Vivaldi The Vivaldi AlbumSe flere produkter fra AmazonMezzo Cecilia Bartoli could easily rest on her laurels as one of today's most charismatic, character singers for her lively portrayals of Mozart and Rossini heroines. But it's been particularly exciting to observe her growth as an artist in exploring the exuberant world of baroque opera, with its range of pyrotechnic demands--both vocal and emotional. Bartoli's show-stopping virtuosity in a Vivaldi aria from her Live in Italy recital gave a tantalising sample of her finesse in that style. For The Vivaldi Album, Bartoli conducted extensive research into the composer's manuscripts (a documentary tracing her quest is planned for subsequent screening). Although he's best known for his concertos--in typically baroque fashion, two of the arias in fact recycle material from The Four Seasons--Vivaldi was a ferociously prolific composer of operas for the cutting-edge theatres of his time and the arias gathered here demonstrate the word-painting magic of his music, from the sylvan setting of duetting flageolets in "Di due rai languire costante" to the storm-tossed passions of "Anch'il mar par che sommerga", where Bartoli spins out ripples of rapid-fire coloratura with a gravity-defying accuracy that will leave your head spinning. In addition to many such examples of vocal acrobatics, Bartoli brings exquisite nuance and limpid tone to the delicate echo effects of "Zeffiretti, che sussurrate" and there's no better test for the remarkable flexibility of her range--full and dusky at the bottom and thrilling at the top--than the huge intervallic leaps of "Dopo un'orrida procella". With her naturally large voice, Bartoli can at times tend to histrionic excess (in the recitative to the short aria from "L'Orlando finto pazzo"), but the expressive colour of her phrasing is wonderfully matched throughout by Il Giardino Armonico's lively panache. Los Lobos Just Another Band [Us Import]Se flere produkter fra AmazonEven the title of this terrific two-disc compilation--a play on the title of an early-'70s recording by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention--displays just how clever and hip this great L.A. band has always been. Just Another Band is everything an anthology should be, touching on all the best-known moments ("Don't Worry Baby," "Will the Wolf Survive?," "One Time One Night," "La Bamba," etc.), spanning their career from its origins through Kiko (six tracks from which are featured here), arguably their finest hour. Musically, you get hard R&B, Tex-Mex, pure traditional Mexican music, pop-rock, gorgeous ballads, and pure, raucous rock & roll. Actually, pure is the operative word here--and fans who already own all the albums proper will probably still want this for the soundtrack cuts, live versions (including a performance of their great "Let's Say Goodnight"), unreleased outtakes, cool live cover versions (from both Marvin Gaye and Cream!), and even their terrific "I Wanna Be Like You (The Monkey Song)," originally performed by Louis Prima in The Jungle Book, from the late-1980s, Hal Wilner-produced Disney tribute, Stay Awake. With the possible exception of soulmate Foxy Brown, Lil' Kim is the hardest woman in R&B. Sexual over and undertones abound with songs like 'Take it!', and the album features the usual handful of guest appearances, including the now-late Biggy Smalls and members of her former band Junior Mafia. Production chores are handled by the hottest kids on the block: Sean Combs--a.k.a Puff Daddy, Badboy second-in-command Stevie J. and SoSoDef supremo Jermaine Dupri. With the rudest introduction and interlude sections ever recorded, the album features the single "Crush On You" (not to be confused with the Jets/Aaron Carter) which is confusing since Li'l Kim's only contribution to this track seems to be intermittently moaning the word "true". Incidentally, the album's cover is stolen more regularly than any other from London's largest chain of second hand record shops, although what this says about the music is perhaps open to question. --Ronita Dutta Fragt: Ukendt! |

The two L'Arlesienne suites were set down at Abbey Road Studios during just one September day in 1956. They remain, quite simply, among the most treasurable examples of Thomas Beecham's inimitable art that we have (the disc would be worth acquiring for the indelible, achingly poignant "Adagietto" from the first suite alone). What seemingly boundless reserves of tender poetry, intimate delicacy and zestful swagger Sir Thomas lavishes on Bizet's evergreen music. An especial word of praise, too, for an unforgettably personable and charismatic contribution from the RPO's superb roster of woodwind principals. Glowing affection and tingling spontaneity are also hallmarks of the famous 1959 recording of the Symphony in C. True, the playing of the French National Radio Orchestra doesn't always match the RPO's in terms of poise, but Beecham's gloriously warm-hearted interpretation is an absolute joy from start to finish. Celine Dion MiracleSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn collaborating on Miracle, Celine Dion and her partner in baby love Anne Geddes carefully sidestepped the L-word--a smart move, considering that the songs captured here, despite their electric-blanket warmth, aren't always lullaby-like in their delivery. Though the collaboration is about babies--the sleeve notes to this CD provide a sneak peek at Geddes' visual wizardry available in both the expanded box set and book-- Miracle is not necessarily for them. Which works out great for Celine fans who have made contact with their maternal sides. More than anything, the disc plays as a valentine to new mothers: "Le Loup, La Biche et le Chevalier (Une Chanson Douce)", "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", and John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy" get the trademark melt-away vocal treatment, causing the need to keep a box of tissues at the ready. While tenderness flows from each track as consistently as formula from a baby bottle, though, the chanteuse doesn't shy away from the passion and note-pounding that is also her trademarks. Alizee GourmandisesSe flere produkter fra AmazonGourmandises the French word for sweets (or candies) is the appropriate title of French pop princess Alizée's debut album. Like an aniseed ball, the mix of pop tunes and ballads are pleasant and consistent throughout, but at the same time never too adventurous. The French lyrics may sour the album for some but the catchy tunes and lyrics (even though they may mean little to your average Anglophile) highlight the universal language of pop. Following the global smash "Moi�Lolita", are two similarly sounding tunes "Lui ou Toi" and "L'Alizé" which once again showcase Alizée's mature and breathy vocals. Other tracks are also equally sweet and familiar, with the opening to "Mon Maquis" sounding remarkably like T'Pau's "Heart and Soul". The highlight of the album has to be the addictive but slightly corny "JBG"--James Bond Girl. Alleged focused around Alizée's own life experiences, all of the tracks have been written and produced by top French duo Myl�ne Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat.
