionSe flere produkter fra AmazonYoung, aggro and from Los Angeles--with Make Yourself it's tempting to put Incubus in the already crowded category populated by Korn, System of a Down and their other loud-and-heavy brethren. But that would sell Incubus short, because Make Yourself, the quintet's sophomore album, is a strong progression from their 1997 debut, S.C.I.E.N.C.E.. More like Faith No More than Limp Bizkit, Incubus still have that teen-mosh appeal, though the songwriting and instrumentation on Make Yourself is diverse and thoughtful, both lyrically and musically. "Drive" is an easygoing, slightly trippy acoustic-based outing, while oddball scratching (courtesy of DJ Chris Kilmore) and trip-hop funkiness make "Battlestar Scralatchtica" aptly titled. "Nowhere Fast" has a reggae tinge and lovely melodic interludes, in contrast to the furious intensity of "Out from Under", which gives Make Yourself a surprisingly cohesive diversity that's hard to categorise. Ultimately, singer Brandon Boyd is not a vocal genius, but lyrically and in performance, he's sensitive, charismatic and unique. Ian Brown Remixes Of The SpheresSe flere produkter fra AmazonLike all three of Ian Brown's solo albums, Remixes of the Spheres, from 2001's Music of the Spheres, would be a work of genius were it not for the all the niggling imperfections. In among the genuine remixes, the scraped together fillers--former Japan-only track "Superstar", the live version of "El Mundo Pequeno"--are easy to spot. And it's impossible not to question the wisdom of including three instrumentals, when Brown's trump card is always his deadpan, pseudo-spiritual ramblings. Yet, as is Brown's way, when it's good, it's exceptional. In the hands of Nightmares on Wax, "The Gravy Train"--Brown's sulky dismissal of the vacuous lifestyles of the rich and famous--slopes to a seedy slouch that heightens his disdain. Cedar Blue's clicks, bleeps and backwards loop elevate "Forever and a Day" to a zero gravity lullaby that Air would be proud of and under Freelance Hell Raiser the sketchy "Northern Lights" becomes a fully formed ode to love with a sci-fi punk twist. Ultimately though, it's the standout from Music of the Spheres, "F.E.A.R", that's the main prize. Outstripping anything else James Lavelle's U.N.K.L.E have done in recent memory, this recasting of the acronym mantra as a Clubbed-to-Death-style epic of driving beats and majestically melancholic strings is second only to the original. And that was indeed an unequivocal work of genius. -- Dan Gennoe Fragt: Ukendt! |

Prince The Very Best of PrinceSe flere produkter fra AmazonTaken literally, the Very Best of Prince title is sure to cause endless arguments. Nothing from Dirty Mind, not a trace of the early Controversy, no "Erotic City", no non-LP cuts at all, save some edited single-versions and a cold shoulder to the criminally out-of-print Gold Experience. As a compendium of 17 key A-sides from 1979 to 1992, however, The Very Best of Pri nce is (ahem) a quick-'n'-dirty review of the days when the Artist was, in the estimation of R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck, one of the weirdest musicians in the Top 10. Blessed with both creative cunning and the wish to reach every listener possible, Prince revitalised rock and soul modes from the sex-crazed ("Little Red Corvette") to the cryptically spiritual ("Purple Rain"). Often he blurred lines between attitudes as surely as he did musical ones; the New Testament image of "Thieves in the Temple" became in his hands a complaint about a stolen girlfriend. A fine party artefact, this disc is still likely to prove too scanty even for many casual Prince fans. --Rickey Wright Fragt: Ukendt! |

Kate Nash Made of BricksSe flere produkter fra AmazonKate Nash is the perfect pop starlet. She sounds enough like one existing star to make her an already snug fit for your tastes (if it needs spelling out for you--L.I.L.Y.A.L.L.E.N--there's no getting away from the thematic and elocutionary parallels, no matter how much the lady doth protest). She's ordinary-ish. She's you, your girlfriend, that girl over there you adore/admire, only clearly cuter and packed with a sharper tongue. She sings of nothing much, but sings it with juicy vim and bright expressions through a deliciously theatrical voice-box, a hangover from her stage school background that faltered, leading her to channel her wit and personality into writing songs. A sprinkling of anarchy too--something for the parents to disapprove of? Well, she's got a filthy mouth and a frankly blasé grasp of the Queen's English. It's a shame really that she's not quite made the perfect pop debut to match, but Made of Bricks is a damn fine first run, when it gets it right. The jerky prelude to the album proper, "Play" reminds briefly of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Bis, segueing into the Lily Allen plays Carter USM playfulness of "Foundations". "Dickhead" is a silly, smoky blues ditty, the massive, gyrating "Pumpkin Song" is Sugababes with their hair pulled behind the bike sheds, key-hammering highlight "Mariella" reminds of expressive vaudeville New Yorkers the Dresden Dolls and "We Get On" could be a Grease outtake, though nothing the innocent Olivia Newton John would ever wrap her lips around. Van Dyke Parks Moonlighting:Live [Us Import]Se flere produkter fra AmazonParks has always been a moonlighter, producing albums by Little Feat and Randy Newman, writing arrangements for U2 and Victoria Williams, and composing film scores. He's also recorded half a dozen albums on his own, but he's spent most of his career in the shadow of an early failed collaboration: his work as lyricist for Brian Wilson's epic '60s disaster, Smile. Moonlighting, a live recording taken from a 1996 performance, places him in the spotlight's full glare. There may be a 17-piece band behind him, but Parks sings (by his own admission badly) and plays piano throughout, displaying the personality a bitter environmentalist one moment, and then self-assured professor the next-that drives the album. Though he's lived in California since the '60s, Parks was born in Mississippi and even without the drawl he remains a Southerner. That he's a sentimentalist is evident in the Br'er Rabbit-inspired "Jump!" and "Hominy Grove," but he also has an intellectual's appreciation for the past. Occasionally, this leads him astray; listen to his stilted version of Uncle Dave Macon's old folk tune, "C-H-I-C-K-E-N." More often it feels right, especially on a lovely orchestral remake of John Hartford's "Delta Queen Waltz" and a pair of instrumentals inspired by the 19th-century New Orleans composer, Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Moonlighting is a welcome anachronism, with its star reading a Robert Frost poem, singing a song about FDR's trip to the Caribbean before cruiseships, and reinventing Little Feat's "Sailin' Shoes" as a slide-guitar-and-strings art song. Between songs, Parks admits, "This isn't a franchise operation, folks." Thank God for that, not to mention Parks's thin voice and slightly misshapen heart. --Keith Moerer Fragt: Ukendt! |

NCIS (Naval Criminal Investigative Service). Season 1Se flere produkter fra AmazonEqual parts JAG and C.S.I. , NCIS does a formidable job of blending relevant military headlines with quirky characters who are tenaciously determined to solve a crime--even if it means having to sleep in the morgue to get a few minutes of shut eye. Created by Donald P. Bellisario ( JAG, Quantum Leap), NCIS actually began as a two-part episode of JAG in 2003. Later that year, the drama made its full-season debut on CBS in the States. On this six-disc set, which includes all 23 non- JAG episodes plus optional commentary by Bellisario on the first episode, viewers are introduced to an elite squad of special agents, led by Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). Gibbs is a hard-nosed investigator who doesn't say much. But when he does, an insult usually comes out of his mouth. He's brilliant when it comes to ferreting out the truth, but he's not savvy enough to figure out how to block his ex-wife's nagging phone calls. Instead, he makes do by destroying his cell phone. Gibbs' team is fleshed out by an eclectic and somewhat eccentric set of colleagues, including medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum from The Man from U.N.C.L.E. ), wannabe playboy and former homicide detective Anthony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly), forensics expert and resident Goth chick Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), and former Secret Service agent Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander). The murder of a peripheral NCIS agent halfway through the season is a taste of what's to come in future seasons when core characters leave the show (voluntarily or not). But in its first year, the show sets up a strong premise that (while not wholly original) is well executed. One of the more stickling aspects of the show is its reluctance to allow Tony to show signs of maturity. At times, he behaves more like a rambunctious puppy than an ace investigator. -- Jae-Ha Kim Fragt: Ukendt! |

Los Hombres Calientes Los Hombres Calientes Vol.2Se flere produkter fra AmazonLoosely translated as "The Hot Men," this New Orleans-based trio of percussionist Bill Summers, trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, and drummer Jason Marsalis go way beyond their homeboy Jelly Morton's command to add tinges of Latin to jazz. Augmented by bass, guitar, piano vocal, and drums, they create a swinging and dancing musical dish prepared with equal ingredients from all over the African diaspora: from the parade pulsations of "Comparsa N.O." to Argentine amour of "Tangeaux-zon." Marsalis, the boy wonder of his famous family, assimilates an astonishing array of moods and grooves, whether he's swinging a Latin mix on Roberta Flack's hit "Feel Like Makin' Love," laying down a roots riddim on the Black Uhuru-sounding "Rasta Renegade," or Afro-Americanizing the Cuban beat on "Fongo Sunk." A young Miles Davis with a tropical tone best describes Mayfield's sound on the three-part, "Cuban Suite," which includes an impressionistic string quartet, a balmy bolero, and a moving montuno. Bill Summers, the star of this outfit, is perhaps the best American-born African drummer ever. His sacred rhythms on "Alabi Oyo E" and "Suite Obatala" echo his work on Quincy Jones's Roots soundtrack, and the booty-shaking remake of "Chameleon," which he made famous with Herbie Hancock and Parliament's "We Want the Funk," reminds everybody where the "one" is. --Eugene Holley Jr. Fragt: Ukendt! |

Original Soundtrack The IncrediblesSe flere produkter fra AmazonPixar Studios continues its string of computer animation successes with this satirical tale of a family of superheroes (picture a flabby, suburbanized Fantastic Four) forced out of retirement by--what else?--an evil genius and his plot for world domination. Director Brad Bird, whose Iron Giant was one of the 90's most sublime, if underappreciated animated triumphs, decided he wanted his Incredibles score to be a throwback to the spy-action genre of the mid-60's. Enter Michael Giacchino, the young composer who'd previously conjured a marvellously eclectic range of musical styles in service of TV's Alias. In his feature film debut, Giacchino (with a key assist from veteran arranger Jack Hayes) ups the ante of Bird's back-to-the-future spy-score gambit with an orchestral jazz soundtrack powered by the brash rhythms of television's Mannix and Man From U.N.C.L.E. beneath a veneer of melodic intrigue and detached elegance that recalls the prime of John Barry's James Bond oeuvre. More importantly, the young composer serves it all up with a sense of assured retro-cool and a distinct lack of irony that makes it all the more inviting. --Jerry McCulley Fragt: Ukendt! |

Aerosmith Pandora's BoxSe flere produkter fra AmazonAerosmith were written off by the pop pundits in the early 1980s as a drug-ravaged bunch of Rolling Stones clones who would go down in music history as little more than a hard-rock footnote. The band, however, rose from the ashes to become an even mightier hit machine in the '90s, even if they ended up selling their soul to pop Ã?ber-songstress Diane Warren in the bargain. This three-CD compilation is a marathon tour of their first glorious, casualty-ridden decade and a body of work that proudly wears its influences on its sleeve: Chicago and Delta blues, early R&B, the Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin, and, of course, the Stones. Virtually all the early hits and concert crowd pleasers are here, along with nearly two dozen rare, unreleased, and live cuts, thoroughly documented with refreshing doses of self-deprecation as it bravely traces the band's arc from Boston bar-band supreme to stadium superstars to seeming dissipation. If there's a gaping hole in the "A" section of your hard-rock library, this is a fine introduction to the Aerosmith that influenced a generation of musicians, stretching from Van Halen to R.E.M. to Guns N' Roses. --Jerry McCulley Fragt: Ukendt! |

Basil Poledouris KimberlySe flere produkter fra AmazonSounding like Shakespearian-lite, this romantic comedy sees four young guys all in love with one gal (Gabrielle Anwar), but kept by a mutual promise from pursuing her. Translated into music, a frequently French design underlies the gentle whimsy. Circa the mid-1980s, Danny Elfman's Pee Wee's Big Adventure score created a resurgence of interest in the styles of Georges Delerue and Nino Rota, a sort of Big Top light-heartedness. You will find that here (e.g., "Wake Up") alongside another 1980s staple, the sax and drum set-combo is backed by strings ("Early Row"). But to call this score behind the times is actually to pay it a compliment. This style--long since superseded--is a far better method of cracking the trickiness of making the music itself inherently comedic ("Rush to the Hospital" being a riot). With this album, Poledouris is miles away from the likes of Starship Troopers; it's half an hour of jazzy, smooth 'n' smoochy fun. -- Paul Tonks Fragt: Ukendt! |

Beenie Man Tropical StormSe flere produkter fra AmazonTropical Storm comes after the stunning Art & Life album, that masterfully mixed ragga with Hip-hop-pop but is a bit of a disappointment. This album from the productive singer/toaster essentially tries to repeat the recipe, but the ingredients that worked so well in 2000 have now gone stale. Beenie Man's once again teamed up with the ubiquitous producers The Neptunes (aka N*E*R*D), but with mixed results. Their production with Janet Jackson (Feel It Boy) is just a pampered superstar playing ragga girl but the hard-hitting, mad bleeping "Bad Girl" shows that the Philadelphian production duo could hold their own in any Kingston studio. Beenie Man's collaboration with the UK's So Solid Crew is also worthwhile but the Jamaican singer seems so confused by their typically manic beats and deep warp bass that all he can seem to mutter is "Yagga Y", the title of the track. No matter, it works as a hardcore speaker buster, the sort of thing you want to hear tearing down the walls in a south London club. Beenie Man has always had at least one eye on the international hip-hop market, hence the involvement of sex kitten for rent Lil' Kim on the pumping "Fresh From Yard", produced by DJ Clue. Ironically, but not surprisingly, the best tracks are free from stars such as the hypnotic "Bossman" and the sweet "You Babe". Lyrically Beenie Man has got caught in a lyrical rut, obsessing over the clichés of gangsta status, guns and street life as compared to the positivity of tracks like "Jamaica Way" and "Girls Dem Sugar" from Art & Life. In truth it sounds like Beenie Man has been getting his reality from MTV and chart shows rather than from the natural font of his home turf. -- Jake Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |
