Diana Krall Live In ParisSe flere produkter fra AmazonRecorded at the historic Olympia Theatre in Paris in November 2001, Live in Paris is Diana Krall's first live album. Krall is backed by a quicksilver combo of bassist John Clayton, drummer Jeff Hamilton and guitarist John Pisano and her jazz heritage comes through loud and clear on this programme of standards, ballads and bossa novas. On Peggy Lee's "I Love Being Here with You", Bob Dorough's "Devil May Care" and Frank Sinatra's "Fly Me to the Moon", Krall's snappy, post-bop piano playing shows off her debt to Nat "King" Cole and Jimmy Rowles. Her cool contralto vocals are illuminated by the Orchestre Symphonique Europeen, under the direction of Alan Broadbent on "Let's Fall in Love" and on "I've Got You Under My Skin", with guest conductor Claus Ogerman. Krall's deep take on Joni Mitchell's "A Case of You" is a great choice for an encore, and the CD concludes with Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are", a studio track from a film called The Guru, with tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker and bassist Christian McBride. This collection only hints at what Diana Krall has to offer in the future. -- Eugene Holley, Jr Fragt: Ukendt! |

Elgar - Cello Concerto; Sea PicturesSe flere produkter fra AmazonFirst issued in 1965, few recordings have lasted so well and, in the case of Sea Pictures, carried on getting better. Du Pré's account of the concerto, made when she was barely 20, made her a star overnight and remains the work with which she's most often identified. Her forceful, highly emotional performance won't be to all tastes or occasions but it brings the work to life like few others. Not just the poignancy of the opening or the aching nostalgia of the "Adagio" but the quicksilver brilliance of the "Scherzo" and cumulative energy of the finale are really made to tell. Barbirolli gives marvellously understanding support here and in Sea Pictures. It also established its soloist--Janet Baker and remains the deepest and most perceptive recording this song-cycle is ever likely to have! Baker makes light of the sometimes gauche poetry and awkward word-setting, giving the music a sweep and nobility typical of Elgar at his best. -- Richard Whitehouse Fragt: Ukendt! |

It's A Beautiful Day It's a Beautiful DaySe flere produkter fra AmazonYes, the original version of that FM oldie "White Bird" is included on this CD. Formed in 1967 by former symphony violinist David LaFlamme, this popular group plowed through all of the San Francisco Sound's clichés at once: organ, fiddle and drum solos; epigrammatic sayings about love, time, and dreams that are so cheesy they would make a Hallmark hack blush; the soft-part-that-heads-steadily-toward-the-crescendo part; incongruously pieced-together prog-rock songs that plod on for way too long; off-kilter male and female singing; and a near-total lack of soul. This 1969 recording, then, is a clear blueprint of what not to do in psychedelic rock--with the exception of "White Bird," which retains a sheen of innocence and melodic oomph despite its daft, repeated utterance that "she must fly!" This reissue has a bright, clear sound and excellent separation; it will more than please fans of the original LP. However, those looking for an equal to the best works of Moby Grape, of Quicksilver, and the of Dead are encouraged to seek elsewhere. --Mike McGonigal Fragt: Ukendt! |

Jesse Sykes Like, Love, Lust & the Open Halls of the Soul [VINYL]Se flere produkter fra AmazonJesse Sykes is hard to pin down--and that's a good thing indeed. She overlaps with current trends, but is completely her own artist. There are elements of alt-country, psych-folk, and singer-songwriter-troubadour, but also others that add alluring breadth to her sound, most notably in the band's penchant for drawing upon the best aspects of Haight-Ashbury ballroom sonics. "How Will We Know" swirls and builds with guitar tones that evoke John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Barry Melton (Country Joe & the Fish). Sykes has taken those sounds (which were often the best part of the era's rather feeble cowboy machismo) and added finesse, poetics, and a woman's vantage point. Her lyrics are rife with cold winds and loneliness, but never without hope, even if that element is handled by the warm glow of the music. The band is a sympathetically balanced entity with supple power and grace. They move between loud and soft without the now cliched extreme dramatics originally pioneered by the Pixies--another example of Sykes eschewing trends and forging her own path. --David Greenberger Fragt: Ukendt! |

Brahms - Complete SymphoniesSe flere produkter fra AmazonTestament's catalogue is full of gems, few as important as this set of Toscanini's legendary 1952 Philharmonia Brahms concerts. Available in various wretched sounding pirate editions, this is their first "official" release, made from EMI's original concert tapes, but unpublished because of contractual conflicts. Toscanini's Brahms is familiar from his contemporaneous RCA recordings with his NBC Symphony; but these are quite different from the driven and unyielding RCAs, made more unrelenting by dry, airless engineering. With the Philharmonia, we get a warmer, more lyrical Brahms, though no less intense. The 85-year-old conductor is rhythmically less rigid and his phrasing more flexible. Even the Third Symphony, never a comfortable fit for Toscanini, comes off well, while the more lyrical Second is as poetic as it is intense. But there isn't a weak performance on this set, and the quicksilver Variations rival Toscanini's classic 1936 recording with the New York Philharmonic. Throughout, his often episodic approach in the late RCA Brahms recordings is replaced by an ebb and flow that brings the music to life. The Philharmonia is magnificent under Toscanini's baton, playing with warmth and imbuing brief solo turns with imagination. Trombone fluffs in the First's finale and firecrackers exploding on the roof in the Fourth don't dim enjoyment. Dennis Brain's golden tone and distinctive sound make his horn solos a joy to hear. The engineering is better than we might expect from 1952 concert recordings--solid, well detailed monophonic sound. This set is a must-have, and not just for Toscanini idolaters. -- Dan Davis Fragt: Ukendt! |

Joshua Redman Passage of TimeSe flere produkter fra AmazonRedman sees Passage Of Time as a narrative continuum, or suite. There's a sense that the Californian tenorman is reflecting on his productive decade-long stretch with Warners, attempting to make a weighty statement on the story so far. Redman wrote and produced all of the music, assisted by his regular team of Aaron Goldberg (piano), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Gregory Hutchinson (drums). The whole sequence opens with "Before", Redman's lone tenor flutter almost sounding like a John Surman solo, all breathily deep vibrations and scampering progressions. Each number seamlessly merges into the next, with "Phase II" picking up a funky limp, switching from one time-frame to another, then "Our Minuet" enjoying a mid-point blues-dappled tenor solo and ending with a solo bass rumination. It's all about the steady stream, not surprise interjections or upturned textures, and this approach can have its drawbacks by the time we reach tracks 5 and 6. Luckily, the next cut, "Enemies Within", arrives in engagingly tentative spurts, leaving halting spaces before embarking on a typically quicksilver Redman work-out. Martin Longley Fragt: Ukendt! |

Liszt - Paganini StudiesSe flere produkter fra AmazonIt was the 21-year-old Liszt's encounter with Paganini in concert that first set him on the path of becoming an instrumental virtuoso himself, and what better material to show off his skills than his transcriptions for piano of some of the works with which the violinist stunned his public. Schumann, who had already done some Paganini transcriptions of his own, wrote admiringly that the Liszt works were "probably the most difficult ever written for the pianoforte". No problems there for Marc-André Hamelin, whose quicksilver technique is well up to the task. But the artistry in this music is not just in being able to play it but in throwing it off with a light hand, and here Hamelin is really in his element, beguiling the ear with wittily delicious playing worthy of Paganini himself. Try "La campanella" and be prepared to be delighted. There is weightier material in the three Schubert marches, which Liszt loved so much that aside from these transcriptions he also arranged them for orchestra and for piano duet. Again it is the great subtlety of Hamelin's understated playing which lifts the music, and as ever with Hyperion discs the piano rings out with marvellous clarity. -- Keith Clarke Fragt: Ukendt! |

Eminem The Eminem Show [EXPLICIT LYRICS]Se flere produkter fra AmazonAny lingering doubts as to the depth of Eminem's skills, or his potential for raw-yet-compelling honesty, are dispelled on The Eminem Show's first track. Armed with a quicksilver flow and a thundering rhythm track (the record was exec-produced by long-time mentor/partner Dr Dre, "White America" finds Eminem ferociously mauling the hand that feeds him, lambasting his critics, the industry and the racism that, in many ways, helped make Marshall Mathers more than just another rapper. "Let's do the math," Em sneers, "If I was black I would have sold halfÂ?.I could be one of your kids/ little Eric looks just like this." After the bombast of The Marshall Mathers LP and Eminem's well-noted use of sexual epithets, this kind of material is made more controversial because it actually rings true. From a brutal retort to his long-estranged and equally troubled mother ("Cleaning Out My Closets") to a surprisingly tender ode to his child ("Hailie's Song"), Eminem examines his life, loves, arrests, addictions, failures and successes with surprising insight, making this a funk-drenched hip-hop confessional well worth the hype. -- Amy Linden Fragt: Ukendt! |

Gipsy Kings Somos GitanosSe flere produkter fra AmazonThe Gipsy Kings' journey from a caravan park on the French/Spanish border to million-selling, celebrity-fêted global success is one of the most heart-warming stories in modern music. The Reyes brothers and their Baliardo cousins have forged their signature sound in a career that now spans nearly 30 years and the fruits of their labours spring forth on Somos Gitanos. The Kings' vocal and instrumental magic are founded on a pride in their native flamenco/fandango tradition but songs like "Jo Busco Una Camino" and the bold, torrential "Magia Del Ritmo" also embrace Latin and Arabic influences. This cultural mix may cause purists to frown but that's their loss. The sensual shivers flowing from Nicolas Reyes vocal on "Quiero Libertad", the beautiful atmospherics of "Felices Dias" and the quicksilver lyrical flourish from Tony Baliardo's guitar on "Flamencos En El Aire" are treasures that easily cross borders and defy categories. --Gavin Martin Fragt: Ukendt! |

Herbie Hancock Takin' OffSe flere produkter fra AmazonIn some respects Herbie Hancock's first recording as a leader typifies the hard-bop/funk of many late-1950s/early-1960s Blue Note productions (notably Horace Silver's tight-knit group). At the same time, Hancock's lyrical bent and pliable comping point toward the greater abstraction and open-ended, chamber dimensions to come. Blue Note's splendid remastering brings the underrated bassist Butch Warren's bedrock sonority into focus, while Dexter Gordon's laconic virility meshes surprisingly well with the pianist's quicksilver palette. And for those who want to hear the original, unadulterated version of Hancock's earliest signature composition "Watermelon Man", look no further. The disc is rounded out by additional, previously unissued alternate takes. --Jed Distler Fragt: Ukendt! |

Haven Between The SensesSe flere produkter fra AmazonBetween the Senses, the debut album by tender Cornish rock balladeers Haven, shuffles into the spotlight with no mean amount of expectation resting upon its slender shoulders. Not only was this band relocated to Manchester under the guiding hand of Joe Moss, ex-manager of The Smiths, but Between the Senses was produced by that band's stellar guitarist, Johnny Marr. This pedigree suggests that there's something truly great brewing in the imaginations of these four young men. Far from The Smiths' sprightly witticisms, however, Haven display a grounding in more traditional rock touchstones like Buffalo Springfield and Quicksilver Messenger Service. These are songs of sweeping anthem and ornate ambition, songs that pad along the well-trodden path of earnest indie-rock, snapping hungrily at Coldplay's heels. While "Beautiful Thing" and "Say Something" swoon up there with the best of them, Between the Senses does feel a little threadbare towards the end, let down by a reliance on mid-pace rock songs and a limited palette of moods. Ultimately, this is a sturdy, competent debut. But for Haven to really live up to their much-vaunted potential, they're going to have to come up with something that resonates with a power that right now sounds maddeningly just beyond their grasp.-- Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |
