Branford Marsalis Footsteps Of Our FathersSe flere produkter fra AmazonBranford, the oldest and most adventurous of the Marsalis brothers, launches his new label with his most ambitious recording to date. On Footsteps of Our Fathers he isn't just invoking the giants of modern-jazz tenor saxophone, he's playing their most demanding extended compositions--Sonny Rollins's "Freedom Suite" and John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme". Marsalis rises to the challenge. "Freedom Suite" is all rhythmic nuance and kinetic blues, sly wit and subtle swing, played with just bass and drums, as was the original. Marsalis previously recorded "A Love Supreme" in 1994 on Stolen Moments: Red Hot + Cool, but the results are far superior here, as he's grown into the emotional dimension of Coltrane's suite. The extended solo on "Resolution" and the even more intense exploration of "Pursuance" mark high points among Marsalis's recordings. This is just as much an achievement for his remarkable band, with solid support from pianist Joey Calderazzo and bassist Eric Revis and, above all, the consistently fresh and sometimes explosive drumming of Jeff "Tain" Watts. Ornette Coleman's "Giggin'" and John Lewis's "Concorde" book-end the major works. --Stuart Broomer Fragt: Ukendt! |

Elvis Presley Platinum - a Life in MusicSe flere produkter fra AmazonBy the end of his life, Elvis in concert was a bloated caricature of his former self, churning out lacklustre medleys of hits. Memories of these sad dog-days on the road and the avalanche of indiscriminate releases which followed his death in 1977 have, at times, threatened to obscure Elvis' position as the founding father of rock & roll. But--thanks to Ernst Mikael Jorgensen, Roger Semon and Colin Escott who systematically overhauled his enormous library of recordings and sequenced them into definitive box-sets covering the 1950s, 60s and 70s--by 1992 Elvis' reputation as King was restored. The four CD box-set Platinum was released to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Elvis' death. While much of the material here is made up of familiar hits such as "Love Me Tender", "Hound Dog", "Can't Help Falling In Love" and "Moody Blue", there are also 77 unreleased performances spread over the set. Of course, "unreleased" doesn't necessarily mean "better". The original versions of "Heartbreak Hotel", "Rip It Up" and "That's All Right" are so firmly embedded as the foundations of rock & roll that the new versions here can add little lustre. But what makes Platinum a real treasure-trove is hearing Elvis off-mic--whether off-duty or working up songs in the studio prior to recording. While never analytical in his approach, Elvis had an instinctive grasp of all manner of music--and as you can hear on these tracks, he could slip with ease from rock & roll to gospel, ballads or the blues. Among the most revealing recordings are Elvis relaxing at home, tackling such diverse material as "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen", "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Blueberry Hill". Other intriguing moments come from eavesdropping as Elvis warms up before a session--perhaps mindful of the fact that rock & roll was "the devil's music", Elvis always chose gospel music to limber up with prior to recording. The version here of "Oh How I Love Jesus" is called "perhaps the best sense we'll ever get of Elvis sitting around at home singing for himse Fragt: Ukendt! |

Boyz II Men Legacy: The Greatest Hits CollectionSe flere produkter fra AmazonLegacy is just about the right title for this album. Boyz II Men were the original, modern-day boy band who formed the mould for groups such as Take That and the Backstreet Boys to be cast from. Heavily influenced by Doo Wop groups such as the Platters and the Dells and developed by ex-New Edition and BellBivDevoe member Michael Bivins, Boyz II Men quickly rose to heavyweight status after the foursome's 1991 debut Cooleyhighharmony. Their success is based on romantic ballads and strong vocals, the type of which groups such as Another Level could only dream of. However they've lacked the charisma and looks to really impact upon the world, being perhaps the only group that could be described as "quietly" selling an incredible 35 million records. This collection of their best moments concentrates on their strengths as crooning Cupids, best exemplified by their massive hit and classic ballad "End of the Road" (taken from the Boomerang soundtrack). "Hey Lover" featuring LL Cool J is as energetic as the album gets and Legacy is unashamedly assembled for lovers of slow, romantic bedroom soul. But a lot of Boyz II Men's work hasn't aged too well. "I'll Make Love To You", a one time smash, sounds tinny and tacky and "On Bended Knee" is gut wrenchingly saccharine in a way today's R&B artists just wouldn't even try on. This Greatest Hits album effectively closes a chapter of Boyz II Men's history. Having just signed a new record deal with an album for release next year it will be interesting to see if the quartet move on or stick to their tried and trusted sugar-on-sugar methodology. -- Jake Barnes Fragt: Ukendt! |

Stiff Little Fingers AnthologySe flere produkter fra AmazonDespite only reaching the UK Top 40 on two measly occasions, obdurate Belfast punks Stiff Little Fingers retain a sizeable following two decades after they first appeared on the John Peel Show and continue to prove a viable live proposition. This is due in no small part to the reputation of those classic early singles "Suspect Device" and "Alternative Ulster", each an incendiary blast of political anger and teenage disaffection meriting a place in any serious punk collection. Naturally, those tracks, together with the angst-tainted autobiography of "Wasted Life" and "Gotta Getaway" form the highlights of this three-CD anthology, which rounds up all the band's singles and B-sides. The tracks include include 1991's banned 45 "Beirut Moon", a flimsy Iron Maiden soundalike which dealt with the kidnapping of journalist John McCarthy in the Lebanon. Like compatriots the Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers floundered once they moved away from their original formula, experimental forays into pop and reggae in the 1980s proving largely uninspiring., At least the third disc, a passionate singalong live set featuring the band's most cherishable moments of energetic spleen (previously available as the album See You Up There) goes some way to explaining their enduring appeal. --Kevin Maidment Fragt: Ukendt! |

Duke Ellington Such Sweet ThunderSe flere produkter fra AmazonSuch Sweet Thunder was, like Black, Brown and Beige and the later Far East Suite and other works of the late-1950s and on, a long-form study broken into identifiable miniatures that could stand alone as tunes. But this one was far more unlikely than Ellington and co-composer Billy Strayhorn's other suites, with its focus on characters developed by William Shakespeare. Pieces were scripted for both centuries-old characters and Ellington band members; for example, Paul Gonsalves's tenor sax and Johnny Hodges's alto parry as a musical Romeo and Juliet on "Star-Crossed Lovers". Surely this description of the CD makes it sound stiff, even pretentious, but the music gives the lie to such an assumption. Ellington was a master of sectional polyphony, making sure his band's sections swung individually and then in tandem with the other sections, creating a powerful, sometimes swirling swing. But he had Strayhorn, who was also a master of creating moods and ambient textures. And that's where this session becomes fascinating, in the moments when the group creates something other than rhythmic propulsion, standard harmony or even focused melody. Rounding out the original LP issue--which accounts for only half of this CD's length--are a host of alternate takes, three of them wholly or partially unreleased until this set. -- Andrew Bartlett Fragt: Ukendt! |

Reef ReplenishSe flere produkter fra AmazonEmerging as the phenomenon known as Britpop reached its height, Reef's own brand of blues-rock sat out of kilter with the predilection for Madchester and all things Beatles at the time. Owing more to Led Zeppelin and all things bluesy, the West Country quartet's first album, Replenish, crashed into the musical landscape like a runaway truck. Built around an intense guitar-driven sound and the forty-a-day howl of front man Gary Stringer, the album is as raw as it is anachronistic. The sheer, untamed blare of riff-based tracks like "Naked" and "Choose To Live" is hard to ignore and even in quieter moments, as on the consummate "Mellow" the metal fanfare is in evidence. Although subsequent albums have seen the band evolve into a tighter and more original outfit, it is here that the adrenaline rush of their roots really lies. -- George Lees Fragt: Ukendt! |

Tiesto Elements of LifeSe flere produkter fra AmazonTiesto sticks to his guns on a new album of original compositions that follows 2004's Just Be. Elements of Life strikes a satisfying balance between inventive vocal tracks and signature trance stormers: "Ten Seconds Before Sunrise," "Driving to Heaven," and "Bright Morning Star" all glow with the Dutchman's epic sound, one that is simultaneously haunting and uplifting. On the vocal side, the soaring energy of "Break My Fall," which features BT on vocals, will not disappoint fans of the duo's prior work on "Just Be" and other collaborations. To be sure, there are a number of less convincing pieces as well: "Dance4Life" with Faithless's Maxi Jazz falls flat, and the lyrics of "Can You Feel Me" prove that the genre's reputation for banal wordsmithing is not entirely undeserved. For the most part, however, these weaker moments are outweighed by the stronger tracks. Principal among these is undoubtedly "Sweet Things"--in which Charlotte Martin's vocal high-wire act is complemented by some exceptional programming--a track that is sure to receive a great many spins by DJs around the globe and yet further proof that when it comes to bringing alive the female voice for the dancefloor, Tiesto remains without equal. All in all, it's a safe bet that many of Tiesto's Elements will be making their way into DJ crates and MP3 players alike. --Brent Kallmer Fragt: Ukendt! |

Alanis Morissette UnpluggedSe flere produkter fra AmazonCutting the electricity only really began to sound like a good idea when Kurt Cobain picked up his acoustic on Nirvana's Unplugged In New York sessions, and on the whole it tends to bring out the worst in an artist and their audience--muso tendencies, obscure cover versions, and a reverential hush punctuated only by obsequious applause. Alanis Morissette's Unplugged, accordingly, is a mixed bag--there's plenty of dispensable moments, like the warbly dirge of "Joining You", or a singularly pointless "Head Over Feet", almost a carbon copy of the original. The gems, though, include a stripped-down, Tori Amos-esque take on "You Oughta Know", which reverberates with repressed bitterness over the minimal tones of piano and keening violin. Quite wonderful, but if only the sycophantic industry crowd weren't quite so enthusiastic in their praise. --Louis Pattison Fragt: Ukendt! |

Velvet Underground LoadedSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhile John Cale certainly gave the first couple of Velvet Underground albums a signature sound, his departure enabled Lou Reed to do exactly what he does best: write kick-ass, stripped-down rock songs. On Loaded his talent comes to full fruition. Who can imagine a world without "Sweet Jane" and "Rock & Roll", arguably two of the greatest rock tunes ever penned? The brilliance of those songs is so bright, it's easy to overlook a couple of other Reed masterpieces: the tender, epic discourse of "New Age" (which highlights his assured sense of poetic wordplay: "And when you kissed Robert Mitchum / Gee, but I thought you'd never catch him!", and the extended sweet blues romp of "Oh! Sweet Nuthin'." On Loaded the Velvet Underground--who before had hit the sonic ceiling experimenting with shattered chords, feedback, screeching violas and what Reed once claimed was "the fastest guitar playing ever"--eschew the dark side of noise for clarity. Check out the ringing chime that begins "Who Loves the Sun" and the sterling (no pun intended) guitar riff that drives "Rock & Roll." This is not to say that the old ragged punch of the original Velvets is completely gone. Moe Tucker still beats a mean set of skins; there's no stopping Sterling Morrison's train-wreck rhythm guitar on "Train Round the Bend"; and "Head Held High" achieves near- "Sister Ray" moments of madness. --Tod Nelson Fragt: Ukendt! |

Juana Molina SegundoSe flere produkter fra AmazonPrior to Segundo, Juana Molina set aside the budding musical career she'd pursued since childhood to become one of TV's most acclaimed comedians in her native Argentina. Her original muse may have been denied for seven years, but was never forgotten; indeed, Molina has managed something of an unexpected musical delight here. Her breathy, gentle vocals haunt unusual song structures and the album's quiet, playful production seems like some restless ghost, wandering a sonic landscape that's as electro as it is Latin. That pan-cultural, less-is-more sense is rare on any collection, let alone on a sophomore album ( Rara was released in her native country in 1996) cobbled together between club gigs while living in Los Angeles. Driven by an insistent, plaintive guitar and producer/collaborator Alejandro Franov's delicate, bubbling synth riffs, Molina's unusually structured songs often seem to float in on a breeze and escape on a daydream. She's claimed the album was recorded in moments near the edge of sleep, and that stream-of-unconscious tack variously involves rhythmic choruses of barking dogs, ticking watches and rainforest soundscapes--most so delicately rendered they sometimes seem an auditory illusion--seasoned with impossibly plastic washes of synth and carried by Molina's sweetly somnambulistic vocals. More impressive, Molina's songwriting sense seems as inscrutably subconscious. This is a rare, true musical adventure from first track to last. --Jerry McCulley, Amazon.com Fragt: Ukendt! |

John Williams John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999Se flere produkter fra AmazonFor better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises ( The Reivers' Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde Fragt: Ukendt! |

Cat Power You Are FreeSe flere produkter fra AmazonMany artists strive for eccentricity, but few carry it off as convincingly as Chan "Cat Power" Marshall. Over the past few years, her gigs have become legendarily flaky, engrossing marathons of shyness, fragments, works in progress and moments of transcendent beauty. Five years on from her last collection of original songs (1998's Moon Pix), Marshall has finally managed to rein in the silvery brilliance of these shows. The 14 pieces on You Are Freestill sound pretty loose and spontaneous, but compared with their rangy, digressive live incarnations they've been pulled into focus, helped by a notable supporting cast featuring Dave Grohl on drums and Eddie Vedder on harmonies. This time, Marshall's impressionistic vision is expressed with a new clarity whilst retaining the understatement and sense of dislocation that's always made it so affecting. Comparisons are sketchy: Marshall has previously been seen as kin to Bonnie 'Prince' Billy and Smog. Here, though, the elegant punch of "Free" and "He War" provide an American underground counterpart to PJ Harvey, while two outstanding piano blues ("I Don't Blame You" and "Names") are wonderfully evocative of Nina Simone. Confirmation, finally, that Marshall is one of the most original and compelling singer-songwriters around. -- John Mulvey Fragt: Ukendt! |

John Coltrane Interstellar SpaceSe flere produkter fra AmazonAt times this album is hard, intense and demands total attention. But if you give it just that you will find Interstellar Space is totally absorbing and beautiful. Recorded just months before his death it shows 'Trane continuing to press the boundaries of music, discovering both moments of quietness and harshness as he does. With only drummer Rashied Ali to accompany him 'Trane creates his own universe, which very few musicians have managed to do quite so completely. With the original four tracks and two extras ("Leo" and "Jupiter Variations") included this is an album of such brilliance that even after a hundred plays the listener still finds new things to discover. It is a masterpiece of moods but one, which will most definitely not be found at garden centres.-- Phil Brett Fragt: Ukendt! |

Steven Halpern Deja BluesSe flere produkter fra AmazonDeja-Blues is Steve Halpern's reinterpretation of one of his own recordings, Hear to Eternity from 1978. Altered slightly (via additional instrumentation, including Halpern recording bass tracks for the first time in two decades), the new version amplifies what Halpern calls the "world fusion" vibe of the original and delivers a satisfying, globally accented soundtrack for meditation and moments of trance dance. Though at times bass parts lapse into predictability, the glowing "In the Hall of Records" can summon thoughts of Patrick O'Hearn, and the soulful, wordless vocalising of guest Melissa Phillippe, a modern-day addition, gives the title track a sensual, Pink Floyd-like aura. Along with Philippe's voice, flutes and percussion are the chief modifications to the original recording, and the ethereal bamboo flute passages (from Scjawkie Roth) that float across the stilled waters of "Blues by the Ganges" can quiet the soul. Halpern, a one-man New Age music factory, can sometimes present his faithful with some thinly developed musical notions. Not this time. While not a classic, this remake offers an attractive option to those who prefer hints of rhythm in their meditation music. -- Terry Wood Fragt: Ukendt! |

Stereolab Fab Four SutureSe flere produkter fra AmazonWhether you regard them as lounge revivalists, post-rock pioneers or space-pop luminaries, once thing is for sure: Stereolab just keep on sounding better and better. Sure they've had their weak moments, but somehow they always move swiftly past their lulls and mine new seams from their apparently limitless stockpile of creativity. Take Fab Four Suture is a collection of already released via six limited edition 7". An album created in this way could easily be dull, but no, the band have lost none of their ability to weave compelling interplanetary tapestries and spaced out soundscapes. Opening with the jaunty hyper-real harmonies of "Kyberneticka Babicka Pt.1", the album dances a giddy, joyous dance from start to finish, propelled by the usual melange of eldritch organs, off-kilter rhythms and trademark deadpan vocals. Endlessly inventive, Fab Four Suture shows the band have lost none of their lust for weird pop, nor any of their original joie de vivre.-- Paul Sullivan Fragt: Ukendt! |

Willis Come Get SomeSe flere produkter fra AmazonAt 32, Hayley Willis is making her debut a lot later than most people in her line of work, but that's not a problem: Come Get Some is an album of songs of experience, and Willis's voice, words and music sound all the better for the lengthy gestation that this startlingly fine album has endured. The music on Come Get Some is far more redolent of the southern United States than the southern estates of London: a sparse, feral swampy blues, occasionally reminiscent of the more tender moments of Sixteen Horsepower ("Paper and Stone" and "Talk to Me" are particular highlights). Overall, comparisons to Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Bobby Gentry and, especially, PJ Harvey would not be unreasonable, but they wouldn't tell the entire story. Willis may well be that rarest of things in a ridiculously oversubscribed field: something genuinely original. --Andrew Mueller Fragt: Ukendt! |

The Who QuadropheniaSe flere produkter fra AmazonAn excellent and frequently astonishing album, Quadrophenia is both more ambitious and less accessible than Tommy, the first and most well known rock opera. At its simplest level, Quadrophenia is a coming-of-age story with an awesome soundtrack. The album features some of the Who's finest material, in songs like the enraged "Real Me", the cynical "Punk Meets the Godfather", the wistful "5:15" and "Sea and Sand", and the powerful "Love, Reign O'er Me". The songwriting (courtesy of Pete Townshend) is top-notch, as is the production (the Who actually managed to use synthesizers in an original manner, something few rock bands can aspire to). The mix of powerful songwriting and skilful composition makes this one of the Who's finest moments. --Genevieve Williams Fragt: Ukendt! |

Elton John Goodbye Yellow Brick RoadSe flere produkter fra AmazonEven those who customarily dismiss Elton John as a somewhat bland and sentimental balladeer would find much to admire in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, the best album he has ever made. The track listing reads like an early Greatest Hits collection; it contains not only the original version of "Candle In The Wind" but such raucous and gleeful songs as "Bennie And The Jets", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock 'n' Roll)". From the impassioned opening medley of "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" to the gentle closer, "Harmony", there are few duff moments among these 17 tracks. "All The Young Girls Love Alice" is a savage but wry tale of lesbian exploitation, and the title song is just short of lovely. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is both a joy for fans and a genuine surprise for the uninitiated. -- David Bennun Fragt: Ukendt! |

Westlife Coast to CoastSe flere produkter fra AmazonAt the time of Coast To Coast's release, Westlife could do no wrong. With a staggering record of every one of their seven singles hitting the top spot of the British charts, they were really at the peak of their game. Within a week of this, their second album's release, their cultural forefathers Boyzone announced it was game over, leaving their most successful member Ronan Keating balancing his solo career and his job as Westlife's manager, aided and abetted by Louis Walsh, the man who made Boyzone and who was now firmly focused on his five new Irish wonder boys,. Together they have come up with a winning formula--good looks, ballads and gentle pop--and they rigidly stick to it. After all if it ain't broke don't fix it--look what happened to the Spice Girls, swept aside thanks to a combination of a radical change of direction combined with Westlife power. As such, the album itself is hardly a challenging affair, in fact the only things that really jump out and grab you are the aberration that was their duet with Mariah Carey on "Against All Odds" and their butchering of Abba's "I Have A Dream"--taking the lush harmonies of the original and turning them into the aural equivalent of wallpaper paste. However, it isn't all totally bland, there are moments where the harmonies shine through and the pop sensibilities come to the fore, such as "My Love", "When You're Looking Like That" and "Dreams Come True", in fact anything that is remotely up-tempo and a break from the relentless wishy washy nondescript ballads. This is the sound of Westlife at the peak of their career--the only trouble is, with their phenomenal track record and the wonderful fickleness of the British pop charts, the only way from here is down. -- Helen Marquis Fragt: Ukendt! |
