This is just as much an achievement for his remarkable band, with solid support from pianist Joey Calderazzo and bassist Eric Revis and, above all, the consistently fresh and sometimes explosive drumming of Jeff "Tain" Watts. They conveniently forget the brawling, crude but hugely vibrant and influential Lionel Hampton outfit, which even today thunders on, close on 60 years later. This collection starts in 1937, five years prior to Hampton's big band, with selections from a breathlessly brilliant series of all-star small-group sessions he led for RCA Victor which should be in anyone's collection. Hampton began recording with his big band in 1942 and soon hit with "Flying Home", featuring Illinois Jacquet on a tenor sax solo which helped shape popular jazz and blues for the next decade. It also set the pattern for Hampton's own group, encouraging this natural showman to pull out all of the stops all of the time. The compilation selects sides up to December 1949, including the equally rampant 1944 "Flying Home No.2", featuring Arnett Cobb out-Jacqueting Jacquet. There are quieter moments in this set, but the whole point of Hampton is raunch and strut. Tiesto Elements of LifeSe flere produkter fra AmazonTiesto sticks to his guns on a new album of original compositions that follows 2004's Just Be. Elements of Life strikes a satisfying balance between inventive vocal tracks and signature trance stormers: "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Driving to Heaven," and "Bright Morning Star" all glow with the Dutchman's epic sound, one that is simultaneously haunting and uplifting. On the vocal side, the soaring energy of "Break My Fall," which features BT on vocals, will not disappoint fans of the duo's prior work on "Just Be" and other collaborations. To be sure, there are a number of less convincing pieces as well: "Dance4Life" with Faithless's Maxi Jazz falls flat, and the lyrics of "Can You Feel Me" prove that the genre's reputation for banal wordsmithing is not entirely undeserved. For the most part, however, these weaker moments are outweighed by the stronger tracks. Principal among these is undoubtedly "Sweet Things"--in which Charlotte Martin's vocal high-wire act is complemented by some exceptional programming--a track that is sure to receive a great many spins by DJs around the globe and yet further proof that when it comes to bringing alive the female voice for the dancefloor, Tiesto remains without equal. Her original muse may have been denied for seven years, but was never forgotten; indeed, Molina has managed something of an unexpected musical delight here. Her breathy, gentle vocals haunt unusual song structures and the album's quiet, playful production seems like some restless ghost, wandering a sonic landscape that's as electro as it is Latin. That pan-cultural, less-is-more sense is rare on any collection, let alone on a sophomore album ( Rara was released in her native country in 1996) cobbled together between club gigs while living in Los Angeles. Driven by an insistent, plaintive guitar and producer/collaborator Alejandro Franov's delicate, bubbling synth riffs, Molina's unusually structured songs often seem to float in on a breeze and escape on a daydream. She's claimed the album was recorded in moments near the edge of sleep, and that stream-of-unconscious tack variously involves rhythmic choruses of barking dogs, ticking watches and rainforest soundscapes--most so delicately rendered they sometimes seem an auditory illusion--seasoned with impossibly plastic washes of synth and carried by Molina's sweetly somnambulistic vocals. But since her return in 1990 her good works have redoubled; they include South African charities for Aids awareness and women's causes. Her art was always sweet and simple, no matter how urgent and combative her message: this CD has great charm. Most of the tracks are accompanied by a mélange of guitars and African instruments, over which her voice rides clear and clean, with just the occasional hint of vibrato. The resulting three records all had moments of magic: the lilting "Time" (from 1996s fully realised Miracle), 1991s Husker Du cover "Up In The Air" which ranks alongside even This Mortal Coil's finest moments, and "Mercury" (from 1990s Heidi Berry), for three. It's difficult to listen to either Beth Orton or The Corrs without hearing echoes of Heidi's voice. And yet the American-born singer is still largely unknown. Memories of these sad dog-days on the road and the avalanche of indiscriminate releases which followed his death in 1977 have, at times, threatened to obscure Elvis' position as the founding father of rock & roll. But--thanks to Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon and Colin Escott who systematically overhauled his enormous library of recordings and sequenced them into definitive box-sets covering the 1950s, 60s and 70s--by 1992 Elvis' reputation as King was restored. The four CD box-set Platinum was released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Elvis' death. While much of the material here is made up of familiar hits such as "Love Me Tender", "Hound Dog", "Can't Help Falling In Love" and "Moody Blue", there are also 77 unreleased performances spread over the set. Of course, "unreleased" doesn't necessarily mean "better". The original versions of "Heartbreak Hotel", "Rip It Up" and "That's All Right" are so firmly embedded as the foundations of rock & roll that the new versions here can add little lustre. But what makes Platinum a real treasure-trove is hearing Elvis off-mic--whether off-duty or working up songs in the studio prior to recording. While never analytical in his approach, Elvis had an instinctive grasp of all manner of music--and as you can hear on these tracks, he could slip with ease from rock & roll to gospel, ballads or the blues. Among the most revealing recordings are Elvis relaxing at home, tackling such diverse material as "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen", "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Blueberry Hill". Other intriguing moments come from eavesdropping as Elvis warms up before a session--perhaps mindful of the fact that rock & roll was "the devil's music", Elvis always chose gospel music to limber up with prior to recording. Alanis Morissette UnpluggedSe flere produkter fra AmazonCutting the electricity only really began to sound like a good idea when Kurt Cobain picked up his acoustic on Nirvana's Unplugged In New York sessions, and on the whole it tends to bring out the worst in an artist and their audience--muso tendencies, obscure cover versions, and a reverential hush punctuated only by obsequious applause. Alanis Morissette's Unplugged, accordingly, is a mixed bag--there's plenty of dispensable moments, like the warbly dirge of "Joining You", or a singularly pointless "Head Over Feet", almost a carbon copy of the original. The gems, though, include a stripped-down, Tori Amos-esque take on "You Oughta Know", which reverberates with repressed bitterness over the minimal tones of piano and keening violin. Boyz II Men Legacy: The Greatest Hits CollectionSe flere produkter fra AmazonLegacy is just about the right title for this album. Boyz II Men were the original, modern-day boy band who formed the mould for groups such as Take That and the Backstreet Boys to be cast from. Heavily influenced by Doo Wop groups such as the Platters and the Dells and developed by ex-New Edition and BellBivDevoe member Michael Bivins, Boyz II Men quickly rose to heavyweight status after the foursome's 1991 debut Cooleyhighharmony. Their success is based on romantic ballads and strong vocals, the type of which groups such as Another Level could only dream of. However they've lacked the charisma and looks to really impact upon the world, being perhaps the only group that could be described as "quietly" selling an incredible 35 million records. This collection of their best moments concentrates on their strengths as crooning Cupids, best exemplified by their massive hit and classic ballad "End of the Road" (taken from the Boomerang soundtrack). "Hey Lover" featuring LL Cool J is as energetic as the album gets and Legacy is unashamedly assembled for lovers of slow, romantic bedroom soul. But a lot of Boyz II Men's work hasn't aged too well. "I'll Make Love To You", a one time smash, sounds tinny and tacky and "On Bended Knee" is gut wrenchingly saccharine in a way today's R&B artists just wouldn't even try on. This Greatest Hits album effectively closes a chapter of Boyz II Men's history. Having just signed a new record deal with an album for release next year it will be interesting to see if the quartet move on or stick to their tried and trusted sugar-on-sugar methodology. -- Jake Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |

Fanshawe: African SanctusSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe 1970s was the decade of "fusion". But when David Fanshawe presented his eclectic mix of tape recordings from travels in Africa and his own compositions, he still caused quite a stir. No one had heard anything like it. Fanshawe's truly original ideas inspired a generation of musicians within all genres. Having conceived the idea for African Sanctus whilst on an inspired camel ride through Egypt, Fanshawe created a new genre: he would not force European rules onto the African material. Fanshawe found a way of dressing the two in each other, creating a sense of real equality, a symbiotic relationship reflecting his political and humanist message. Favourite moments are the "Moslem Call To Prayer" backed by a modern chorale, and a "love duet" between the ever-so-well-tempered grand piano and a Sudanian cattle boy's harp. The "Offertorium", though, is a dreadful 1960s pop ballad; a real clanger. The more abstract Salaams makes high demands on the Western singer's flexibility. A web of human voices (including Fanshawe on megaphone), cluster techniques and "free" harmony, create a melting pot of 20th-century composition techniques paired with the ageless sense of humanity in Fanshawe's source music. Yardbirds BirdlandSe flere produkter fra AmazonBirdland quite possibly qualifies for entry into the Guinness Book of Records under the "longest ever gap between studio albums" category. After all, when blues/pop legends the Yardbirds last released a proper record ( Little Games, a variable quality affair featuring some up-and-coming guitar chancer called Jimmy Page), man had yet to visit the moon, Tony Blair was a 14-year-old schoolboy and the White Stripes (huge Yardbirds devotees if their recent live bash with Jeff Beck was anything to go by) were what you saw on the road at zebra crossings. Of course, nothing the Yardbirds could possibly do now will ever attain the dizzy, head-swimming heights of their psychedelic 1960s heyday, but Birdland--with some dignity--is certainly not the sound of washed-up, pensionable ex-rock stars sucking their stomachs in and combing their hair forwards. Reconvening around a nucleus of original members Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty, the latterday line-up also boasts the pedigree of former Dr Feelgood guitarist and co-writer John "Gypie" Mayo as well as guest appearances aplenty from such ostentatious fretboard manipulators as Brian May, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Slash and even Jeff Beck himself. And while dismissing the production work on their classic 1960s hits as "crap" may well be a poor excuse for offering these newly buffed-up re-recordings of their greatest moments ("Shapes of Things", "For Your Love", etc), at least accusations of laurel-resting are convincingly countered by the inclusion of some stimulating new material. For example, "The Mystery of Being"--worryingly described by the band as "Afghan psychedelia"--is just the sort of Arabian rock illusion previously conjured up by Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, the tribute to Keith Relf on "An Original Man" is worthy of the Byrds at their notoriously brotherly prime and "Crying Out for Love" is mature blues with heart, soul and sensitivity. GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (GameCube)Se flere produkter fra AmazonUsing the name GoldenEye for this latest 007 game could be one of the most ill-advised choices in marketing history, since it beggars all sorts of unkind comparisons to Rare's seminal N64 title, which to this day remains one of the best games ever made. The choice of name is all the more puzzling because the game has nothing to do with the film or, save the first person perspective, Rare's magnum opus. In fact the rather unlikely reasoning behind everything is that you are an evil ex-MI6 agent who after a fight with Dr No is given an, err? golden eye by Auric Goldfinger. The game's premise is such that all of Bond's greatest bad guys are still alive and caught up in a sort of underworld civil war, in which your character seeks to be the real beneficiary. Ignoring such nonsense though, and looking purely at the game, the AI seems quite good and the replacement of Everything or Nothing's "Bond Moments" with scripted "Death Trap" sequences is fairly amusing. Unfortunately though the developers seem to have forgotten that the original game was as much lauded (at least a year before Thief or Metal Gear Solid) for its stealth gameplay as much for its shooting and this element seems total absent from Rogue Agent. The multiplayer is also unconvincing with no radar and rather sprawling level design. It might turn out all right when it's finished but at the end of the day this is no GoldenEye. -- David Jenkins Fragt: Ukendt! |

Westlife Coast to CoastSe flere produkter fra AmazonAt the time of Coast To Coast's release, Westlife could do no wrong. With a staggering record of every one of their seven singles hitting the top spot of the British charts, they were really at the peak of their game. Within a week of this, their second album's release, their cultural forefathers Boyzone announced it was game over, leaving their most successful member Ronan Keating balancing his solo career and his job as Westlife's manager, aided and abetted by Louis Walsh, the man who made Boyzone and who was now firmly focused on his five new Irish wonder boys,. Together they have come up with a winning formula--good looks, ballads and gentle pop--and they rigidly stick to it. After all if it ain't broke don't fix it--look what happened to the Spice Girls, swept aside thanks to a combination of a radical change of direction combined with Westlife power. As such, the album itself is hardly a challenging affair, in fact the only things that really jump out and grab you are the aberration that was their duet with Mariah Carey on "Against All Odds" and their butchering of Abba's "I Have A Dream"--taking the lush harmonies of the original and turning them into the aural equivalent of wallpaper paste. However, it isn't all totally bland, there are moments where the harmonies shine through and the pop sensibilities come to the fore, such as "My Love", "When You're Looking Like That" and "Dreams Come True", in fact anything that is remotely up-tempo and a break from the relentless wishy washy nondescript ballads. This is the sound of Westlife at the peak of their career--the only trouble is, with their phenomenal track record and the wonderful fickleness of the British pop charts, the only way from here is down. -- Helen Marquis Fragt: Ukendt! |

Pentangle At the Little TheatreSe flere produkter fra AmazonGiven that the jazz-meets-folk blueprint that the original Pentangle created in the 1960s has rarely been improved upon, it is perhaps only fair that vocalist McShee resurrected the name a few years ago to pick up where she left off. Despite the fact that the band was home to guitar legends John Renbourne and Bert Jansch, the 21st-century version is lacking in the six-string department, preferring instead a musical collage of percussion, keyboards and saxophones. The jazz influences are still there--McShee is more of that ilk than a traditional singer, although it's from the folk world that she draws most of her material--now wedded with a global, almost ambient groove. Recorded live, At The Little Theatre showcases the band in freewheeling form, developing on a selection from their fine Passe Avant album and revisiting a few choice moments from the archives.
